Analysis Of A Coordination Framework For Mapping Coarse-Grain Applications To Distributed Systems, Linda Ruth Schaefer Jan 1991

Analysis Of A Coordination Framework For Mapping Coarse-Grain Applications To Distributed Systems, Linda Ruth Schaefer

Dissertations and Theses

A paradigm is presented for the parallelization of coarse-grain engineering and scientific applications. The coordination framework provides structure and an organizational strategy for a parallel solution in a distributed environment. Three categories of primitives which define the coordination framework are presented: structural, transformational. and operational. The prototype of the paradigm presented in this thesis is the first step towards a programming development tool. This tool will allow non-specialist programmers to parallelize existing sequential solutions through the distribution, synchronization and collection of tasks. The distributed control, multidimensional pipeline characteristics of the paradigm provide advantages which include load balancing through the use …

Properties Of Ruthenium Oxide Coatings, Roger M. Hawk, Kamesh V. Gadepally, David N. Patangia Jan 1991

Properties Of Ruthenium Oxide Coatings, Roger M. Hawk, Kamesh V. Gadepally, David N. Patangia

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Ruthenium oxide coatings have been deposited on titanium substrates using a flood coating process. These films were heat treated for varying times and temperatures. The resulting films subsequently were characterized by performing resistivity and SEM analyses. Resistivity of the ruthenium oxide coating was found to be extremely dependent upon the firing temperature. Effect of the process conditions and formulations of the coatings on the morphology with respect to their electrical characteristics is presented. Capacitors were fabricated using plates coated with ruthenium oxide coatings. Capacitance versus heat treatment temperatures are discussed and at one firing temperature (480'C), the capacitance was 50 …

Adaptive Gain Control And Contrast Improvement For Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound B-Mode Imaging System Using Charge-Couples Devices, Alan W. Bryant, Thomas J. Herrick Jan 1991

Adaptive Gain Control And Contrast Improvement For Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound B-Mode Imaging System Using Charge-Couples Devices, Alan W. Bryant, Thomas J. Herrick

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A B-mode ultrasound imaging system operates by transmitting a high-frequency sound pulse and measuring the strength and time of flight of the reflected signal. The ultrasound signal may be attenuated as much as 60 dB in its round trip to a target and must be normalized so that contrast is not lost in the far field. Manual controls for adjusting receiver gain versus depth are common in many clinical uses but are impractical in most surgical applications. The goal of this project was to design a circuit to automatically adjust the gain. A two-dimensional low-pass filter is used to approximate …

Electric Field Induced Emission As A Diagnostic Tool For Measurement Of Local Electric Field Strengths, A. N. Dharamsi, K. H. Schoenbach Jan 1991

Electric Field Induced Emission As A Diagnostic Tool For Measurement Of Local Electric Field Strengths, A. N. Dharamsi, K. H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

The phenomenon of electric field induced (EFI) emission is examined in several diatomic and polyatomic molecules. The possibility of using this phenomenon as a diagnostic tool to measure, nonintrusively, the strength and direction of local electric fields in plasmas is discussed. An estimate of the EFI signal emitted in a typical application plasma is given. This yields a lower bound on the detector sensitivity necessary to exploit EFI emission in practical applications. It is concluded that, at present, the EFI signal could be measured by some very sensitive infrared detection schemes available. Current progress in infrared detector technology, if maintained, …

Self-Pulsation Operating Regime For The Absorber Of A Twin Section Laser Diode, Gerald Farrell, P. Phelan, Joe Hegarty Jan 1991

Self-Pulsation Operating Regime For The Absorber Of A Twin Section Laser Diode, Gerald Farrell, P. Phelan, Joe Hegarty

Articles

The voltage-current characteristic of the absorber of a twin section laser diode is investigated as a function of the gain section current. For self pulsation to occur the absorber must be operated within a specific region of the voltage-current characteristics. This region only exists for absorber voltage current characteristics which contain an S-shaped negative resistance.

Design Of Robust Controllers For Gas Turbine Engines, D. E. Moellenhoff, Vittal S. Rao, C. A. Skarvan Jan 1991

Design Of Robust Controllers For Gas Turbine Engines, D. E. Moellenhoff, Vittal S. Rao, C. A. Skarvan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper describes robust controller design methodologies for gas turbine engines. A linear state variable model for the engine is derived using partial derivatives. The Linear Quadratic Gaussian with Loop Transfer Recovery (LQG/LTR) and the Parameter Robust Linear Quadratic Gaussian (PRLQG) robust controller design methodologies have been used to design a controller for gas turbine engines. A new method is proposed by combining the features of LQG/LTR and PRLQG methods and yields good robustness properties with respect to both unstructured uncertainties in the frequency domain and structured parameter variations in the time domain. The new procedure is illustrated with the …

A Neural Architecture For Unsupervised Learning With Shift, Scale And Rotation Invariance, Efficient Software Simulation Heuristics, And Optoelectronic Implementation, Donald C. Wunsch, D. S. Newman, T. P. Caudell, R. A. Falk, C. David Capps Jan 1991

A Neural Architecture For Unsupervised Learning With Shift, Scale And Rotation Invariance, Efficient Software Simulation Heuristics, And Optoelectronic Implementation, Donald C. Wunsch, D. S. Newman, T. P. Caudell, R. A. Falk, C. David Capps

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A simple modification of the adaptive resonance theory (ART) neural network allows shift, scale and rotation invariant learning. The authors point out that this can be accomplished as a neural architecture by modifying the standard ART with hardwired interconnects that perform a Fourier-Mellin transform, and show how to modify the heuristics for efficient simulation of ART architectures to accomplish the additional innovation. Finally, they discuss the implementation of this in optoelectronic hardware, using a modification of the Van der Lugt optical correlator

A Commodity Trading Model Based On A Neural Network-Expert System Hybrid, K. Bergerson, Donald C. Wunsch Jan 1991

A Commodity Trading Model Based On A Neural Network-Expert System Hybrid, K. Bergerson, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Demonstrates a system that combines a neural network approach with an expert system to provide superior performance compared to either approach alone. Learning capability is provided in a software-based approach to commodity trading systems. The authors used the backpropagation network with some parameters selected experimentally. They used a human expert to implicitly define patterns, using hindsight, that an intelligent system might have been able to use for an accurate prediction. Desired outputs were found by a combination of observing the behavior of technical indices that normally precede a certain kind of market behavior, and by observing the actual market behavior …

A Laboratory Investigation Of Electro-Optic Kerr Effect For Detection Of Electric Transmission Line Faults, Badrul H. Chowdhury, E. Grigsby, T. J. Englert Jan 1991

A Laboratory Investigation Of Electro-Optic Kerr Effect For Detection Of Electric Transmission Line Faults, Badrul H. Chowdhury, E. Grigsby, T. J. Englert

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A prototype Kerr cell has been constructed and tested for detecting and identifying faults by monitoring high voltages such as are found in electric power delivery systems. Simulated faults were generated under laboratory conditions and monitored by the Kerr cell. Preliminary analysis was done using analog-to-digital conversion of the detected waveforms with a single board microprocessor serially interfaced with a personal computer. The occurrence of faults is readily observed and results indicate that identification of fault types can be accomplished within less than one cycle of a standard sixty-cycle-per-second delivery system. With a dedicated analysis system such a technique may …

Security Assessment Using Neural Computing, Badrul H. Chowdhury, B. M. Wilamowski Jan 1991

Security Assessment Using Neural Computing, Badrul H. Chowdhury, B. M. Wilamowski

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The advantage of fast computation capability of an artificial neural network (ANN) is used to introduce an iterative scheme for security assessment of power systems. Two related approaches are shown which demonstratedly work satisfactorily. The idea of feedback in a single-layer feedforward neural network is experimented yielding higher accuracy. The ANN is trained by using a set of data obtained from off-line analysis of the power network. After training, an approximate solution for a given condition may be found almost immediately. The approximate solution obtained is judged adequate for assessing the security of the power system. A case study is …

A New Design Approach For Numeric-To-Symbolic Conversion Using Neural Networks, Zibin Tang Jan 1991

A New Design Approach For Numeric-To-Symbolic Conversion Using Neural Networks, Zibin Tang

Dissertations and Theses

A new approach is proposed which uses a combination of a Backprop paradigm neural network along with some perceptron processing elements performing logic operations to construct a numeric-to-symbolic converter. The design approach proposed herein is capable of implementing a decision region defined by a multi-dimensional, non-linear boundary surface. By defining a "two-valued" subspace of the boundary surface, a Backprop paradigm neural network is used to model the boundary surf ace. An input vector is tested by the neural network boundary model (along with perceptron logic gates) to determine whether the incoming vector point is within the decision region or not. …

Freeway Control Via Ramp Metering: Development Of A Basic Building Block For An On-Ramp, Discrete, Stochastic, Mesoscopic, Simulation Model Within A Contextual Systems Approach, Mohamed Yaser Alkadri Jan 1991

Freeway Control Via Ramp Metering: Development Of A Basic Building Block For An On-Ramp, Discrete, Stochastic, Mesoscopic, Simulation Model Within A Contextual Systems Approach, Mohamed Yaser Alkadri

Dissertations and Theses

One of the most effective measures of congestion control on freeways has been ramp metering, where vehicle entry to the freeway is regulated by traffic signals (meters). Meters are run with calibrated influx rates to prevent highway saturation. However, recent observations of some metering sites in San Diego, CA indicate that metering, during peak hour demand, is helping freeway flow while sometimes creating considerable traffic back-ups on local streets, transferring congestion problems from the freeway to intersections. Metering problems stem largely from the difficulty of designing an integrated, dynamic metering scheme that responds not only to changing freeway conditions but …

Parplum : A System For Evaluating Parallel Program Optimization Methods, Jingsong Fu Jan 1991

Parplum : A System For Evaluating Parallel Program Optimization Methods, Jingsong Fu

Dissertations and Theses

The diversity of application programs and parallel architectures makes the mapping problem complicated and hard to evaluate. The quality of mapping is machine and application dependent and varies due to inaccurate values of application and architecture characteristics.

A system for developing, applying and evaluating mappings must have four characteristics: (1) Simplicity: A mapping procedure can be evaluated by separately evaluating its submapping, so the complicated problem can be simplified. (2) Generality: A wide range of application programs and architectures can be easily represented and all mapping algorithms can be easily implemented. (3) Multifunctionality: all the mapping steps, application programs, target …

A Practical Parallel Algorithm For The Minimization Of KröNecker Reed-Muller Expansions, Paul John Gilliam Jan 1991

A Practical Parallel Algorithm For The Minimization Of KröNecker Reed-Muller Expansions, Paul John Gilliam

Dissertations and Theses

A number of recent developments has increased the desirability of using exclusive OR (XOR) gates in the synthesis of switching functions. This has, in turn, led naturally to an increased interest in algorithms for the minimization of Exclusive-Or Sum of Products (ESOP) forms. Although this is an active area of research, it is not nearly as developed as the traditional Sum of Products forms. Computer programs to find minimum ESOPs are not readily available and those that do exist are impractical to use as investigative tools because they are too slow and/or require too much memory. A practical tool would …

Error Control Coding For Meteor Burst Communications, Thomas J. Frederick Jan 1991

Error Control Coding For Meteor Burst Communications, Thomas J. Frederick

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The phenomenon of meteor burst communications is described and its mathematical model is presented. Protocols for meteors burst systems are outlined and examples are given of current use. Recent research in the area of coding performance in meteor burst systems is pointed out. The performance of several error control coding schemes for a meteor burst channel, including two new adaptive algorithms, are evaluated via analysis and simulation. These coding strategies are compared using the probability of successful transmission of a fixed size packet through a single burst as a performance measure. The coding methods are compared via simulation for several …

Surface Acoustic Wave Resonator Parameter Extraction And Oscillator Design, Mark Stephen Cavin Jan 1991

Surface Acoustic Wave Resonator Parameter Extraction And Oscillator Design, Mark Stephen Cavin

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) resonators are frequently used in UHF oscillator designs. SAW resonators are available in the 100 MHz - 1 GHz frequency range which eliminates the need for frequency multiplication necessary with Bulk Acoustic Wave (BAW) devices. As operating frequencies increase, circuit parasitics play a larger role in device performance. One important source of parasitics is the device package and associated interconnects. To model a SAW resonator effectively, these parasitics need to be taken into account Resonator device models and their associated S-parameters can then be used in the design of oscillators. This thesis will discuss the design …

Standardised Control Techniques For Induction Generators In Both Grid-Connected And Isolated Applications, John Brazil, Aidan O'Dwyer, M. Murphy Jan 1991

Standardised Control Techniques For Induction Generators In Both Grid-Connected And Isolated Applications, John Brazil, Aidan O'Dwyer, M. Murphy

Conference papers

Induction generators are particularly suitable for small hydro applications and are widely used at present. However, with conventional grid-connected techniques, it is not always possible to use them in regions with weak grids because of excessive connection transients. Consequently, their many advantages cannot be fully exploited in these regions. Standardised control systems have been developed by ECS for isolated applications of induction generators and these will now be further developed to permit reduced-transient grid connections.

An Optoelectronic Adaptive Resonance Unit, Donald C. Wunsch, T. P. Caudell, R. A. Falk, C. David Capps Jan 1991

An Optoelectronic Adaptive Resonance Unit, Donald C. Wunsch, T. P. Caudell, R. A. Falk, C. David Capps

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The authors demonstrate a hardware implementation of the adaptive resonance theory ART 1 neural network architecture. The optoelectronic ART1 unit, is a novel application of an old device. This device-the 4-f or Van der Lugt correlator-has historically been used as a fast pattern classifier. Usually the correlation operation is employed as a matched filter, so that a maximum correlation peak corresponds to a well-matched pattern. The device described also uses the large peaks, but takes specific advantage of the fact that a zero-shift correlation is mathematically equivalent to a two-dimensional inner product. The authors describe a promising method for emulating …

Summary form only given, as follows. The feasibility of training an adaptive resonance theory (ART-1) network to first cluster aircraft parts into families, and then to recall the most similar family when presented a new part has been demonstrated, ART-1 networks were used to adaptively group similar input vectors. The inputs to the network were generated directly from computer-aided designs of the parts and consist of binary vectors which represent bit maps of the features of the parts. This application, referred to as group technology, is of large practical value to industry, making it possible to avoid duplication of design …

Occupation Dynamics Of Trap States In An A-Si:H Thin-Film Transistor, J. N. Bullock, Cheng-Hsiao Wu Jan 1991

Occupation Dynamics Of Trap States In An A-Si:H Thin-Film Transistor, J. N. Bullock, Cheng-Hsiao Wu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We calculate the dynamical behavior of a-Si:H thin-film transistors with an emphasis on the occupation dynamics of trap states. The appropriate rate equation for the occupation function of trap states is included. We show the relations of filling the trap states with the switch-on time and of emptying the trap charges with the switch-off time. The occupation functions in both cases are non-Fermi distribution. The quasi-equilibrium approximation underestimates those two time constants. Thus, transit time theory cannot describe the speeds of transistors made from disordered materials.

Experimental Determination Of The Effects Of Degenerate Fermi Statistics On Heavily P‐Doped Gaas, E. S. Harmon, Michael R. Melloch, Mark S. Lundstrom, Michael L. Lovejoy Jan 1991

Experimental Determination Of The Effects Of Degenerate Fermi Statistics On Heavily P‐Doped Gaas, E. S. Harmon, Michael R. Melloch, Mark S. Lundstrom, Michael L. Lovejoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The effects of degenerate Fermi statistics on electron injection currents for p+‐GaAs grown by molecular beam epitaxy are presented. To achieve Be dopant concentrations of greater than 8×1019 cm−3, the substrate temperature during growth was reduced to approximately 450 °C from the usual 600 °C. In this heavily doped material, we measure unexpectedly large electron injectioncurrents which are interpreted in terms of an effective narrowing of the band gap. At extremely heavy doping densities, the Fermi level pushes into the valence band and degenerate Fermi statistics must be taken into account. For doping concentrations greater than …

Zero-Field Time-Of-Flight Measurements Of Electron Diffusion In P+-Gaas, Michael L. Lovejoy, B. M. Keyes, M. E. Klausmeier-Brown, Michael R. Melloch, R. K. Ahrenkiel, Mark S. Lundstrom Jan 1991

Zero-Field Time-Of-Flight Measurements Of Electron Diffusion In P+-Gaas, Michael L. Lovejoy, B. M. Keyes, M. E. Klausmeier-Brown, Michael R. Melloch, R. K. Ahrenkiel, Mark S. Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Minority electron diffusivities in p+-GaAs-doped NA =~1.4×1018 and ~1019 cm-3 have been measured in zero-field conditions with an extension of the zero-field time-of-flight technique. Extension of the technique to make it applicable to heavily doped p+-GaAs is described and zero-field data are discussed. Unexpectedly, majority carrier drag effects are not evident in a comparison of this data with recently reported high-field data. Low zero-field mobility of electrons in p+-GaAs has important implications for high-speed devices such as heterojunction bipolar transistors.

Transistor-Based Studies Of Heavy Dop-Ing Effects In N-Gaas, M. P. Patkar, Mark S. Lundstrom, Michael R. Melloch

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The n2ieDp product (where n2ie is the np product and Dp is the minority hole mobility) in heavily doped n‐GaAs has been measured by electrical characterization of p‐n‐p GaAs homojunction transistors with base dopings ranging from approximately 1×1017 to 9×1018 cm−3. The measured n2ieDp product decreases as the doping density increases. These results suggest that nie is roughly constant with doping density, in sharp contrast to the large increase observed for p‐type GaAs. This work shows that when designing GaAs bipolar devices, …

Variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry was used to estimate the thicknesses of all layers within the optical penetration depth of InCaAs-based modulation doped field effect transistor structures. Strained and unstrained InGaAs channels were made by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on InP substrates and by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition on GaAs substrates. In most cases. ellipsometrically determined thicknesses were within 10% of the growth-calibration results. The MBE-made InCaAs strained layers showed large strain effects, indicating a probable shift in the critical points of their dielectric function toward the InP lattice-matched concentration.

Observation Of The Visible Absorption Spectrum Of H2o+, Biswajit Das, John W. Farley

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

The Ã 2 Ã1–X̃ 2 B̃1 system of H2O+ has been observed, using laser absorption spectroscopy in a velocity‐modulated discharge. A total of 78 transitions between 14 794 and 15 475 cm−1 have been observed with an uncertainty (1 SD) of 0.02 cm−1, including 76 transitions in the (0,7,0)–(0,0,0) band and 2 in the (0,8,0)–(0,0,0) band. This species is important for cometary astronomy, and intriguing for molecular physics because of its prominent Renner–Teller interaction. Careful measurements were made of the relative intensities of the absorption lines, …
