Electroluminescence And Photoluminescene Efficiency Of Poly(P-Phenylenevinylene) Deriatives, E. Staring, R. Demandt, David Braun, G. Rikken, Y. Kessener, A. Venhuizen, M. Van Knippenberg, M. Bouwmans

Electrical Engineering

Alkoxy, alkyl, and cyano derivatives of poly(p-phenylenevinylene) [PPV] are used as the emissive layers in light-emitting diodes [LEDs] to obtain luminescence from red to blue. We present the luminescence efficiency for these soluble PPV derivatives. comparing the photoluminescence [PL] yields with the electroluminescence [EL] yields. PL efficiency increases with the fraction of non-conjugated units. EL efficiency depends not only on the radiative recombination efficiency of the emitting material but also on carrier transport to and within the material. Efforts to improve the efficiency and long term stability of these polymer LEDs are challenged by efficient and balanced carrier …

Review: 'Integrated Optics: Design And Modeling,' By Reinhard Marz, Bradley D. Duncan Apr 1995

Review: 'Integrated Optics: Design And Modeling,' By Reinhard Marz, Bradley D. Duncan

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

My overall impression is that Integrated Optics: Design and Modeling will make a fine addition to almost anyone's collection of books on integrated optics. It will, however, serve its readers better as a reference book than as a text from which to first learn the basic concepts of integrated optics. I say this because the book is written at a fairly sophisticated technical level, though the author often moves rather quickly to the "bottom line" without providing material much beyond what is first necessary to introduce a problem or concept, and then a statement of the results and/or implications. It …

Hardware/Software Codesign And Simulation With The Occam Programming Language, Roy L. Krans Apr 1995

Hardware/Software Codesign And Simulation With The Occam Programming Language, Roy L. Krans

Masters Theses

Hardware/software codesign is an increasingly popular method for improving system performance and adaptability while minimizing cost. The goal of this design approach is to achieve the desired system characteristics (performance, fault tolerance, cost, power consumption, etc.) by carefully distributing the system functions among hardware and software components. Popular tools for describing this dual hardware/software functionality are behavioral languages such as C++ and Ada. These languages typically include facilities for both traditional sequential programming as well as behavioral modeling.

This thesis examines the effectiveness of occam as a behavioral language and its role in hardware/software codesign. The occam language is used …

Microwave Detection Optimization Of Disbond In Layered Dielectrics With Varying Thickness, Stoyan I. Ganchev, Nasser N. Qaddoumi, Emarit Ranu, R. Zoughi Apr 1995

Microwave Detection Optimization Of Disbond In Layered Dielectrics With Varying Thickness, Stoyan I. Ganchev, Nasser N. Qaddoumi, Emarit Ranu, R. Zoughi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The detection sensitivity optimization of air disbond in layered dielectric composites, using an open-ended rectangular waveguide, is studied both theoretically and experimentally. The sensitivity of the disbond detection is strongly influenced by the proper choice of parameters such as the operating frequency and the layered composite geometry (conductor backed or terminated by an infinite half-space of air). The capability of optimizing the measurement system parameters to detect and estimate the thickness of a disbonded layer independent of some changes in the thickness of the dielectric coating is also demonstrated. The impact of the parameters influencing detection optimization is theoretically investigated …

An Investigation Of The Speed And Power Limitations Of A Copper-Doped Gallium Arsenide Photoconductive Switch, David Clifton Stoudt Apr 1995

An Investigation Of The Speed And Power Limitations Of A Copper-Doped Gallium Arsenide Photoconductive Switch, David Clifton Stoudt

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The processes of persistent photoconductivity followed by photo-quenching are demonstrated in copper-compensated, silicon-doped, semi-insulating gallium arsenide. These processes allow a switch to be developed that can be closed by the application of one laser pulse (λ = 1.06 μm) and opened by the application of a second laser pulse with a wavelength equal to twice that of the first laser (λ= 2.13 μm). Switch closure is primarily achieved by elevating electrons from a deep copper center which has been diffused into the material. The opening phase is a two-step process which relies initially on the absorption of the 2-μm laser …

A nonlinear Teager energy operator is utilized for detection of the fetal heart tone event. Autocorrelation and a parallel redundancy correction algorithm derives fetal heart rates. A real time monitoring system is described which records and plots the time history of both the fetal heart rate and the acoustic fetal heart signal. The system is validated in the context of the fetal nonstress test. Comparisons are made with ultrasonic nonstress tests on a …

Differential Current Switch Logic: A Low Power Dcvs Logic Family, Dinesh Somasekhar, Kaushik Roy Apr 1995

Differential Current Switch Logic: A Low Power Dcvs Logic Family, Dinesh Somasekhar, Kaushik Roy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We present a new logic family, Differential Current Switch Logic (DCSL) for implementing clocked CMOS circuits. The circuit is in principle a differential cascode voltage switch logic circuit (DCVS). In cornparimsonto other forms of' clocked DCVS, DCSL achieves better performance both in terms of power and speed by restricting internal voltage swings in the N tree. Automatic lock-out of inputs on completion of evaluation is a novel feature of the circuit and allows new implementation of logic functions and the possibility of operating with reduced voltage swings. SPICE simulattions carried out with. the MOSIS 1 . 2 process indicate that …

Optical Constants Of GaXIn1-XP Lattice Matched To Gaas, Mathias Schubert, V. Gottschalch, Craig M. Herzinger, Huade Yao, Paul G. Snyder, John A. Woollam Apr 1995

Optical Constants Of GaXIn1-XP Lattice Matched To Gaas, Mathias Schubert, V. Gottschalch, Craig M. Herzinger, Huade Yao, Paul G. Snyder, John A. Woollam

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

The optical constants of Ga0.51In0.49P have been determined from 0.8 to 5.0 eV using variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements at room temperature. The metal-organic vapor-phase-epitaxy-grown samples were x-ray analyzed to confirm lattice matching to the GaAs substrate. The effects of the native oxide were numerically removed from the data to determine the intrinsic optical constants. This is important because the optical constants reported become generally useful for modeling multiple-layer structures. A Kramers-Kronig analysis was used to reduce interference-related fluctuations in the below-gap refractive index. Near the band edge a mathematical form for excitonic absorption was included. Critical …

Gps Modeling For Designing Aerospace Vehicle Navigation Systems, John J. Dougherty, Hossny El-Sherief, Daniel J. Simon, Gary A. Whitmer Apr 1995

Gps Modeling For Designing Aerospace Vehicle Navigation Systems, John J. Dougherty, Hossny El-Sherief, Daniel J. Simon, Gary A. Whitmer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The complexity of the design of a Global Positioning System (GPS) user segment, as well as the performance demanded of the components, depends on user requirements such as total navigation accuracy. Other factors, for instance the expected satellite/vehicle geometry or the accuracy of an accompanying inertial navigation system can also affect the user segment design. Models of GPS measurements are used to predict user segment performance at various levels. Design curves are developed which illustrate the relationship between user requirements, the user segment design, and component performance.

Novel Kalman Filtering Method For The Suppression Of Gyroscope Noise Effects In Pointing And Tracking Systems, Marcelo C. Aigrain Mar 1995

Novel Kalman Filtering Method For The Suppression Of Gyroscope Noise Effects In Pointing And Tracking Systems, Marcelo C. Aigrain

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

A primary cause of degraded performance in pointing and tracking systems is the jitter in the line of sight. This jitter is caused by the residual angular motion of the stabilized platform within the system. A major contributor to this residual motion is the gyroscope noise. Thus, to reduce angular jitter, lower-noise gyroscopes are selected, generally at a premium cost. Another approach is to enhance the accuracy of the gyroscopes electronically (by suppressing measurement noise) before their outputs are fed into the stabilized platform control system. Optimal filtering techniques can be used for this purpose. The goal is to estimate …

Automatic Synthesis Of Vlsi Layout For Analog Continuous-Time Filters, David Lyle Robinson Mar 1995

Automatic Synthesis Of Vlsi Layout For Analog Continuous-Time Filters, David Lyle Robinson

Dissertations and Theses

Automatic synthesis of digital VLSI layout has been available for many years. It has become a necessary part of the design industry as the window of time from conception to production shrinks with ever increasing competition. However, automatic synthesis of analog VLSI layout remains rare.

With digital circuits, there is often room for signal drift. In a digital circuit, a signal can drift within a range before hitting the threshold which triggers a change in logic state. The effect of parasitic capacitances for the most part, hinders the timing margins of the signal, but not its functionality. The logic functionality …

Pulse Width Modulation Drive Technique For High Resolution Liquid Crystal Gratings, Gregory P. Nordin, S. T. Kowel, J. H. Kulick, R. G. Lindquist, P. J. Nasiatka, A. Thomsen Mar 1995

Pulse Width Modulation Drive Technique For High Resolution Liquid Crystal Gratings, Gregory P. Nordin, S. T. Kowel, J. H. Kulick, R. G. Lindquist, P. J. Nasiatka, A. Thomsen

Faculty Publications

We report the use of a pulse-width modulation drive technique for high-resolution liquid-crystal gratings and show how the grating diffraction efficiency depends on the duty cycle of the drive signal. We identify a regime in which the diffraction efficiency is linearly proportional to the duty cycle, thereby providing a linear drive characteristic.

Direction Of Arrival Estimation And Tracking Of Narrowband And Wideband Signals, A. Satish, Rangasami L. Kashyap Mar 1995

Direction Of Arrival Estimation And Tracking Of Narrowband And Wideband Signals, A. Satish, Rangasami L. Kashyap

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The research addresses estimation and tracking of direction of arrival @OA) and associated parameters of narrowband and wideband signals impinging on a uniform linear array of sensors. The signals are modeled as sample functions of a Gaussian stochastic process. Computationally efficient, approximate maximum likelihood (ML) methods are developed for direction of arrival estimation of narrowband signals impinging on a large array of sensors. A new likelihood function is formulated based on a large M (# sensors) Taylor's series approximation of the original likelihood function. Asymptotic expressions for Cramer-Rao lower bounds on the DOA estimates are derived. From the positive definiteness …

Theses and Dissertations

Target detection is a high priority of the Air Force for the purpose of reconnaissance and bombardment. This research investigates and develops methods to distinguish ground targets from clutter (i.e. foliage, landscape etc.) in Wide Angle Synthetic Aperture Radar (WASAR) images. WASAR uses multiple aspect angle SAR images of the same target scene. The WASAR data was generated from a pre-release software package (XPATCH-ES) provided by the sponsor (WL-AARA). A statistical analysis and feature extraction is performed on the XPATCH-ES data. Polarimetric and wide angle covariance matrices are estimated and analyzed. From an analysis of the wide angle covariance matrix …

Optimal Sequence Estimation For Convolutionally Coded Signals With Binary Digital Modulation In Isi Channels, Fuqin Xiong Mar 1995

Optimal Sequence Estimation For Convolutionally Coded Signals With Binary Digital Modulation In Isi Channels, Fuqin Xiong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Decoding convolutional codes with binary digital modulation in intersymbol interference (ISI) channels is studied. The receiver structure is a whitened matched filter (WMF) whose transfer function is determined by the ISI channel. Decoding of the output sequence can be performed in two steps or one step. The two-step decoding first decodes the ISI corrupted coded sequence back to the ISI free coded sequence which is then decoded back to the uncoded message sequence. For one-step decoding, the entire encoder-channel-receiver system is modeled as a new encoder with combined memory length of the memory lengths of the original …

Generalized Sylvester Theorems For Periodic Applications In Matrix Optics, Lee W. Casperson, Anthony A. Tovar Mar 1995

Generalized Sylvester Theorems For Periodic Applications In Matrix Optics, Lee W. Casperson, Anthony A. Tovar

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Sylvester's theorem is often applied to problems involving light propagation through periodic optical systems represented by unimodular 2 × 2 transfer matrices. We extend this theorem to apply to broader classes of optics-related matrices. These matrices may be 2 × 2 or take on an important augmented 3 × 3 form. The results, which are summarized in tabular form, are useful for the analysis and the synthesis of a variety of optical systems, such as those that contain periodic distributed-feedback lasers, lossy birefringent filters, periodic pulse compressors, and misaligned lenses and mirrors. The results are also applicable to other types …

Journal of Electrochemistry

A photoelectrochemical investigation has been carried out on zirconium initialoxide film and its oxide film grownanodically at constant rate up to different thickness. Both anodicand cathedic photocurrents on the photocurrent spectrum depended on the potential, but had littlerelation with the forming anedic films or measuring solutions. Photocurrent spectrum and photocurrenttransients suggested that the oxide films on zirconium were duplex layers structure. The internal layerwas ZrO2 and the external layer ZrO2·(H2O)n. The photocurrent included photogenerated carrier ininternal and external oxide films, as well as internal photoinjection process for electrons from thesubstrate metal into the …

Electrocatalytic Oxidation Of Formaidehyde And Formic Acid On A Pt/SbAd Electrode, Hong Li, Lincai Jiang, Xiong Jiang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of formaldehyde and formic acid ona Sb-modified platinum (Pt/Sbad) was investigated. Results showed that the Pt/Sbad electrode was electrocatalytically more active than a Pt electrode in the anodic oxidation of formaldehyde and formicacid. In the case of formaldehyde, an oxidation peak appeared at a potential of ca. 0.7V. During the oxidation of formic acid, a 4-fold increase in the 1st peak current was observed. The Sb-modified platinum electrode was found to be most electrocatalytically active at a coverage of 0.75±0.05. The electrocatalytic activity of the Pt/Sbad electrode can be best …

The Study Of The Growth Processes Of The Oxides On Lead Electrodes In Sulfuric Acid Solution, Hesheng Zhai, Xuguang Chen, Jinkua You, Yong Yang, Zugeng Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

The growth processes of PbO and PbO2 on lead electrodes have been investigatedby using in-situ methods that are combined with temporary AC resistance measurment technique and in-situ laser scanning photoelectrochemical microscopy. It is found that a linear relationship existsbetween the electrode resistance(R) and1/2 after the electrode is oxidized at +0.6 V(vs.Hg/H2SO4/35% H2SO4) for more than 5 min. This result suggests that the growth of PbO is well distributed during the early stage of oxidation. The study by using laser scanning photoelectrochemical microscopy has further proved this point. The results also …

Apparatus For Forming Fine Particles, Dennis R. Alexander

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

To alter feedstock material, the material is exposed to laser radiation applied at a selected angle of incidence, intensity and wavelength related to the refractive index of the feedstock material. Fine uniform particles may be formed through vapor explosion and/or plasma formation and used by this method to coat surfaces, such as with paint or adhesive or to supply uniform small particles to a heat engine. Moreover, moving materials such as a column of liquid may be subjected to high internal pressure and temperature for creating physical and chemical changes.

Inp Optical Constants Between 0.75 And 5.0 Ev Determined By Variable-Angle Spectroscopic Ellipsometry, C. M. Herzinger, Paul G. Snyder, B. Johs, John A. Woollam Feb 1995

Inp Optical Constants Between 0.75 And 5.0 Ev Determined By Variable-Angle Spectroscopic Ellipsometry, C. M. Herzinger, Paul G. Snyder, B. Johs, John A. Woollam

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Using variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry (VASE) InP optical constants for photon energies have been determined in the range from 0.75 to 5.0 eV, which includes the fundamental gap at 1.35 eV. Above 1.5 eV the results are consistent with previously measured pseudovalues from an oxide-stripped sample when a very thin residual over-layer is accounted for. They are also shown to be compatible with previously published prism measurements of refractive index below the band gap. Real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function are shown to be Kramers-Kronig (KK) self-consistent above the gap, and the KK analysis was used to extend the …

Tree Restructuring Approach To Mapping Problem In Cellular Architecture Fpgas, Narahari Ramineni Feb 1995

Tree Restructuring Approach To Mapping Problem In Cellular Architecture Fpgas, Narahari Ramineni

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis presents a new technique for mapping combinational circuits to Fine-Grain Cellular-Architecture FPGAs. We represent the netlist as the binary tree with decision variables associated with each node of the tree. The functionality of the tree nodes is chosen based on the target FPGA architecture. The proposed tree restructuring algorithms preserve local connectivity and allow direct mapping of the trees to the cellular array, thus eliminating the traditional routing phase. Also, predictability of the signal delays is a very important advantage of the developed approach. The developed bus-assignment algorithm efficiently utilizes the medium distance routing resources (buses). The method …

Design Of A Digital Compensation Filter, Nader Fakhry Feb 1995

Design Of A Digital Compensation Filter, Nader Fakhry

Dissertations and Theses

The 24-bit Motorola DSP56001 processor will be used in combination with the DSP56ADC16 and the PCM-56 to design a good FIR compensation filter. Our objective is to digitize the input analog signal, and to compensate for the attenuation in the magnitude response of the digital sine wave. Two different experiments will be conducted, a hands on approach, and a simulation program. The first one will be realized directly, using the DSP system. We will determine the magnitude response of the system, and then deduce the coefficients of the FIR sin(x)/x filter. A look up table will store those values which …
