Fault Tolerant Training For Optimal Interpolative Nets, Daniel J. Simon, Hossny El-Sherief
Fault Tolerant Training For Optimal Interpolative Nets, Daniel J. Simon, Hossny El-Sherief
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The optimal interpolative (OI) classification network is extended to include fault tolerance and make the network more robust to the loss of a neuron. The OI net has the characteristic that the training data are fit with no more neurons than necessary. Fault tolerance further reduces the number of neurons generated during the learning procedure while maintaining the generalization capabilities of the network. The learning algorithm for the fault-tolerant OI net is presented in a recursive formal, allowing for relatively short training times. A simulated fault-tolerant OI net is tested on a navigation satellite selection problem

Intelligent Control Of Vehicles: Preliminary Results On The Application Of Learning Automata Techniques To Automated Highway System, Cem Unsal, John S. Bay, Pushkin Kachroo
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
We suggest an intelligent controller for an automated vehicle to plan its own trajectory based on sensor and communication data received. Our intelligent controller is based on an artificial intelligence technique called learning stochastic automata. The automaton can learn the best possible action to avoid collisions using the data received from on-board sensors. The system has the advantage of being able to work in unmodeled stochastic environments. Simulations for the lateral control of a vehicle using this AI method provides encouraging results.
Integrating Reconstructed Scatterometer And Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer Data For Tropical Forest Inventory, David G. Long, Perry J. Hardin
Integrating Reconstructed Scatterometer And Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer Data For Tropical Forest Inventory, David G. Long, Perry J. Hardin
Faculty Publications
A scientific effort is currently underway to assess tropical forest degradation and its potential impact on Earth's climate. Because of the large continental regions involved, Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) imagery and its derivative vegetation index products with resolutions between 1 and 12 km are typically used to inventory the Earth's equatorial vegetation. Archival AVHRR imagery is also used to obtain a temporal baseline of historical forest extent. Recently however, 50-km Seasat-A Scatterometer (SASS) Ku-band imagery (acquired in 1978) has been reconstructed to = 4-km resolution, making it a supplement to AVHRR imagery for historical vegetation assessment. In order …

Algorithms For The Njit Turbonet Parallel Computer, Nitin J. Lad
Theses
Element selection for arrays, array merging, and sorting are very frequent operations in many of today's important applications. These operations are of interest to scientific, as well as other applications where high-speed database search, merge, and sort operations are necessary and frequent. Therefore, their efficient implementation on parallel computers should be a worthwhile objective. Parallel algorithms are presented in this thesis for the implementation of these operations on the NET TurboNet system, an in-house built experimental parallel computer with TMS320C40 Digital Signal Processors interconnected in a 3-D hypercube structure. The first algorithm considered is selection. It involves finding the k-th …
Performance Evaluation Of Specialized Hardware For Fast Global Operations On Distributed Memory Multicomputers, Rajesh Madukkarumukumana Sankaran
Performance Evaluation Of Specialized Hardware For Fast Global Operations On Distributed Memory Multicomputers, Rajesh Madukkarumukumana Sankaran
Dissertations and Theses
Workstation cluster multicomputers are increasingly being applied for solving scientific problems that require massive computing power. Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) is a popular message-passing model used to program these clusters. One of the major performance limiting factors for cluster multicomputers is their inefficiency in performing parallel program operations involving collective communications. These operations include synchronization, global reduction, broadcast/multicast operations and orderly access to shared global variables. Hall has demonstrated that a .secondary network with wide tree topology and centralized coordination processors (COP) could improve the performance of global operations on a variety of distributed architectures [Hall94a]. My hypothesis was that …

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor program (ITER) is a world wide collaboration to design and build the first new large scale tokamak fusion reactor of the 21st century. Under certain operating conditions the highly energetic plasma contained within a tokamak can become unstable and result in a loss of magnetic confinement, allowing the plasma to strike the interior of the vacuum chamber and cause damage. This event is known as a disruption. Plasma Facing Component (PFC) materials protect the interior of the tokamak from damage in the event of a disruption. Complex scaling laws have been used to estimate the …

Performance Analysis Of A Banyan Based Atm Switching Fabric With Packet Priority, Zhaohui Yan
Dissertations and Theses
Since the emergence of the Asynchronous Transfer Mode ( A TM ) concept, various switching architectures have been proposed. The multistage interconnection networks have been proposed for the switching architecture under the A TM environment. In this thesis, we propose a new model for the performance analysis of an A TM switching fabric based on single-buffered Banyan network. In this model, we use a three-state, i.e., "empty", "new" and "blocked" Markov chain model to describe the behavior of the buffer within a switching element. In addition to traditional statistical analysis including throughput and delay, we also examine the delay variation. …

Atomic Broadcast In Heterogeneous Distributed Systems, Osman Zeineldine
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Communication services have long been recognized as possessing a dominant effect on both performance and robustness of distributed systems. Distributed applications rely on a multitude of protocols for the support of these services. Of crucial importance are multicast protocols. Reliable multicast protocols enhance the efficiency and robustness of distributed systems. Numerous reliable multicast protocols have been proposed, each differing in the set of assumptions adopted, especially for the communication network. These assumptions make each protocol suitable for a specific environment. The presence of different distributed applications that run on different LANs and single distributed applications that span different LANs mandate …
Safe Stratified Datalog With Integer Order Programs, Peter Revesz
Safe Stratified Datalog With Integer Order Programs, Peter Revesz
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Guaranteeing termination of programs on all valid inputs is important for database applications. Termination cannot be guaranteed in Stratified Datalog with integer (gap)-order programs on generalized databases because they express any Turing-computable function. This paper introduces a restriction of those programs that can express only computable queries. The restricted language has a high expressive power and a non-elementary data complexity.

A Fuzzy Based Load Model For Power System Direct Load Control, K. Bhattacharyya, Mariesa Crow
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Demand side management programs are strategies designed to alter the shape of the load curve. In order to successfully implement such a strategy, customer acceptance of the program is vital. It is thus desirable to design a model for direct load control which may accommodate customer preferences. This paper presents a methodology for optimizing both customer satisfaction and utility unit commitment savings, based on a fuzzy load model for the direct load control of appliances.
Full Envelope Control Of Nonlinear Plants With Parameter Uncertainty By Fuzzy Controller Scheduling, Thomas J. Kobylarz
Full Envelope Control Of Nonlinear Plants With Parameter Uncertainty By Fuzzy Controller Scheduling, Thomas J. Kobylarz
Theses and Dissertations
A full envelope controller synthesis technique is developed for multiple-input single-output (MISO) nonlinear systems with structured parameter uncertainty. The technique maximizes the controller's valid region of operation, while guaranteeing pre-specified transient performance. The resulting controller does not require on-line adaptation, estimation, prediction or model identification. Fuzzy Logic (FL) is used to smoothly schedule independently designed point controllers over the operational envelope and parameter space of the system's model. These point controllers are synthesized using techniques chosen by the designer, thus allowing an unprecedented amount of design freedom. By using established control theory for the point controllers, the resulting nonlinear dynamic …

Optimal Inputs For System Identification, James M. Brown Ii
Optimal Inputs For System Identification, James M. Brown Ii
Theses and Dissertations
The derivation of the power spectral density of the optimal input for system identification is addressed in this research. Optimality is defined in information theoretic terms, with entropy quantifying the parameter information content of the input and output measurement sequences pertaining to a discrete time plant. The maximization of entropy is performed in the context of three different scenarios. First, the case in which the average output power of the plant is constrained is considered. Second, input average power is constrained. Finally, the optimization is carried out unconstrained, but with penalties applied to both the input and output powers. Although …

Mobility Modeling And Simulation Of Soi Si1-X Gex P-Mosfet, Sida Zhou
Dissertations and Theses
With increasing demand for complex and faster circuits, CMOS technologies are progressing towards the deep-submicron level. Process complexity increases dramatically, and costly techniques are to be developed to create dense field isolation and shallow junctions. Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) may solve some of these problems. On the other hand, strained Si1-x Gex layers have been successfully grown on Si substrates and demonstrated much higher hole mobility than bulk Si. This can be used to build high-mobility p-MOSFET with a buried Si1-x Gex channel. A high mobility p-MOSFET would improve both the circuit speed and the level of integration. …

Biquad Gm-C Structures Which Use Double-Output Transconductors, Vladimir I. Prodanov, Michael M. Green
Electrical Engineering
Two Gm-C biquad structures are derived. They use only two grounded capacitors and three transconductors, two of which have double-outputs. The realization of the double-output transconductors is discussed. It is shown that only two additional transistors are needed to convert a single-output transconductor to a double-output one suitable for implementation of the proposed structures. HSPICE simulations and experimental results of a 5-th order inverse Gaussian filter using the proposed biquad structures are given.
