An Experimental Procedure For Characterizing Interconnects To The Dc Power Bus On A Multilayer Printed Circuit Board, Hao Shi, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren, Fei Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effectiveness of dc power-bus decoupling is impacted by the inductance associated with interconnect vias in printed circuit boards (PCB's). Adequate characterization of these interconnects is necessary to facilitate modeling and simulation, and to assess the effectiveness of added decoupling. In this study, a measurement procedure is presented for determining the series inductance and resistance of an interconnect with a network analyzer. The validity and limitations of the procedure are discussed. Experimental results of interconnect parameters on an 8 × 10 in ten-layer test-board corroborate those measured with a precision impedance analyzer. The measured interconnect values are used to simulate …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Parasitic inductance in printed circuit board (PCB) geometries can detrimentally impact the electromagnetic interference(EMI) performance and signal integrity of high-speed digital designs. This paper identifies and quantifies the parameters that affect the inductance of some typical PCB geometries. Closed-form expressions are provided for estimating the inductances of simple trace and ground plane configurations.

Radiation Imaging Operators Applied To The Detection Of Velocity And Density Contrast Boundaries, Md. Ishfaqur Raza, Richard E. Dubroff, James L. Drewniak Nov 1997

Radiation Imaging Operators Applied To The Detection Of Velocity And Density Contrast Boundaries, Md. Ishfaqur Raza, Richard E. Dubroff, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A procedure for imaging interfaces formed by simultaneous density and velocity contrasts in acoustic media is described. The procedure is based on the properties of radiation imaging operators - a class of linear differential operators parametrically dependent on the acoustic properties of the media. An example of this procedure is demonstrated through the use of numerical simulation. Results, in the form of interface images, are shown, assuming the bulk acoustic characteristics (velocity and density) on both sides of the interface are known.

Spectroscopic Ellipsometry And Magneto-Optic Kerr Effects In Co/Pt Multilayers, Xiang Gao, Darin W. Glenn, Scott Heckens, Daniel W. Thompson, John A. Woollam

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Control of thickness and microstructure is critical in the preparation of ultrathin metallic multilayers for magneto-optic memory, computer read heads, and improved wear surfaces. This paper describes use of in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry to calibrate sputter deposition rates, control layer thicknesses, determine optical constants, and study oxidation rates and processes. In this work, the information gained in situ is used together with ex situ Kerr measurements to determine the complete magneto-optic response including the spectroscopic figure of merit for Co/Pt multilayers.

Simulation Study Of Learning Automata Games In Automated Highway Systems, Cem Unsal, Pushkin Kachroo, John S. Bay Nov 1997

Simulation Study Of Learning Automata Games In Automated Highway Systems, Cem Unsal, Pushkin Kachroo, John S. Bay

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

One of the most important issues in Automated Highway System (AHS) deployment is intelligent vehicle control. While the technology to safely maneuver vehicles exists, the problem of making intelligent decisions to improve a single vehicle’s travel time and safety while optimizing the overall traffic flow is still a stumbling block. We propose an artificial intelligence technique called stochastic learning automata to design an intelligent vehicle path controller. Using the information obtained by on-board sensors and local communication modules, two automata are capable of learning the best possible (lateral and longitudinal) actions to avoid collisions. This learning method is capable of …

Sliding Mode For User Equilibrium Dynamic Traffic Routing Control, Pushkin Kachroo, Kaan Ozbay Nov 1997

Sliding Mode For User Equilibrium Dynamic Traffic Routing Control, Pushkin Kachroo, Kaan Ozbay

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

Presents a solution to the user equilibrium dynamic traffic routing (DTR) problem for a point diversion case using feedback control methodology. The sliding mode control technique which is a robust control methodology applicable to nonlinear systems in canonical form is employed to solve the user equilibrium DTR problem. The canonical form for this problem is obtained by using a feedback linearization technique, and the uncertainties of the system are countered by using the sliding mode principle. Simulation results show promising results.

Waterfall Lasers, Lee W. Casperson Nov 1997

Waterfall Lasers, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Laser concepts can be applied to a broad range of physical phenomena. One of the closest parallels occurs with the fluttering oscillations that are sometimes observed in the falling sheets of water associated with fountains, dams, and natural waterfalls. In many respects these fluid feedback oscillations are similar to the electromagnetic modes of typical lasers, and recognition of this similarity led to the interpretation of the waterfall behavior. Gain profiles for the waterfall oscillations are developed, and the relationship of experimental waterfall data to the laser-like models is considered in detail.

Microstrip Zero-Sum Antenna; Cad And Experimental Study, Tuan H. Lam Oct 1997

Microstrip Zero-Sum Antenna; Cad And Experimental Study, Tuan H. Lam

Theses

A microstrip antenna array consisting of two elements combined with a stripline hybrid (rat-race) ring coupler is used to implement a zero-sum antenna. Numerical optimization of individual antenna elements in terms of feed location and patch size was achieved using IE3D (Zeland Software Inc., Fremont, CA), a fullwave 3-D planar electromagnetic simulation software. Further, design of a hybrid (rat-race) ring coupler in a stripline environment was carried out, yielding the sum and difference functions as 0.5 dB and 40 dB, respectively. A combination of a two-element antenna array and a hybrid (rat-race) ring coupler as a zero sum antenna has …

Motion-Compensating Long-Term Memory Prediction, Thomas Wiegand, Xiaozheng Zhang, Bernd Girod Oct 1997

Motion-Compensating Long-Term Memory Prediction, Thomas Wiegand, Xiaozheng Zhang, Bernd Girod

Electrical Engineering

Motion-compensating long-term memory prediction extends the spatial displacement utilized in block-based hybrid video coding by a variable time delay permitting the use of more frames than the previously decoded one for motion compensation. The long-term memory covers the decoded frames of some seconds at encoder and decoder. We investigate the influence of memory size in our motion compensation scheme and analyze the trade-off between the bit-rates spent for motion compensated prediction and residual coding. Simulation results are obtained by integrating long-term memory prediction into an H.263 codec. PSNR improvements up to 2 dB for the Foreman sequence and 1.5 dB …

Design And Implementation Of Digital Controllers For Smart Structures Using Field Programmable Gate Arrays, Jamie S. Kelly, Vittal S. Rao, Hardy J. Pottinger, H. Clifford Bowman

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Implementation issues represent an unfamiliar challenge to most control engineers, and many techniques for controller design ignore these issues outright. Consequently, the design of controlled for smart structural systems usually proceeds without regard for their eventual implementation, thus resulting either in serious performance degradation or in hardware requirements that squander power, complicate integration, and drive up cost the level of integration assumed by the smart patch further exacerbates these difficulties, and any design inefficiency may render the realization of a single-package sensor-controller-actuator system infeasible. The goal of this research is to automate the controller implementation process and to relieve the …

Selective Cvd Growth Of Diamond Crystals On Tungsten, Charles Randal Cole Oct 1997

Selective Cvd Growth Of Diamond Crystals On Tungsten, Charles Randal Cole

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Typical field emitters consist of sharp metal tips which usually have a short life due to erosion and contamination. To improve the performance of regular field emitters, diamond can be placed on the emitter tip. This is done by selectively growing diamond on tungsten tips using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) processing. Diamond exhibits negative electron affinity, so that electrons will be emitted by properly biasing the tip.

To obtain single crystal growth right at the tip, a cantilever controlled nucleation method was developed which worked better than other methods. Surface preparation was also important to the growth process. An oxide …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Spectroscopic ellipsometry over the spectral range from 700 to 3000 cm-1 and from 1.5 to 3.5 eV is used to simultaneously determine phase and microstructure of polycrystalline hexagonal and cubic boron nitride thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering on (100) silicon. The results are obtained from a single microstructure-dependent model for both infrared and visible-light thin-film anisotropic dielectric functions. The optical behavior of high c-BN content thin films is described by an effective medium approximation. We obtain the amount of h-BN within high c-BN content thin films. A thin oriented nucleation layer between the silicon substrate …

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the integrated circuit industry needs for non-isothermal simulation in device reliability analysis, initial input factor sensitivity analysis and their software implementation. The key reliability issues are the hot-electron induced oxide damages and electro-static discharge (ESD) damages. The main purpose of this work is to provide a design aid tool to improve device reliability and performance. The reliability simulator developed in this work not only predicts designed device reliability, but also provides some information about the effect of manufacturing variations on reliability. This is accomplished by combining the statistical methodology with existing technology computer aided design (TCAD) tools. …

Block-Based Hybrid Video Coding Using Motion-Compensated Long-Term Memory Prediction, Thomas Wiegand, Xiaozheng Zhang, Bernd Girod Sep 1997

Block-Based Hybrid Video Coding Using Motion-Compensated Long-Term Memory Prediction, Thomas Wiegand, Xiaozheng Zhang, Bernd Girod

Electrical Engineering

Our new approach extends the spatial displacement vector utilized in block-based hybrid video coding by a variable time delay permitting the use of more frames than the previously decoded one for motion compensation. The longterm memory covers the decoded frames of some seconds at the encoder's as well as the decoder's side. This scheme is well suited in cases of repetition in the sequence, e.g. a head is rotating back into its old position, or if the camera is shaking. However, transmission of the variable time delay requires additional bit-rate which may be prohibitive when the size of the long-term …

Adaptive Critic Designs, Danil V. Prokhorov, Donald C. Wunsch Sep 1997

Adaptive Critic Designs, Danil V. Prokhorov, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We discuss a variety of adaptive critic designs (ACDs) for neurocontrol. These are suitable for learning in noisy, nonlinear, and nonstationary environments. They have common roots as generalizations of dynamic programming for neural reinforcement learning approaches. Our discussion of these origins leads to an explanation of three design families: heuristic dynamic programming, dual heuristic programming, and globalized dual heuristic programming (GDHP). The main emphasis is on DHP and GDHP as advanced ACDs. We suggest two new modifications of the original GDHP design that are currently the only working implementations of GDHP. They promise to be useful for many engineering applications …

Azimuthal Modulation Of C-Band Scatterometer Over Southern Ocean Sea Ice, David G. Long, David S. Early Sep 1997

Azimuthal Modulation Of C-Band Scatterometer Over Southern Ocean Sea Ice, David G. Long, David S. Early

Faculty Publications

In a continuing evaluation of the ERS-1 C-band scatterometer as a tool for studying polar sea ice, the authors evaluate the azimuthal modulation characteristics of Antarctic sea ice. ERS-1 AMI scatterometer mode data sets from several study regions dispersed in the Antarctic seasonal sea ice pack are evaluated for azimuthal modulation. When appropriate, the incidence angle dependence is estimated and removed in a study region before determining whether azimuthal modulation is present in the data. Other comparisons are made using the fore and aft beam measurement difference. The results show that over the ice pack, azimuthal modulation is less than …

Modeling Intelligent Control Of Distributed Cooperative Inferencing, Edward M. Williams Sep 1997

Modeling Intelligent Control Of Distributed Cooperative Inferencing, Edward M. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to harness different problem-solving methods together into a cooperative system has the potential for significantly improving the performance of systems for solving NP-hard problems. The need exists for an intelligent controller that is able to effectively combine radically different problem-solving techniques with anytime and anywhere properties into a distributed cooperative environment. This controller requires models of the component algorithms in conjunction with feedback from those algorithms during run-time to manage a dynamic combination of tasks effectively. This research develops a domain-independent method for creating these models as well as a model for the controller itself. These models provide …

Parameter Estimation For Real Filtered Sinusoids, Daniel R. Zahirniak Sep 1997

Parameter Estimation For Real Filtered Sinusoids, Daniel R. Zahirniak

Theses and Dissertations

This research develops theoretical methods for parameter estimation of filtered, pulsed sinusoids in noise and demonstrates their effectiveness for Electronic Warfare EW applications. Within the context of stochastic modeling, a new linear model, parameterized by a set of Linear Prediction LP coefficients, is derived for estimating the frequencies of filtered sinusoids. This model is an improvement over previous modeling techniques since the effects of the filter and the coefficients upon the noise statistics are properly accounted for during model development. From this linear model, a relationship between LP coefficient estimation and Maximum Likelihood ML frequency estimation is derived and several …

Color Image Filters: The Vector Directional Approach, Konstantinos N. Kostas Plataniotis, Dimitrios Androutsos

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Processing of color image data using directional information has received increased attention lately due to the introduction of the vector directional filters. These rank-ordered type filters utilize the direction of color vectors to enhance, restore and segment color images. First, the different vector directional filters already in use are presented, focusing on their similarities and differences and, second, new adaptive vector directional filters are introduced. Fuzzy as well as nearest neighbor structures are utilized to determine the weights in the proposed adaptive filters. Simulation studies involving color images are used to assess the performance of the different vector directional filters …

Electrocatalytic Oxidation Of Methanol On The Stearate Nickel L-B Film, Benzeng Hua, Wenyan Hu, Yanzhen Chen, Yanhong Zhang Aug 1997

Electrocatalytic Oxidation Of Methanol On The Stearate Nickel L-B Film, Benzeng Hua, Wenyan Hu, Yanzhen Chen, Yanhong Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The stearate nickel L-B films is good electroacatlyst for the oxidation of methanol MeOH in alkaline. The electrochemical behaviors of stearate nickel L-B films is affected by the concentration of KOH. The rate of quantity of mickel ion and stearic acid in L-B films is 1∶1, which means that the nickel ion may exist in -COONi(OH) form. The electrocatalytic process is influenced by the concentration of OH-, it involves the penetration of MeOH into the films. The oxidative currents of MeOH are linearly dependent on the bulk concentration.

Surface Modifications Of Carbon Materials Used As Anode Of Lithium Ion Battery Ⅲ. Improvement Of Artificially Imposed Solid Electrolyte Film On Cell Performance, Shuhua Ma, Xiabin Jing, Fosong Wang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The improving effect of solid electrolyte film artificially imposed on carbon electrode was investigated. The result showed that both the charge/discharge capacity and first charge/discharge efficiency, to a certain extent, were enhanced, and the result also suggested the effectiveness of the substitution of the artificially imposed solid electrolyte film for the inherent passivating film which was formed on the surface of the carbon electrode while inserted in the electrolyte during charging or discharging. The Scanning Electron Microscope result displayed the compact and well-defined morphology of the artificially imposed crystalline film.

Investigation On Electro Reduction Behaviour Of Copper Anodic Products In Concentrated Naoh Solutions Ⅱ. Electro Reduction Of Cu(Ⅱ) Products, Jianbo He, Hanhe Chen, Jianxin Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

Potentiostatic oxidation potentiodynamic or galvanostatic reduction methods have been used to study the cathodic reduction behaviour of various products anodically formed on the second stage of copper oxidation in concentrated NaOH solutions. Seven cathodic current peaks and the corresponding cathodic potential plateaus are observed on the potentiodynamic E/i curves and the galvanostatic E/t curves, respectively. In the negative potential scan, there are three couples of voltammetric peaks which have been attributed to the formation and reduction of CuO, Cu(OH)2 and Cu(Ⅱ) ion, respectively. The complicated mechanism for the electro formation of the three Cu(Ⅱ) species are discussed.

Studies On The Failure Modes Of Stationary Vrla Batteries, Yibo Tong, Xiangming Qiu Aug 1997

Studies On The Failure Modes Of Stationary Vrla Batteries, Yibo Tong, Xiangming Qiu

Journal of Electrochemistry

In order to improve the reliability and the quality of stationary valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries, the failure modes of the stationary VRLA batteries which caused by the water loss and the thermal runaway are studied. The water loss may be solved by increasing the Oxygen-recombination efficiency, choosing the suitable grid material and the additives of megative paste, decreasing the corrosion of the positive plates. The thermal runaway may be solved by decreasing the inner ohmic resistance of VRLA batteries, improving the outside condition of batteries such as putting into the absorbing-heat material between the abtteries etc..

Preparation And Examination Of Planar Type Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Yi Jiang, Jingwang Yan, Shizhong Wang, Chunying Yu, Wenzhao Li Aug 1997

Preparation And Examination Of Planar Type Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Yi Jiang, Jingwang Yan, Shizhong Wang, Chunying Yu, Wenzhao Li

Journal of Electrochemistry

The solid oxide fuel cells of planar type (SOFC) have been developed after successfully preparing La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 cathodes and Ni-YSZ ceramic anodes on YSZ plates and solving the high temperature sealing technical problem. Examination of the single cells fabricated showed that the maximum power output at 950 ℃ for H2 as fuel and air as oxidant reached 0.12 W/cm2. It was found that the large polarization overpotential of the Ni-YSZ anode and the Ohmic losses of the cells were two main factors responsible for the relative low output power density.

Spectrally Sensitive Wavelet Analysis Of Multispectral Imagery For Object Detection, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Ty Olmstead Aug 1997

Spectrally Sensitive Wavelet Analysis Of Multispectral Imagery For Object Detection, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Ty Olmstead

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

We used a 3D wavelet denoising method to reduce noise from multispectral imagery so that small objects may be more readily detected. Our approach exploits the correlation between bands typically present in multispectral imagery. Using our approach, the resulting image generally consists of a weighted sum of both spectral bands and spatial frequencies. We found that we could generally increase the SNR of a multispectral image more than if the spectral bands were processed independently.

Emi From Apertures At Enclosure Cavity Mode Resonances, Min Li, Yun Ji, S. Radu, Joe Nuebel, Wei Cui, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

EMI from slots and apertures resulting from coupling of interior sources through enclosure cavity modes in a Sun S-1000 workstation was investigated. The excitation of a specially designed rectangular enclosure with a slot was also studied experimentally and with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. The radiated power results for both the S-1000 and simple rectangular enclosure indicate that radiation at cavity mode resonance frequencies through slots and apertures can be as significant as at aperture or slot resonances. A decrease of the radiation through the slots and apertures can be achieved by employing a lossy material in the enclosure.
