A Parallel Pipelined Computer Architecture For Digital Signal Processing, Haluk Gümüşkaya, Bülent Örenci̇k

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a parallel pipelined computer architecture and its six network configurations targeted for the implementation of a wide range of digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms described by both atomic and large grain data flow graphs. The proposed architecture is considered together with programmability, yielding a system solution that combines extensive concurrency with simple programming. It is an SSIMD (Skewed Single Instruction Multiple Data) or MIMD (Multiple Instruction Multiple Data) machine depending on the algorithms implemented and the programming methodologies. The concurrency that can be exploited by the algorithms using this Parallel pipelined architecture is both temporal and spatial …

Hierarchical Interconnection Network Architecture For Real-Time Systems, Bülent Örenci̇k Jan 1998

Hierarchical Interconnection Network Architecture For Real-Time Systems, Bülent Örenci̇k

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A hierarchical network suitable for interconnection of real-time client processes in a distributed multiprocessor environment is presented in this paper. A multi-layer {\it Communication Unit} (CU) prototype is developed for this purpose. This unit offers the client processes communication services for real-time operation. These services are structured in such a way that they do not depend on the characteristics of the communication medium. The basic hardware of the CU consists of a PC compatible card connected to the VME Bus. Client processes run on target cards (Motorola MVME-162) which are attached to the same bus. Target cards together with a …

Imaging Tissue Conductivity Via Contactless Measurements: A Feasibility Study, Nevzat G. Gençer, M. Nejat Tek Jan 1998

Imaging Tissue Conductivity Via Contactless Measurements: A Feasibility Study, Nevzat G. Gençer, M. Nejat Tek

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The feasibility of a new imaging system is investigated. This system will be used to image electrical conductivity distribution of biological tissues via contactless measurements. This will be achieved by introducing currents in the conductive medium using time-varying magnetic fields and measuring the magnetic fields of the induced currents. Consequently, the imaging system consists of transmitter and receiver coils placed nearby the conductive body. In this study, the basic features of the coplanar and coaxial coils are studied. The validity of the simplifying assumptions for the governing field equations is investigated. It is found that, for operating frequency of 100 …

Few-Cycle Pulses In Two-Level Media, Lee W. Casperson Jan 1998

Few-Cycle Pulses In Two-Level Media, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Techniques for producing, measuring, and applying ever shorter electromagnetic pulses are being developed for incorporation in a variety of modern high-speed systems. In many cases these pulses are at most a few cycles in length, and so-called half-cycle electromagnetic pulses are also widely employed. The interaction of such pulses with two-level media is considered here in detail, and these media are basic to many of the absorbing and amplifying configurations of optics and laser studies. Significant delays and distortion of the resulting polarization and population pulses can occur, and nonlinear optical effects are also revealed. The limitations of the parity, …

Exact Graph Coloring For Functional Decomposition: Do We Need It?, Marek Perkowski, Rahul Malvi, Lech Jozwiak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Finding column multiplicity index is one of important component processes in functional decomposition of discrete functions for circuit design and especially Data Mining applications. How important it is to solve this problem exactly from the point of view of the minimum complexity of decomposition, and related to it error in Machine Learning type of applications? In order to investigate this problem we wrote two graph coloring programs: exact program EXOC and approximate program DOM (DOM cab give provably exact results on some types of graphs). These programs were next incorporated into the multi-valued decomposer of functions and relations NVGUD. Extensive …

Multi-Level Programmable Arrays For Sub-Micron Technology Based On Symmetries, Marek Perkowski, Malgorzata Chrzanowska-Jeske, Yang Xu Jan 1998

Multi-Level Programmable Arrays For Sub-Micron Technology Based On Symmetries, Marek Perkowski, Malgorzata Chrzanowska-Jeske, Yang Xu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Regular layout is a fundamental concept in VLSI design which can have application in custom design for submicron technologies, designing new architectures for fine-grain Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and Electrically Programmable logic Devices (EPLDs), and minimization of logic functions for existing FPGAs. PLAs are well known examples of regular layouts. Lattice diagrams are another type of regular layouts that have been recently introduced for layout-driven logic synthesis. In this paper we extend and combine theses two ideas, by introducing the multi-level PLA-like structures, composed from multi-output (pseudo) symmetrical lattice planes and other planes (multi-input, multi-output regular blocks). The main …

Atomic Hydrogen Cleaning Of Inp(100) For Preparation Of A Negative Electron Affinity Photocathode, K. A. Elamrawi, M. A. Hafez, H. E. Elsayed-Ali Jan 1998

Atomic Hydrogen Cleaning Of Inp(100) For Preparation Of A Negative Electron Affinity Photocathode, K. A. Elamrawi, M. A. Hafez, H. E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Atomic hydrogen cleaning is used to clean InP(100) negative electron affinity photocathodes. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction patterns of reconstructed, phosphorus-stabilized, InP(100) surfaces are obtained after cleaning at ∼400 °C. These surfaces produce high quantum efficiency photocathodes (∼8.5%), in response to 632.8 nm light. Without atomic hydrogen cleaning, activation of InP to negative electron affinity requires heating to ∼530 °C. At this high temperature, phosphorus evaporates preferentially and a rough surface is obtained. These surfaces produce low quantum efficiency photocathodes (∼0.1%). The use of reflection high-energy electron diffraction to measure the thickness of the deposited cesium layer during activation by correlating …

Temperature Dependence Of Step Density On Vicinal Pb(111), Z. H. Zhang, H. E. Elsayed-Ali Jan 1998

Temperature Dependence Of Step Density On Vicinal Pb(111), Z. H. Zhang, H. E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The temperature dependence of step density on the vicinal Pb(111) surface is investigated using reflection high-energy electron diffraction. When the temperature is increased from 323 to 590 K. the average terrace width and the average string length at the step edge decrease from 85±25 to 37±16 Å and from 220±33 to 25±8 Å, respectively. Thermal step collapse on the Pb(111) surface near its bulk melting temperature is not observed. Above 530±7 K, the change in the string length at the step edge with temperature becomes small, and the intensity of the (00) beam is significantly decreased. We conclude that partial …

Comparative Study Of Stock Trend Prediction Using Time Delay, Recurrent And Probabilistic Neural Networks, Donald C. Wunsch, Emad W. Saad, Danil V. Prokhorov Jan 1998

Comparative Study Of Stock Trend Prediction Using Time Delay, Recurrent And Probabilistic Neural Networks, Donald C. Wunsch, Emad W. Saad, Danil V. Prokhorov

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Three networks are compared for low false alarm stock trend predictions. Short-term trends, particularly attractive for neural network analysis, can be used profitably in scenarios such as option trading, but only with significant risk. Therefore, we focus on limiting false alarms, which improves the risk/reward ratio by preventing losses. To predict stock trends, we exploit time delay, recurrent, and probabilistic neural networks (TDNN, RNN, and PNN, respectively), utilizing conjugate gradient and multistream extended Kalman filter training for TDNN and RNN. We also discuss different predictability analysis techniques and perform an analysis of predictability based on a history of daily closing …

Millimeter Wave Signals Detection By Means Of Monocrystal Hexagonal Ferrite Ellipsoid, Marina Koledintseva, Alexander A. Kitaytsev

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Stable nonlinear resonance effects (SNLREs) have been already studied in crystallographically "isotropic" ferrogarnet ferrite resonators (FR), employed as microwave detectors in the frequency range of 300 MHz to 30 GHz. Application of prospective hexagonal monocrystal ferrites with large field of crystallographic magnetic anisotropy leads to the possibility of a gyromagnetic converter (GC) design for mm waveband (from 30 to 200 GHz) without massive external magnets. This paper deals with the analysis of a more general case with taking into account both crystallographic and form anisotropy as well as the arbitrary orientation of the main crystallographic axis with respect to the …

Simulation Studies With A Continuously Online Trained Artificial Neural Network Controller For A Micro-Turbogenerator, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper reports on the simulation studies carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK and the practical implementation of a continuously online trained (COT) artificial neural network (ANN) controller to identify the continuous changing complex nonlinear dynamics of the power system, and another COT ANN to control a micro-turbogenerator which consists of a turbine simulator and a micro-alternator connected to an infinite bus through a short transmission line in a laboratory environment. This neural network controller augments/replaces the traditional automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and the turbine governor of the generator. Simulation and practical results are presented to show that this COT ANN identifier/controller …

Dc Link Stabilized Field Oriented Control Of Electric Propulsion Systems, Keith Corzine, S. D. Sudhoff, Steven F. Glover, H. J. Hegner, H. N. Robey Jan 1998

Dc Link Stabilized Field Oriented Control Of Electric Propulsion Systems, Keith Corzine, S. D. Sudhoff, Steven F. Glover, H. J. Hegner, H. N. Robey

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Induction motor based electric propulsion systems can be used in a wide variety of applications including locomotives, hybrid electric vehicles, and ships. Field oriented control of these drives is attractive since it allows the torque to be tightly and nearly instantaneously controlled. However, such systems can be prone to negative impedance instability of the DC link. This paper examines this type of instability and sets forth a readily implemented albeit nonlinear control strategy to mitigate this potential problem.

The Investigation Of The Relaxation Process In Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystals By Electro-Optic Spectroscopy, Yuri Panarin, O. Kalinovskaya, J.K. Vij Jan 1998

The Investigation Of The Relaxation Process In Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystals By Electro-Optic Spectroscopy, Yuri Panarin, O. Kalinovskaya, J.K. Vij

Articles

Electrooptic spectroscopy of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal is carried out over a range of frequencies from 1 Hz to 100 kHz. In the antiferroelectric SmCA phase two relaxation processes are found, one at the fundamental frequency of a mode and the second at twice the frequency of a different mode. A comparison of the results of the electro-optic spectroscopy with a theoretical study of the motion of the director of an antiferroelectric helix subject to a weak alternating field enables a determination of the origin of the relaxation processes in antiferroelectric phases. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Signal Processing Topics In Multicarrier Modulation : Frequency Offset Correction For Ofdm And Multiuser Interference Cancellation For Mc-Cdma, Pingping Zong Jan 1998

Signal Processing Topics In Multicarrier Modulation : Frequency Offset Correction For Ofdm And Multiuser Interference Cancellation For Mc-Cdma, Pingping Zong

Theses

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is discussed as a special form of multi-carrier modulation (MCM). One major problem of the OFDM system is the sensitivity to an unknown frequency offset at the receiver. To improve the performance of the OFDM system, correction of the frequency offset is required before decision making. An adaptive method of frequency offset correction is presented. The adaptation algorithm used here is based on the LMS and the estimation is proven unbiased. A multiuser communications system having similar signal structure to the OFDM system, termed as multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA), is discussed. The MC-CDMA …

Macros By Example In A Graphical Uims, Dan R. Olsen Jr., Jonathan Turner, Stephen Bart Wood, John R. Dance Jan 1998

Macros By Example In A Graphical Uims, Dan R. Olsen Jr., Jonathan Turner, Stephen Bart Wood, John R. Dance

Faculty Publications

A macro facility that allows end users to extend interactive graphical applications is presented as part of a user-interface management system (UIMS). Such macros are expressed by example; that is, the end user programs the macro in the application's generated user interface. Problems with macros-by-example in graphical applications are explored, and requirements to accommodate such a facility are defined for the UIMS dialogue model. Existing UIMS models are reviewed relative to these requirements, and the unique facilities of the MIKE (menu interaction kontrol environment) semantics-based model are presented. The implementation of the macro-by-example system is discussed, as well as the …

Markovian Decision Control For Traffic Signal Systems, Xiao-Hua Yu, Allen R. Stubberud Dec 1997

Markovian Decision Control For Traffic Signal Systems, Xiao-Hua Yu, Allen R. Stubberud

Electrical Engineering

Setting signals at intersections to minimize the queue length and vehicle delay time is a key goal in traffic management. In this paper, a new control strategy for a signalized traffic intersection is developed by applying Markovian decision control theory. Statistical analysis of simulation results with different arrival rates indicate the excellent potential of this approach.

Optimal Block Encoding And Optimal Entropy For Lossless Image Compression, Larry Ray Dennis Dec 1997

Optimal Block Encoding And Optimal Entropy For Lossless Image Compression, Larry Ray Dennis

Dissertations and Theses

In this thesis, a novel approach is designed using a quad-tree stack structure to encode the image to determine the optimal block size at the optimal and effective entropy in the lossless image compression method. Proof is given through encoding of the predictor and randomly constructed planes. There is a high degree of relationship between the placement of bits in the planes. Clearly results shows that use of the optimal entropy and encoding block sizes will increase the compression ratio using the lossless method. The cost of using the block size methods to encoding and entropy is discussed and proven. …

The Development Of Electromechanical Batteries For Power System Support And For Short-Term Standby Power, Michael Peter O'Leary Dec 1997

The Development Of Electromechanical Batteries For Power System Support And For Short-Term Standby Power, Michael Peter O'Leary

Masters

The slow move from a fossil-fuel powered society to a renewable-energy powered society is creating and will continue to create a demand for good energy storage techniques. The electromechanical battery (EMB), comprising a flywheel energy storage system with electrical input and output, is one of the many candidate technologies. Two different EMB types are evaluated in this present project. The first is a ring (or annular) flywheel to be constructed using fibre composite materials and to rotate at high speed in a vacuum. Energy is to be imported and exported electromagnetically based on linear electrical machine principles. Confinement of the …

Joint Map Registration And High Resolution Image Estimation Using A Sequence Of Undersampled Images, Russell C. Hardie, Kenneth J. Barnard, Ernest E. Armstrong Dec 1997

Joint Map Registration And High Resolution Image Estimation Using A Sequence Of Undersampled Images, Russell C. Hardie, Kenneth J. Barnard, Ernest E. Armstrong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

n many imaging systems, the detector array is not sufficiently dense to adequately sample the scene with the desired field of view. This is particularly true for many infrared focal plane arrays. Thus, the resulting images may be severely aliased. This paper examines a technique for estimating a high-resolution image, with reduced aliasing, from a sequence of undersampled frames. Several approaches to this problem have been investigated previously. However, in this paper a maximum a posteriori (MAP) framework for jointly estimating image registration parameters and the high-resolution image is presented. Several previous approaches have relied on knowing the registration parameters …

A Single Chip Low Power Implementation Of An Asynchronous Fft Algorithm For Space Applications, Bruce W. Hunt Dec 1997

A Single Chip Low Power Implementation Of An Asynchronous Fft Algorithm For Space Applications, Bruce W. Hunt

Theses and Dissertations

A fully asynchronous fixed point FFT processor is introduced for low power space applications. The architecture is based on an algorithm developed by Suter and Stevens specifically for a low power implementation. The novelty of this architecture lies in its high localization of components and pipelining with no need to share a global memory. High throughput is attained using large numbers of small, local components working in parallel. A derivation of the algorithm from the discrete Fourier transform is presented followed by a discussion of circuit design parameters specifically, those relevant to space applications. The generic architecture is explained with …

Scattering From Dielectric Bodies, Jeffery M. Parks

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop an RCS measured database of non-PEC targets and provide an example of its use to validate a code, 3D-RCIE. RCS prediction codes that handle penetrable materials require measured data to determine their accuracy. The materials used for this research include polyethylene and polyurethane with dielectric constants around 2.3 and 1.03, respectively. The polyethylene targets include a mini-arrow, ogive, conesphere, conesphere with a gap, sphere, and a large and small cube. The cubes were the only targets made from the polyurethane foam. Additionally, r-card was applied to the cubes and mini-arrow. The material …

Analog Hardware Implementation Of Adaptive Filter Structures, Jui Kuo Juan, J. G. Harris, J. C. Principe Dec 1997

Analog Hardware Implementation Of Adaptive Filter Structures, Jui Kuo Juan, J. G. Harris, J. C. Principe

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have implemented a four-tap adaptive filter in a continuous-time analog VLSI circuit. Since an ideal delay is impossible to implement in continuous-time hardware, we implemented the delay line as a cascade of low-pass filters (called the Gamma filter). Since many years of research in our lab has shown that the Gamma filter outperforms the delay line for a wide range of applications, the Gamma filter should not be considered merely a crude approximation of the ideal delay line. We show measured results from an analog chip that solves the problem of system identification-identifying an unknown linear circuit from its …

A Dispersive Scattering Center, Parametric Model For 1-D Atr, Dane F. Fuller Dec 1997

A Dispersive Scattering Center, Parametric Model For 1-D Atr, Dane F. Fuller

Theses and Dissertations

The dispersive scattering center (DSC) model characterizes high-frequency backscatter from radar targets as a finite sum of localized scattering geometries distributed in range, these geometries, along with their relative locations, can be conveniently used as features in a one-dimensional automatic target recognition (ATR) algorithm. The DSC model's type and range parameters correspond to geometry and distance features according to the geometric theory of diffraction (GTD). Since these parameters are estimated in the phase history domain of the radar signal, the range parameter does provide superresolution in the time domain. To demonstrate the viability of feature extraction based on the DSC …

Secondary Data Support And Non-Homogeneities In Space-Time Adaptive Processing, Todd B. Hale Dec 1997

Secondary Data Support And Non-Homogeneities In Space-Time Adaptive Processing, Todd B. Hale

Theses and Dissertations

One of the primary problems with the application of Space-Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) techniques is secondary data support for the interference plus noise covariance matrix estimate. Reed has shown the required secondary data support to achieve performance within 3 dB of optimal SINR is approximately equal to twice the degrees of freedom (DOF) used in the algorithm. Reed proved this rule for Sample Matrix Inversion (SMI) techniques. A concern arises when applying this rule to a newer class of reduced dimension STAP algorithms that do not fall under the SMI umbrella. This thesis focuses on the Cross Spectral Metric (CSM) …

Optimized Design Methodology Of Cavity-Backed Microstrip Antennas With Dielectric Overlays, Douglas J. Hermes Dec 1997

Optimized Design Methodology Of Cavity-Backed Microstrip Antennas With Dielectric Overlays, Douglas J. Hermes

Theses and Dissertations

The optimized design methodology implemented in this research employs a design methodology, namely Response Surface Methodology (RSM), that is relatively new to the electromagnetics field. The design methodology used a full factorial designed experiment, a Hybrid Finite Element Method (HFEM) analysis code, a cubic spline empirical model, an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test, and a simplex optimization code to successfully measure, predict, analyze, and optimize average antenna gain and antenna input impedance for a cavity backed microstrip antenna with dielectric overlays. Based on HFEM results from the full factorial designed experiment, a cubic spline empirical model successfully predicted average antenna …

Micro-Electromechanical Switches For Micro-Satellite Power Transfer, Glen A. Kading Dec 1997

Micro-Electromechanical Switches For Micro-Satellite Power Transfer, Glen A. Kading

Theses and Dissertations

In the past few years, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have emerged as a promising new technology with tremendous application potential. One of the possible implementations of MEMS technology is in the development of micro-satellites. It should be possible to mass-produce micro-satellites at a fraction of the cost of one conventional satellite. In order for satellites to be robust, a method of transferring power to systems must be addressed. As micro-satellites are made with conventional integrated circuit technologies at a very small scale, a means of transferring power on a similar scale will be investigated. This research addresses the issue of the …

User Location Determination Strategy In A Low Earth Orbit Satellite Network, Jaehee Lee Dec 1997

User Location Determination Strategy In A Low Earth Orbit Satellite Network, Jaehee Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Recently, many Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite systems have been proposed for the purpose of global communication and one of those systems is planned to start the commercial service in 1998. These LEO satellite systems are providing most of current communication services (voice, fax, data, paging, and even real time video service) without any limitation on place and time. However, little is published about their detail system methodology on user tracking and managing schemes. This thesis presents two user location tracking algorithms in a LEO environment. One (Gateway Approach) is the most likely approach under present system proposals, while the …

Atmospheric Turbulence Scintillation Effects On Wavefront Tilt Estimation, James A. Louthain Dec 1997

Atmospheric Turbulence Scintillation Effects On Wavefront Tilt Estimation, James A. Louthain

Theses and Dissertations

A new atmospheric turbulence screen generator is developed for use in performance calculations of adaptive optics systems valid over a wide range of atmospheric turbulence parameters. The screen generator accounts for diffraction effects caused by weak turbulence and incorporates the phase, amplitude, and cross statistics of the perturbed optical field. The wavefront's phase and amplitude perturbations are taken from the correlation functions developed by Lee and Harp and the cross correlation of the phase and amplitude derived in this thesis. The screen generator uses a modal representation to perform a Fourier series expansion of the wavefront phase and amplitude over …
