Study On Nano Electrode Material Of Lithium Ion Batteries, Jinkua You, Yong Yang, Dong Shu, Shenghui Wu, Yingchun Zhang, Zugeng Lin Feb 1998

Study On Nano Electrode Material Of Lithium Ion Batteries, Jinkua You, Yong Yang, Dong Shu, Shenghui Wu, Yingchun Zhang, Zugeng Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this paper, the structure and morphology of the nano phase electrode materials have been characterized with XRD and TEM. The performances of electrochemical intercalation and deintercalation of lithium ions have been studied by using cyclic voltammograms and galvanostatic charge discharge techniques. The results show that the nano materials posses advantage of micro structure and Li+ ions intercalation performances. The observed high capacity and large charge discharge current density of the nano phase materials seem to have resulted from three kinds of effects: 1) an increase in the space for Li+ ions intercalation; 2) a decrease in the …

Design, Performance, And Applications Of A Coherent Ultra-Wideband Random Noise Radar, Ram M. Narayanan, Yi Xu, Paul D. Hoffmeyer, John O. Curtis Feb 1998

Design, Performance, And Applications Of A Coherent Ultra-Wideband Random Noise Radar, Ram M. Narayanan, Yi Xu, Paul D. Hoffmeyer, John O. Curtis

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

A novel coherent ultra-wideband radar system operating in the 1- to 2-GHz frequency range has been developed recently at the University of Nebraska. The radar system transmits white Gaussian noise. Detection and localization of buried objects is accomplished by correlating the reflected waveform with a time-delayed replica of the transmitted waveform. Broadband dual-polarized log-periodic antennas are used for transmission and reception. A unique signal-processing scheme is used to inject coherence into the system by frequency translation of the ultrawideband signal by a coherent 160-MHz phase-locked source prior to performing heterodyne correlation. The system coherence allows the extraction of a target’s …

Worst-Case Error Probability Of A Spread-Spectrum System In Energy-Limited Interference, Murad Hizlan, Brian L. Hughes Feb 1998

Worst-Case Error Probability Of A Spread-Spectrum System In Energy-Limited Interference, Murad Hizlan, Brian L. Hughes

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We consider a communication channel corrupted by thermal noise and by an unknown and arbitrary interference of bounded energy. For this channel, we derive a simple upper bound to the worst-case error probability suffered by a direct sequence (DS) communication system with error-correction coding, pseudorandom interleaving, and a correlation receiver. This bound is exponentially tight as the block length of the error correcting code becomes large. Numerical examples are given that illustrate the dependence of the bound on the choice of error correcting code, the type of interleaving used, and the relative energy of the Gaussian noise and arbitrary interference

Neural Network Based Optimizing Controllers For Smart Structural Systems, Rajendra Damle, Vittal S. Rao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Neural network-based controllers for vibration suppression of smart structural systems have been reported in several recent studies. These studies have shown that in addition to conventional controller design methodologies, neural networks offer an effective basis for design and implementation of controllers. With the introduction of neural network chips like the electronically trainable analog neural network (ETANN) chip i80170NX by Intel and the Ni1000 chip by Nestor Corp., stand-alone hardware implementation of neural network-based controllers is possible. In this paper the capabilities of Intel's ETANN chip to implement linear and nonlinear controllers for smart structural systems have been investigated. A neural …

Performance Analysis Of The Interference Adaptation Dynamic Channel Allocation Technique In Wireless Communication Networks, Ziqiang Xu Jan 1998

Performance Analysis Of The Interference Adaptation Dynamic Channel Allocation Technique In Wireless Communication Networks, Ziqiang Xu

Dissertations

Dynamic channel allocation (DCA) problem is one of the major research topics in the wireless networking area. The purpose of this technique is to relieve the contradiction between the increasing traffic load in wireless networks and the limited bandwidth resource across the air interface. The challenge of this problem comes from the following facts: a) even the basic DCA problem is shown to be NP-complete (none polynomial complete); b) the size of the state space of the problem is very large; and c) any practical DCA algorithm should run in real-time.

Many heuristic DCA schemes have been proposed in the …

Enhanced Terahertz Pulse Generation And Detection Using Electric Field Singularities In Photo-Conducting Antennas, Yi Cai

Dissertations

In recent years, generation of ultra-short electromagnetic pulses with frequency components in the terahertz (THz) range has been achieved by various techniques. Among those different methods, photo-conducting antennas have proven to be the most efficient source of THz radiation. THz spectrometers utilizing such photo-conducting antennas as transmitters and receivers are meanwhile routinely used for spectroscopic studies in the frequency regime between 0.1 to 5THz, which can be covered by neither conventional optical nor microwave spectrometers. However, THz emission power from the existing photo-conducting antenna is not sufficient for many applications (such as electro-optic sampling for real time THz detection and …

Design And Characterization Of Ultra High Frame Rate Burst Image Sensors, Rakesh K. Kabra Jan 1998

Design And Characterization Of Ultra High Frame Rate Burst Image Sensors, Rakesh K. Kabra

Dissertations

This thesis research was aimed at investigating and designing novel architectures required for ultra high frame rate (UHFR) imagers capable of operating at frame rates in excess of 106 frames/sec. To demonstrate the feasibility of these architectures, a 180 x 180 element UHFR-I imager was designed and fabricated. The imager chip stored the latest 32 frames at its on-chip memory locations rather than performing a continuous readout. It was demonstrated that this architecture approach could achieve a frame acquisition rate of 2 x 106 frames/sec. Additionally, other novel design features were incorporated to minimize optical cross talk and …

Input Shaping is successfully applied to the …

A Design-For Retirement Rating Model For Environmentally Conscious Products, Xin He Jan 1998

A Design-For Retirement Rating Model For Environmentally Conscious Products, Xin He

Theses

Design-For-Retirement is a concept that allows one to design a product such that its retirement time and post-life treatment are optimized to lead to the minimum environmental impact and maximum financial gain. Retired product parts or subassemblies face three primary multi-lifecycle engineering treatments. The first one is to recondition them for reuse in the next lifecycle. The second one is to convert their post life parts into a material form for recycling back into new parts. The last is to dump or landfill them. Each option has a significantly different environmental cost-benefit ratio. Another important concern is the dismantling process …

Crosstalk In Passive Matrix Polymer Led Displays, David Braun Jan 1998

Crosstalk In Passive Matrix Polymer Led Displays, David Braun

Electrical Engineering

Passive matrix displays based on polymer and organic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) suffer from crosstalk, the emission of light from pixels other than those selected. This article explores the topic of crosstalk both with an approximate but analytic model and by means of more exact circuit simulation in order to explain the causes of crosstalk and to quantify the consequences. We conclude that crosstalk has implications for display power consumption.

Piezoelectric Effects On The Optical Properties Of Gan/Alxga1−Xn Multiple Quantum Wells, H. S. Kim, J. Y. Lin, H. X. Jiang, W. W. Chow, A. Botchkarev, Hadis Morkoç Jan 1998

Piezoelectric Effects On The Optical Properties Of Gan/Alxga1−Xn Multiple Quantum Wells, H. S. Kim, J. Y. Lin, H. X. Jiang, W. W. Chow, A. Botchkarev, Hadis Morkoç

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Piezoelectric effects on the optical properties of GaN/AlGaN multiple quantum wells(MQWs) have been investigated by picosecond time-resolvedphotoluminescence(PL)measurements. For MQWs with well thicknesses 30 and 40 Å, the excitonic transition peak positions at 10 K in continuous wave (cw) spectra are redshifted with respect to the GaN epilayer by 13 and 45 meV, respectively. The time-resolvedPL spectra of the 30 and 40 Å well MQWs reveal that the excitonic transition is in fact blueshifted at early delay times due to quantum confinement of carriers. The spectral peak position shifts toward lower energies as the delay time increases and becomes redshifted at …

Deep Centers In N-Gan Grown By Reactive Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Z.-Q. Fang, D. C. Look, W. Kim, Z. Fan, A. Botchkarev, Hadis Morkoç

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Deep centers in Si-doped n-GaN layers grown by reactive molecular beam epitaxy have been studied by deep-level transient spectroscopy as a function of growth conditions. Si-doped GaN samples grown on a Si-doped n+-GaN contact layer at 800 °C show a dominant trap C1 with activation energyET=0.44 eV and capture cross-section σT=1.3×10−15 cm−2, while samples grown at 750 °C on an undoped semi-insulating GaN buffer show prominent traps D1and E1, with ET=0.20 eV and σT=8.4×10−17 cm2, and ET=0.21 eV and σT=1.6×10−14 cm2, respectively. Trap E1 is believed to be related to a N-vacancy defect, since the Arrhenius signature for E1 is …

Plasma Heating In Highly Excited Gan/Algan Multiple Quantum Wells, K. C. Zeng, R. Mair, J. Y. Lin, H. X. Jiang, W. W. Chow, A. Botchkarev, Hadis Morkoç Jan 1998

Plasma Heating In Highly Excited Gan/Algan Multiple Quantum Wells, K. C. Zeng, R. Mair, J. Y. Lin, H. X. Jiang, W. W. Chow, A. Botchkarev, Hadis Morkoç

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Time-resolvedphotoluminescence(PL)spectroscopy was used to investigate carrier distributions in a GaN/AlGaN multiple quantum well(MQW) sample under high excitation intensities necessary to achieve lasing threshold. Room temperaturePL spectra showed optical transitions involving both confined and unconfined states in the quantum well structure. Analysis of the experimental results using a microscopic theory, indicates that at high excitation the carrier distributions are characterized by plasma temperatures which are significantly higher than the lattice temperature. The implications of our findings on GaN MQW laser design are also discussed.

Deep Level Defects In N-Type Gan Grown By Molecular Beam Epitaxy, C. D. Wang, L. S. Yu, S. S. Lau, E. T. Yu, W. Kim, A. E. Botchkarev, Hadis Morkoç Jan 1998

Deep Level Defects In N-Type Gan Grown By Molecular Beam Epitaxy, C. D. Wang, L. S. Yu, S. S. Lau, E. T. Yu, W. Kim, A. E. Botchkarev, Hadis Morkoç

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Deep-level transient spectroscopy has been used to characterize electronic defects in n-type GaN grown by reactive molecular-beam epitaxy. Five deep-level electronic defects were observed, with activation energiesE1=0.234±0.006, E2=0.578±0.006, E3=0.657±0.031, E4=0.961±0.026, and E5=0.240±0.012 eV. Among these, the levels labeled E1, E2, and E3are interpreted as corresponding to deep levels previously reported in n-GaN grown by both hydride vapor-phase epitaxy and metal organic chemical vapor deposition. Levels E4 and E5do not correspond to any previously reported defect levels, and are characterized for the first time in our studies.

Optical resonance modes have been observed in optically pumped microdisk cavitiesfabricated from 50 Å/50 Å GaN/AlxGa1−xN(x∼0.07) and 45 Å/45 Å InxGa1−xN/GaN(x∼0.15)multiple quantum well structures. Microdisks, approximately 9 μm in diameter and regularly spaced every 50 μm, were formed by an ion beametch process. Individual disks were pumped at 300 and 10 K with 290 nm laser pulses focused to a spot size much smaller than the disk diameter. Optical modes corresponding to (i) the radial mode type with a spacing of 49–51 meV (both TE and TM) and (ii) the Whispering Gallery mode with a spacing of 15–16 meV were …

Effect Of Ammonia Flow Rate On Impurity Incorporation And Material Properties Of Si-Doped Gan Epitaxial Films Grown By Reactive Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Wook Kim, A. E. Botchkarev, H. Morkoç, Z.-Q. Fang, D. C. Look, David J. Smith Jan 1998

Effect Of Ammonia Flow Rate On Impurity Incorporation And Material Properties Of Si-Doped Gan Epitaxial Films Grown By Reactive Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Wook Kim, A. E. Botchkarev, H. Morkoç, Z.-Q. Fang, D. C. Look, David J. Smith

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Effect of ammonia flow rate on the impurity incorporation and material properties of Si-doped GaN films grown by reactive molecular beam epitaxy (RMBE) process is discussed. It appears that the ammonia flow rate has a marginal effect on the incorporation of impurities into the Si-doped GaN films except there was a little decrease in O and Si with increasing ammonia flow rate when the Si concentration in the film is higher than 1018 cm−3. Electron Hall mobility of Si-doped GaN films grown by RMBE varies with ammonia flow rate used during film growth. From deep level transient spectroscopy(DLTS) measurements for …

On Block-Coded Modulation Using Unequal Error Protection Codes Over Rayleigh-Fading Channels, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Tadao Kasami, Shu Lin, Hideki Imai

Faculty Publications

This paper considers block-coded 8-phase-shift-keying (PSK) modulations for the unequal error protection (UEP) of information transmitted over Rayleigh-fading channels. Both conventional linear block codes and linear UEP (LUEP) codes are combined with a naturally labeled 8-PSK signal set, using the multilevel construction of Imai and Hirakawa (1977). Computer simulation results are presented showing that, over Rayleigh-fading channels, it is possible to improve the coding gain for the most significant bits with the use of binary LUEP codes as constituent codes, in comparison with using conventional binary linear codes alone.

A sample system investigation system, such as an ellipsometer or polarimeter system, for use in investigating sample systems with electromagnetic wavelengths in the infrared range, and a calibration method for compensating nonidealities in multi-dimensional system rotated and non-rotated component representing matricies, are disclosed. An essentially achromatic compensator of dual-rhomb construction, which introduces a (3*LAMBDA/4) phase shift, but essentially no deviation in the direction of propagation of a polarized beam of electromagnetic wavelengths caused to pass there through, even when said compensator is caused to continuously rotate, is also disclosed.

High-Resolution Image Reconstruction From A Sequence Of Rotated And Translated Frames And Its Application To An Infrared Imaging System, Russell C. Hardie, Kenneth J. Barnard, John G. Bognar, Ernest E. Armstrong, Edward A. Watson Jan 1998

High-Resolution Image Reconstruction From A Sequence Of Rotated And Translated Frames And Its Application To An Infrared Imaging System, Russell C. Hardie, Kenneth J. Barnard, John G. Bognar, Ernest E. Armstrong, Edward A. Watson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Some imaging systems employ detector arrays that are not sufficiently dense to meet the Nyquist criterion during image acquisition. This is particularly true for many staring infrared imagers. Thus, the full resolution afforded by the optics is not being realized in such a system. This paper presents a technique for estimating a high-resolution image, with reduced aliasing, from a sequence of undersampled rotated and translationally shifted frames. Such an image sequence can be obtained if an imager is mounted on a moving platform, such as an aircraft. Several approaches to this type of problem have been proposed in the literature. …

Numerical, Image, And Signal Processing Algorithms Applied To Radar Rainfall Estimation, John Eugene Lane Jan 1998

Numerical, Image, And Signal Processing Algorithms Applied To Radar Rainfall Estimation, John Eugene Lane

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Since the advent of radar in the 1940s, it has been well known that water drops composing precipitation scatter microwaves in a predictable manner. This characteristic of early. radar has lead to the present day Weather Surveillance Radar (WSR-88D) or NEXRAD systems, operated by the National Weather Service (NWS). In parallel to the evolution of weather radar for measuring precipitation over large areas, remote networks of rain gauges have been deployed and managed by agencies such as the Florida Water Management Districts. Since the recent deployment of the NWS network of WSR-88D, as well as the recent launch of the …
