Simulating Quasi-Ballistic Transport In Si Nanotransistors, Kausar Banoo, Jung-Hoon Rhew, Mark S. Lundstrom, Chi-Wang Shu, Joseph W. Jerome Jan 2001

Simulating Quasi-Ballistic Transport In Si Nanotransistors, Kausar Banoo, Jung-Hoon Rhew, Mark S. Lundstrom, Chi-Wang Shu, Joseph W. Jerome

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Electron transport in model Si nanotransistors is examined by numerical simulation using a hierarchy of simulation methods, from full Boltzmann, to hydrodynamic, energy transport, and drift-diffusion. The on-current of a MOSFET is shown to be limited by transport across a low-field region about one mean-free-path long and located at the beginning of the channel. Commonly used transport models based on simplified solutions of the Boltzmann equation are shown to fail under such conditions. The cause for this failure is related to the neglect of the carriers' drift energy and to the collision-dominated assumptions typically used in the development of simplified …

Uniform Random Number Generation Using Pseudorandom Binary Sequences, Susan Rea Jan 2001

Uniform Random Number Generation Using Pseudorandom Binary Sequences, Susan Rea

Theses

Random numbers have conventionally been used in a range of applications such as numerical analysis, lotteries and computer simulation and as cryptographic keys. The algorithms used for the production of random numbers are termed pseudorandom, as the numbers produced are not truly random as they emanate from a deterministic periodic source that is they are predictable if a subset of the sequence is known. However, for most applications these pseudorandom number sources are entirely suitable.

For cryptographic key sources, however, the random number sequences must be statistically good and difficult to predict. Linear feedback shift registers are presented in this …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Random noise polarimetry is a new radar technique for high-resolution probing of subsurface objects and interfaces. The University of Nebraska has developed a polarimetric random noise radar system based on the heterodyne correlation technique. Simulation studies and performance tests on the system confirm its ability to respond to phase differences in the received signals. In addition to polarimetric processing capability and the simplified system design, random noise radar also possesses other desirable features, such as immunity from radio frequency interference (RFI). The paper discusses the theoretical foundations of random noise polarimetry, and presents examples out of the entire data set …

Multimode Quantitative Scanning Microwave Microscopy Of In Situ Grown Epitaxial Ba1-XSrXTio3 Composition Spreads, K. S. Chang, M. Aronova, O. Famodu, I. Takeuchi, S. E. Lofland, Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers, H. Chang

Faculty Publications

We have performed variable-temperature multimode quantitative microwavemicroscopy of in situepitaxial Ba1−xSrxTiO3 thin-film composition spreads fabricated on (100) LaA1O3 substrates. Dielectric properties were mapped as a function of continuously varying composition from BaTiO3 to SrTiO3. We have demonstrated nondestructive temperature-dependent dielectric characterization of local thin-film regions. Measurements are simultaneously taken at multiple resonant frequencies of the microscope cavity. The multimode measurements allow frequency dispersion studies. We observe strong composition-dependent dielectric relaxation in Ba1−xSrxTiO3 at microwave frequencies.

Modeling, Fabrication, And Optimization Of Niobium Cavities: Phase I, Robert A. Schill Jr., Mohamed Trabia

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

Niobium cavities are important parts of the integrated NC/SC high-power linacs. Over the years, researchers in several countries have tested various cavity shapes. They concluded that elliptically shaped cells and buffered chemical polishing produce good performance. The objective of the proposed research is to maximize the performance of the niobium cavities through studying multipacting, studying the effect of chemical etching on the surface roughness, and redesigning the cavities.

The US Congress has recently authorized exploring an alternative way to deal with spent nuclear fuel: Accelerator Transmuting of Waste (ATW). In this approach, a particle accelerator produces protons that react with …

Accurate Parameter Estimation For An Articulatory Speech Synthesizer With An Improved Neural Network Mapping, Hali̇s Altun, Tankut Yalçinöz, K. Mervyn Curtis Jan 2001

Accurate Parameter Estimation For An Articulatory Speech Synthesizer With An Improved Neural Network Mapping, Hali̇s Altun, Tankut Yalçinöz, K. Mervyn Curtis

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Neural network (NN) applications have recently been employed to extract the parameters of an articulatory speech synthesizer from a given speech signal. Results from these attempts showed that a single NN is insufficient to cover all of the possible configurations uniquely. Moreover, apart from their computational advantages, NN mapping is so far not superior to the other mapping techniques [1]. Thus there is a clear need to improve NN solution to the inverse problem. Results from our earlier experiments with an articulatory speech synthesizer have shown that the statistical characteristic of the articulatory target pattern vectors can be exploited for …

Scalar Wave Diffraction By A Perfectly Soft Infinitely Thin Circular Ring, Fati̇h Di̇kmen, Ertuğrul Karaçuha, Yury Alexanderovich Tuchkin Jan 2001

Scalar Wave Diffraction By A Perfectly Soft Infinitely Thin Circular Ring, Fati̇h Di̇kmen, Ertuğrul Karaçuha, Yury Alexanderovich Tuchkin

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A new strong mathematically rigorous and numerically effective method for solving the boundary value problem of scalar (for example acoustic) wave diffraction by a perfectly soft (Dirichlet boundary condition) infinitely thin circular ring is proposed. The method is based on the combination of the Orthogonal Polynomials Approach, and on the ideas of the methods of analytical regularization. As a result of the suggested regularization procedure, the initial boundary value problem is equivalently reduced to the infinite system of the linear algebraic equations of the second kind, i.e., to an equation of the type ( (I + H) x = b …

Regularity And Symmetry As A Base For Efficient Realization Of Reversible Logic Circuits, Marek Perkowski, Pawel Kerntopf, Andrzej Buller, Malgorzata Chrzanowska-Jeske, Alan Mishchenko, Xiaoyu Song, Anas Al-Rabadi, Lech Jozwiak, Alan Coppola Jan 2001

Regularity And Symmetry As A Base For Efficient Realization Of Reversible Logic Circuits, Marek Perkowski, Pawel Kerntopf, Andrzej Buller, Malgorzata Chrzanowska-Jeske, Alan Mishchenko, Xiaoyu Song, Anas Al-Rabadi, Lech Jozwiak, Alan Coppola

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

We introduce a Reversible Programmable Gate Array (RPGA) based on regular structure to realize binary functions in reversible logic. This structure, called a 2 * 2 Net Structure, allows for more efficient realization of symmetric functions than the methods shown by previous authors. In addition, it realizes many non-symmetric functions even without variable repetition. Our synthesis method to RPGAs allows to realize arbitrary symmetric function in a completely regular structure of reversible gates with smaller “garbage” than the previously presented papers. Because every Boolean function is symmetrizable by repeating input variables, our method is applicable to arbitrary multi-input, multi-output Boolean …

Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation Using Neural-Fuzzy In Atm Network, Yan Sing Chua Jan 2001

Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation Using Neural-Fuzzy In Atm Network, Yan Sing Chua

Student Works (2000-2009)

Dynamic bandwidth allocation is becoming one of the crucial issues in the design and research in the computer network. This is due to the continuous increasing demand of intensive applications that require more bandwidth while retaining higher quality. Dynamic bandwidth allocation utilises the current network state information to optimise the bandwidth distribution. The state information can be gathered through prediction using past data and measurement on current state. Agility and flexibility of dynamic bandwidth allocation using Neural-Fuzzy has the advantage that it can adapt to the state changes of the network. ATM network carries heterogeneous traffic and this causes the …

This analysis will lead us to a better understanding of their behaviour, that is a crucial point in the selection of each topology for a particular application. Moreover, the dynamic response of each converter is different; …

An Efficient Instruction Cache Scheme For Object-Oriented Languages, Yul Chu, M. R. Ito Jan 2001

An Efficient Instruction Cache Scheme For Object-Oriented Languages, Yul Chu, M. R. Ito

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present an efficient cache scheme, which can considerably reduce instruction cache misses caused by procedure call/returns. This scheme employs N-way banks and XOR mapping functions. The main function of this scheme is to place a group of instructions separated by a call instruction into a bank according to the initial and final bank selection mechanisms. After the initial bank selection mechanism selects a bank on an instruction cache miss, the final bank selection mechanism will determine the final bank for updating a cache line as a correction mechanism. These two mechanisms can guarantee that recent groups of instructions exist …

Power Quality, Badrul H. Chowdhury

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

One big reason for the poor power quality incidents experienced today is the proliferation of electronic devices. A voracious appetite for higher efficiency and productivity in the manufacturing sector, comfort and automation in homes, and efficient lighting systems in commercial installations are driving the market for power electronic devices. At the forefront of this explosion is the switched power supply. Compared to its predecessor-the linear power supply-it can convert higher power much more efficiently and with a significantly smaller footprint. The switched power supply is found in most of today''s computers, fax machines, laser printers, office copiers, etc.

Analysis Of A Four-Level Dc/Dc Buck Converter, Keith Corzine, J. Yuen, J. R. Baker

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a four-level DC/DC buck converter is introduced. The primary application for this converter is to regulate the center capacitor voltage in a four-level inverter system. The steady-state and average-value models for the proposed converter are developed and compared in simulation. The converter was constructed in the laboratory and verified on a four-level motor drive system. It was shown that the four-level DC/DC converter provides capacitor voltage balancing and allows higher output voltage utilization from the inverter.

Impact-Ionization And Noise Characteristics Of Thin Iii-V Avalanche Photodiodes, Mohammad A. Saleh, Majeed M. Hayat, Paul P. Sotirelis, Archie L. Holmes, Joe C. Campbell, Bahaa E.A. Saleh, Malvin Carl Teich

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

It is, by now, well known that McIntyre's localized carrier-multiplication theory cannot explain the suppression of excess noise factor observed in avalanche photodiodes (APDs) that make use of thin multiplication regions. We demonstrate that a carrier multiplication model that incorporates the effects of dead space, as developed earlier by Hayat et al. provides excellent agreement with the impact-ionization and noise characteristics of thin InP, In/sub 0.52/Al/sub 0.48/As, GaAs, and Al/sub 0.2/Ga/sub 0.8/As APDs, with multiplication regions of different widths. We outline a general technique that facilitates the calculation of ionization coefficients for carriers that have traveled a distance exceeding the …

Breakdown Voltage In Thin Iii-V Avalanche Photodiodes, Mohammad A. Saleh Jan 2001

Breakdown Voltage In Thin Iii-V Avalanche Photodiodes, Mohammad A. Saleh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

  1. The dead-space multiplication theory of Hayat et al. [Journal of Lightwave Technology 10, 1415 (1992)], in conjunction with the multiplication-width-independent ionization-coefficient model developed by Saleh et al. [IEEE Trans. Electron Devices 47, 625 (2000)], are shown to accurately predict breakdown voltages for thin avalanche photodiodes of GaAs, InP, In0:52Al0:48As, and Al0:2Ga0:8As, over a broad range of device widths. The breakdown voltage is determined from the analytical expression for the impulse-response-function decay rate.
