Reinforcement Learning-Based Constrained Optimal Control Of Strict-Feedback Nonlinear Systems: Application To Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, Behzad Farzanegan, S. Jagannathan Jan 2024

Reinforcement Learning-Based Constrained Optimal Control Of Strict-Feedback Nonlinear Systems: Application To Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, Behzad Farzanegan, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper addresses a constrained neural network (NN)-based optimal tracking scheme for a class of uncertain nonlinear discrete-time systems in strict-feedback form by using a control barrier function (CBF). First, a modified barrier-type cost function is introduced for each subsystem, guiding the actual system trajectory toward the safe set or desired trajectory while avoiding unwanted sets. To address the tracking problem, an augmented system is employed to convert the time-varying optimal tracking to a time-invariant optimal regulation. Then, an actor-critic framework is employed with the backstepping technique to obtain both virtual and actual optimal control policies for each subsystem to …

Effect Of Signal Modulation On Active Microwave Thermography, Logan M. Wilcox, Mathias Bonmarin, Kristen M. Donnell Jan 2024

Effect Of Signal Modulation On Active Microwave Thermography, Logan M. Wilcox, Mathias Bonmarin, Kristen M. Donnell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Active microwave thermography (AMT) is a coupled electromagnetic and thermographic nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) technique. AMT utilizes an active electromagnetic source to induce heat on or within a specimen under test (SUT) with subsequential infrared measurements via an infrared camera. AMT has been successfully employed in multiple fields, including aerospace, space, and infrastructure, among others. Generally, for AMT, the excitation (electromagnetic source) is applied over a specified period of time (referred to as the heating time). If inspection continues for additional time after the excitation is removed (turned off), this period is referred to as the cooling time. This …

Visualization Of Noise Coupling Paths Based On The Reciprocity Theorem, Seungtaek Jeong, Jong Hwa Kwon, Deepak Pai, Jagan Rajagopalan, Chulsoon Hwang Jan 2024

Visualization Of Noise Coupling Paths Based On The Reciprocity Theorem, Seungtaek Jeong, Jong Hwa Kwon, Deepak Pai, Jagan Rajagopalan, Chulsoon Hwang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this article, visualization of noise coupling paths is proposed and verified. The coupling coefficient (CC) is derived based on the Reciprocity theorem and time-average coupled power, which represents the contribution of each spatial point to the coupled power. The physical meaning of CC is demonstrated by relating the integrations of CC in a volume space occupied by absorbers to the coupled power being suppressed by the absorbers. The proposed method is applied to a practical device and the identified dominant coupling paths are experimentally verified.

Real-Time Occupancy-Based Control Of Hvac Systems In Office Buildings Considering Energy Saving And Thermal Comfort, Emmanuel Agabi

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Traditional heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) control systems often waste energy and fail to maintain thermal comfort due to their reliance on static setpoints, manual on/off control, and limited responsiveness to occupancy and weather conditions. With advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT), integrating occupancy data into building energy management systems, including HVAC systems, has progressed beyond conventional sensor-based approaches. This thesis addresses the inefficiency of traditional control of HVAC systems by proposing two strategies for a single-zone office building. The first one is occupancy-based control (OBC), and the second is data-driven supervisory model predictive control (SMPC). By leveraging …

Enhancing Energy Efficiency In Kubernetes Cluster Through Energy-Aware Resource Scheduling By Node Labeling Assignment, Soundharya Moorthi

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

As the demand for cloud-native infrastructure grows, managing energy becomes increasingly essential for small-scale and large-scale Kubernetes clusters. This research introduces two scheduling strategies to enhance energy usage in Kubernetes clusters: the energy-aware resource scheduler and the adaptive energy-aware resource scheduler. Both approaches aim to reduce energy consumption by dynamically managing node states and workload assignments based on resource utilization. Both schedulers are implemented as extenders on top of the default Kubernetes scheduler. A comparative evaluation against the default Kubernetes scheduler and the bin packing scheduler, using power and energy utilization metrics, demonstrates that while the energy-aware scheduler achieves notable …

Contextual Matching And Aggregation Network For Mri Image Super-Resolution, Abdulhamid Muhammad

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

High-resolution (HR) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides detailed visualization of healthy and pathological tissues, making it a vital tool for accurate diagnosis, and enhancing physicians’ ability to detect lesions with better precision. However, obtaining HR MRI images in practice is often challenging due to hardware limitations, extended scan durations, and patient discomfort. Super-resolution (SR) techniques have been developed to recover HR image from LR image. However, capturing and integrating local and global features remains a significant challenge, as many approaches inadequately model the complex contextual correlations across multiple scales thereby degrading reconstruction quality. To address these limitations, we propose an …

A High-Gain Wideband Antenna Employing Novel Partial Reflective Surfaces, Mia Maria Ulfah

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

In this dissertation, different partially reflective surfaces (PRS) are investigated to improve the gain and bandwidth of a Fabry–Perot cavity (FPC) antenna for wireless local-area network (WLAN) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication applications. Each of the proposed PRSs has the phase of a reflection coefficient that increases with frequency. This property of the PRS is required for a broadband characteristic of the FPC antenna, which is desirable for the intended applications. A U-shaped microstrip patch antenna (MPA) with a parasitic rectangular patch is used as a feed antenna. It is designed for operation in the WLAN and V2V frequency bands. The …

An Attention-Guided Image Super-Resolution For Scene Text, Tithnorakneath Em Jan 2024

An Attention-Guided Image Super-Resolution For Scene Text, Tithnorakneath Em

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Scene Text Image Super-Resolution (STISR) is crucial in enhancing text recognition for low-resolution images, often degraded due to environmental and device limitations. While many existing STISR approaches leverage super-resolution techniques to refine image quality, they frequently need specialized mechanisms to extract text-specific features. Most existing methods were based on feature extraction methods that missed critical details, such as edges and text-background contrasts, that are usually important for recognition. In this work, we propose a new feature extraction method that uses Channel Attention and Spatial Attention mechanisms to emphasize features related to text, namely edges, contours, and spatial alignment. We add …

In nano/microelectronics, manufacturing smooth solder coatings free of defects such as voids and cracks, which can compromise joint reliability is crucial. Magnetron sputtering offers a high degree of control over film thickness and composition, resulting in films with excellent uniformity and adhesion. Despite these advantages, fabricating continuous and robust SAC305 films using magnetron sputtering remains a difficult task with limited research …

External Direct Sum Invariant Subspace And Decomposition Of Coupled Differential-Difference Equations, Keqin Gu, Huan Phan-Van Jan 2024

External Direct Sum Invariant Subspace And Decomposition Of Coupled Differential-Difference Equations, Keqin Gu, Huan Phan-Van

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This article discusses the invariant subspaces that are restricted to be external direct sums. Some existence conditions are presented that facilitate finding such invariant subspaces. This problem is related to the decomposition of coupled differential-difference equations, leading to the possibility of lowering the dimensions of coupled differential-difference equations. As has been well documented, lowering the dimension of coupled differential-difference equations can drastically reduce the computational time needed in stability analysis when a complete quadratic Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional is used. Most known ad hoc methods of reducing the order are special cases of this formulation.

Structured Invariant Subspace And Decomposition Of Systems With Time Delays And Uncertainties, Huan Phan-Van, Keqin Gu

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This article discusses invariant subspaces of a matrix with a given partition structure. The existence of a nontrivial structured invariant subspace is equivalent to the possibility of decomposing the associated system with multiple feedback blocks such that the feedback operators are subject to a given constraint. The formulation is especially useful in the stability analysis of time-delay systems using the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional approach where computational efficiency is essential in order to achieve accuracy for large scale systems. The set of all structured invariant subspaces are obtained (thus all possible decompositions are obtained as a result) for the coupled differential-difference equations …

Accurate numerical solution of parabolic and elliptic partial differential equations governing two-dimensional heat transfer is critical for engineering simulations but computationally challenging. This work employs key numerical techniques finite differences, conjugate gradients, and Crank-Nicolson time stepping to solve the heat diffusion equation and analyze method performance. The Poisson equation is discretized using second-order central finite differences and solved with the conjugate gradient approach to determine the steady state solution. The transient heat equation is integrated in time via the Crank-Nicolson implicit scheme, also utilizing conjugate gradients. The methods effectively compute solutions matching analytical and boundary conditions. Convergence and stability are …

Statistical Eye Diagrams For High-Speed Interconnects Of Packages: A Review, Junyong Park, Donghyun Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An eye diagram, a critical metric in signal integrity analysis for high-speed interconnects such as packages, interposer, and printed circuit boards (PCBs), is generated by superposition of the received waveform. Obtaining an eye diagram is time-consuming, thus signal integrity analysis is inefficient. This article reviews that have been proposed to overcome this limitation. The statistical eye diagram provides a probability distribution depending on a sampling time and voltage, therefore it can be expanded to other metrics, such as the bit-error rate and shmoo plot. This article introduces previous research on statistical eye diagrams applied to complementary metal-oxide-semiconductors (CMOSs), noise, and …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A method for predicting the eye diagram for a controller area network with a flexible data rate (CAN FD) is proposed in this article. A CAN FD changes a data rate according to the status to overcome the limitation of latency. In other words, when data to be transmitted are accumulated, the CAN FD increases the data rate up to 5 Mb/s. The CAN FD has a bus topology consisting of multiple electronic control units, which results in a significant amount of signal reflection. Thus, the above causes the signal integrity analysis uncertain. To avoid this, this article proposes a …

An Equivalent Coil Model Of A Wireless Power Transfer System Including Eddy Loss, Hanyu Zhang, Daryl G. Beetner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A wireless power transfer (WPT) system suffers from eddy loss if a conductive object is placed near the coupling coil. In this paper, a 3-coil equivalent circuit model for the coupling coil in a WPT system is proposed for analyzing the eddy loss due to nearby conductors. This model uses a third coil with inductive coupling to the original transmitting and receiving coils to model the eddy loss. The proposed model was validated by comparing the Z-parameters with a full-wave simulation and showing good correlation over the frequency of interest, where the traditional 2-coil model fails. The 3-coil model is …
