Assessing The Quality Of Seawinds Rain Measurements, David G. Long, David W. Draper Jul 2004

Assessing The Quality Of Seawinds Rain Measurements, David G. Long, David W. Draper

Faculty Publications

While SeaWinds was designed to measure ocean winds, it can also measure rain over the ocean. SeaWinds on QuikSCAT active measurements of integrated columnar rain rate obtained via simultaneous wind/rain retrieval are evaluated via Monte Carlo simulation and the Cramer-Rao lower bound on estimate accuracy. Although sufficiently accurate in many conditions, the simultaneous wind/rain retrieval method used with SeaWinds on QuikSCAT data is ill-conditioned for certain wind directions and measurement geometries, sometimes yielding spurious rain rates in zero-rain conditions. To assess the validity of SeaWinds-derived rain rates, a simple empirically based rain thresholding scheme is presented, derived from simulated data. …

Automatic Detection And Validity Of The Sea-Ice Edge: An Application Of Enhanced-Resolution Quikscat/Seawinds Data, David G. Long, Jorg Haarpaintner, Rasmus T. Tonboe, Michael L. Van Woert Jul 2004

Automatic Detection And Validity Of The Sea-Ice Edge: An Application Of Enhanced-Resolution Quikscat/Seawinds Data, David G. Long, Jorg Haarpaintner, Rasmus T. Tonboe, Michael L. Van Woert

Faculty Publications

Sea-ice edge detection is an essential task at the different national ice services to secure navigation in ice-covered seas. Comparison between the Remund and Long ice mask image from enhanced-resolution QuikScat/SeaWinds (QS) products and the analyzed ice edge from high-resolution RADARSAT synthetic aperture radar has shown that the automatically determined QS ice mask underestimates the Arctic ice extent. QS data was statistically analyzed by colocating the data with ice charts around Greenland and with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Team's Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) ice concentration algorithm over the whole Arctic region. All variables, i.e., the backscatter in vertical …

Mutual Coupling In Mimo Wireless Systems: A Rigorous Network Theory Analysis, Michael A. Jensen, Jon W. Wallace Jul 2004

Mutual Coupling In Mimo Wireless Systems: A Rigorous Network Theory Analysis, Michael A. Jensen, Jon W. Wallace

Faculty Publications

A new framework for the analysis of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems is introduced to account for mutual coupling effects in the antenna arrays. The multiport interactions at transmit and receive are characterized by representing the channel using a scattering parameter matrix. A new power constraint that limits the average radiated power is also introduced. The capacity of the MIMO system with mutual coupling is defined as the maximum mutual information of the transmit and receive vectors over all possible transmit signaling and receive loading. Full-wave electromagnetic antenna simulations combined with a simple path-based channel model are used to demonstrate …

Simultaneous Wind And Rain Retrieval Using Seawinds Data, David G. Long, David W. Draper Jul 2004

Simultaneous Wind And Rain Retrieval Using Seawinds Data, David G. Long, David W. Draper

Faculty Publications

The SeaWinds scatterometers onboard the QuikSCAT and the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite 2 measure ocean winds on a global scale via the relationship between the normalized radar backscattering cross section of the ocean and the vector wind. The current wind retrieval method ignores scattering and attenuation of ocean rain, which alter backscatter measurements and corrupt retrieved winds. Using a simple rain backscatter and attenuation model, two methods of improving wind estimation in the presence of rain are evaluated. First, if no suitable prior knowledge of the rain rate is available, a maximum-likelihood estimation technique is used to simultaneously retrieve the …

Estimation Of Heart-Surface Potentials Using Regularized Multipole Sources, Daryl G. Beetner, R. Martin Arthur Jul 2004

Estimation Of Heart-Surface Potentials Using Regularized Multipole Sources, Daryl G. Beetner, R. Martin Arthur

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Direct inference of heart-surface potentials from body-surface potentials has been the goal of most recent work on electrocardiographic inverse solutions. We developed and tested indirect methods for inferring heart-surface potentials based on estimation of regularized multipole sources. Regularization was done using Tikhonov, constrained-least-squares, and multipole-truncation techniques. These multipole-equivalent methods (MEMs) were compared to the conventional mixed boundary-value method (BVM) in a realistic torso model with up to 20% noise added to body-surface potentials and ±1 cm error in heart position and size. Optimal regularization was used for all inverse solutions. The relative error of inferred heart-surface potentials of the MEM …

Real-Time Measurements On The Effects Of Ultra-Short High Voltage Pulses On Hl-60 Cells, Michalis C. Artemiou Jul 2004

Real-Time Measurements On The Effects Of Ultra-Short High Voltage Pulses On Hl-60 Cells, Michalis C. Artemiou

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The application of high voltage microsecond pulses that are above a critical value, to biological cells, has been shown to cause electroporation (Neumann, 1989). In addition, ultra-short pulses of several tens to hundreds of nanoseconds duration have been recently shown to affect intracellular structures without disturbing the plasma membrane (Schoenbach, 2001). However, such ultra-short intense pulses are expected to cause deformation of cells due to Maxwell stresses. This deformation was studied by means of an imaging technique with 10 ns temporal resolution on HL-60 cells. The imaging system consists of an inverted microscope where a spark light source was used …

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The use of Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) is prohibited during take-off and landing of an aircraft because PEDs may emit signals that can interfere with the aircraft's navigation and communication systems. The electromagnetic interference (EMI) on the aircraft's electronics due to PEDs emissions is examined for Boeing 737 and 747 aircraft. This work, funded by the NASA Graduate Researchers Program, uses Interference Path Loss (IPL) data, collected by researchers from NASA Langley Research Center, Eagles Wings Inc. and United Airlines on several out-of-service United B737 and B747 airplanes.

B737 and B747 IPL data has been analyzed using a graphical analysis …

Dynamical Studies Of Model Membrane And Cellular Response To Nanosecond, High-Intensity Pulsed Electric Fields, Qin Hu Jul 2004

Dynamical Studies Of Model Membrane And Cellular Response To Nanosecond, High-Intensity Pulsed Electric Fields, Qin Hu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The dynamics of electroporation of biological cells subjected to nanosecond, high intensity pulses are studied based on a coupled scheme involving the current continuity and Smoluchowski equations. The improved pore formation energy model includes a dependence on pore population and density. It also allows for variable surface tension and incorporates the effects of finite conductivity on the electrostatic correction term, which was not considered by the simple energy models in the literature. It is shown that E(r) becomes self-adjusting with variations in its magnitude and profile. The whole scheme is self-consistent and dynamic.

An electromechanical analysis based on thin-shell theory …

Synergetic Control Of Power Converters For Pulse Current Charging Of Advanced Batteries From A Fuel Cell Power Source, Zhenhua Jiang, Roger A. Dougal

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a synergetic controller for pulse current charging of advanced batteries from a fuel cell power source. Pulse current charging protocol that has been shown to have many advantages over the traditional constant current/constant voltage protocol is applied in a fuel cell powered battery-charging station to reduce the total charging time. Strong nonlinearity and dynamics exist in such systems. In this paper, the synergetic control approach is applied to regulate the buck converters that control the pulse charging currents to the many batteries. A practical synergetic controller to coordinate pulse current charging of the battery is synthesized and …

Dynamic Element Matching Techniques For Delta-Sigma Adcs With Large Internal Quantizers, Brent C. Nordick Jul 2004

Dynamic Element Matching Techniques For Delta-Sigma Adcs With Large Internal Quantizers, Brent C. Nordick

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents two methods that enable high internal quantizer resolution in delta-sigma analog-to-digital converters. Increasing the quantizer resolution in a delta-sigma modulator can increase SNR, improve stability and reduce integrator power consumption. However, each added bit of quantizer resolution also causes an exponential increase in the power dissipation, required area and complexity of the dynamic element matching (DEM) circuit required to attenuate digital-to-analog converter (DAC) mismatch errors. One way to overcome these drawbacks is to segment the feedback signal, creating a "coarse" signal and a "fine" signal. This reduces the DEM circuit complexity, power dissipation, and size. However, it …

A New High Power Parallel Converter Scheme For Active Power Filters, Malabika Basu, S. P. Das, Gopal Dubey Jul 2004

A New High Power Parallel Converter Scheme For Active Power Filters, Malabika Basu, S. P. Das, Gopal Dubey

Articles

A new topology for efficient utilisation of parallel converters as VAR compensators and active power filters (APF) for high power loads is proposed. Because of limited power handling capacity of individual devices, paralleling is the choice to increase rating of equipment, while keeping the THD of the current at the PCC within the agency specified standards. It has been reported in the literature that paralleling several converters, rather than switches, is more reliable in sharing of load. From this perspective, multilevel converters carry lot of weight, as their typical power circuit configuration limits the stress on individual devices to an …

Modeling Nerve Electro-Stimulation In The Nanosecond Regime, Feng Chen Jul 2004

Modeling Nerve Electro-Stimulation In The Nanosecond Regime, Feng Chen

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Numerical simulations of electrical stimulation of frog gastrocnemius muscles have been carried out for pulse durations in the nanosecond regime. There are a number of potential advantages in using ultra-short pulses for neural stimulation, and no previous electro-stimulation work in the sub-microsecond regime has been reported. A timedependent, three-dimensional analysis model was developed and implemented for three distinct situations: (i) direct stimulation via electrode contact, (ii) indirect excitation based on electrodes immersed in a saline-filled bath, and (iii) remote electromagnetic stimulation through vacuum. The simulations yielded strength-dm ation (S-D) curves with pulse durations as short as 5 ns. Good agreement …

Non-Uniformity Compensation For Fiber Optic Weigh In Motion Sensor, Shinobu Doi Jul 2004

Non-Uniformity Compensation For Fiber Optic Weigh In Motion Sensor, Shinobu Doi

Theses and Dissertations

This report studies the effect on the accuracy o f weigh-in-motion (WIM) measurements due to the non-uniformity along the length o f a fiber-optic WIM sensor, and demonstrates an effective compensation method. Accurate WIM calculations require accurate input signals from the road sensors. Today’s WIM systems that use piezzo-electric sensors, electronic strain gages or load cells have errors anywhere from +/-6% to +/-50%, with -i-/-15-20% being the typical range. Fiber-optic WIM sensors have promising advantages. However, the state of the technology is still in its infancy consisting mostly of qualitative studies. This report isolates the problem of non-uniform sensitivity in …

Neural Network Stabilizing Control Of Single Machine Power System With Control Limits, Wenxin Liu, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch, Mariesa Crow Jul 2004

Neural Network Stabilizing Control Of Single Machine Power System With Control Limits, Wenxin Liu, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Power system stabilizers are widely used to generate supplementary control signals for the excitation system in order to damp out the low frequency oscillations. This paper proposes a stable neural network (NN) controller for the stabilization of a single machine infinite bus power system. In the power system control literature, simplified analytical models are used to represent the power system and the controller designs are not based on rigorous stability analysis. This work overcomes the two major problems by using an accurate analytical model for controller development and presents the closed-loop stability analysis. The NN is used to approximate the …

Multilevel Inverters With Equal Or Unequal Sources For Dual-Frequency Induction Heating, B. Diong, S. Basireddy, Keith Corzine, Yakov L. Familiant Jul 2004

Multilevel Inverters With Equal Or Unequal Sources For Dual-Frequency Induction Heating, B. Diong, S. Basireddy, Keith Corzine, Yakov L. Familiant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Most existing power supplies for induction heating equipment produce voltage at a single (adjustable) frequency. Recently, however, induction heating power supplies that produce voltage at two (adjustable) frequencies have been researched and even commercialized. Dual-frequency power supplies are a significant development for heat-treating workpieces with uneven geometries, such as gears, since different portions of such workpieces are heated dissimilarly at a single frequency and so require a two step process using a single-frequency power supply. On the other hand, a dual-frequency power supply can achieve the desired result for such workpieces in a one step process. This paper proposes the …

Stability Analysis Of Jump-Linear Systems Driven By Finite-State Machines With Markovian Inputs, Sudarshan S. Patilkulkarni Jul 2004

Stability Analysis Of Jump-Linear Systems Driven By Finite-State Machines With Markovian Inputs, Sudarshan S. Patilkulkarni

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A control system with a fault recovery mechanism in the feedback loop and with faults occurring in a non-deterministic manner can be modeled as a class of hybrid systems, i.e., a dynamical system switched by a finite-state machine or an automaton. When the plant and controller are linear, such a system can be modeled as a jump-linear system driven by a finite-state machine with a random input process. Such fault recovery mechanisms are found in flight control systems and distributed control systems with communication networks. In these critical applications, closed-loop stability of the system in the presence of fault recoveries …

Efficient Orchestration Of Sub-Word Parallelism In Media Processors, John Y. Oliver, Venkatesh Akella, Frederic T. Chong Jun 2004

Efficient Orchestration Of Sub-Word Parallelism In Media Processors, John Y. Oliver, Venkatesh Akella, Frederic T. Chong

Electrical Engineering

Communication and multimedia applications with increased data rates and enhanced functionality continuously raise the bar for the computational requirements of future microprocessors. In order to meet these computational demands it is necessary to exploit sub-word parallelism efficiently. We propose to make sub-word data movement a first-class operation in microprocessor architectures by introducing a Sub-word Permutation Unit (SPU)in the execution pipeline. The SPU is evaluated in the context of the MMX media co-processor for the Intel Pentium architectures, but our results can be extended to any processor that supports sub-word parallelism. We find that the SPU all ws us to orchestrate …

Design Of An Autopilot For Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Reed Siefert Christiansen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the design of an autopilot capable of flying small unmanned aerial vehicles with wingspans less then 21 inches. The autopilot is extremely small and lightweight allowing it to fit in aircraft of this size. The autopilot features an advanced, highly autonomous flight control system with auto-launch and auto-landing algorithms. These features allow the autopilot to be operated by a wide spectrum of skilled and unskilled users. Innovative control techniques implemented in software, coupled with light weight, robust, and inexpensive hardware components were used in the design of the autopilot.

Printer Modeling For Document Imaging, Margaret Norris, Elisa H. Barney Smith Jun 2004

Printer Modeling For Document Imaging, Margaret Norris, Elisa H. Barney Smith

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The microscopic details of printing often are unnoticed by humans, but can make differences that affect machine recognition of printed text. Models of the defects introduced into images by printing can be used to improve machine recognition. A probabilistic model used to generate images showing toner placement bears similarities to actual printed images. An equation derived for the average coverage of paper by toner particles having probabilistic placement is developed using geometric probability. Simulations show that averages of ‘printed images’ do have the same average coverage as the derived average coverage equations.

Identifying Variable-Length Meaningful Phrases With Correlation Functions, Hyoung-Rae Kim, Philip K. Chan Jun 2004

Identifying Variable-Length Meaningful Phrases With Correlation Functions, Hyoung-Rae Kim, Philip K. Chan

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Finding meaningful phrases in a document has been studied in various information retrieval systems in order to improve the performance. Many previous statistical phrase finding methods had different aim such as document classification. Some are hybridized with statistical and syntactic grammatical methods; others use correlation heuristics between words. We propose a new phrase-finding algorithm that adds correlated words one by one to the phrases found in the previous stage, maintaining high correlation within a phrase. Our results indicate that our algorithm finds more meaningful phrases than an existing algorithm. Furthermore, the previous algorithm could be improved by applying different correlation …
