Flux-Weakening Control Methods For Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines In Electric Vehicles At High Speed, Samer Alwaqfi, Mohamad Alzayed, Hicham Chaoui

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are widely favored by manufacturers for use in electric vehicles (EVs) because of their many benefits, which include high power density at high speeds, ruggedness, potential for high efficiency, and reduced control complexity. However, since the Back Electromotive Force (EMF) increases proportionally with the motor’s rotational speed, it must be carefully controlled at high speeds. Flux-weakening (FW) control is required to avoid excessive electromagnetic flux beyond the power source and inverter’s voltage restrictions. This paper aims to compare various FW control strategies and analyze their effectiveness in maximizing the speed of PMSMs in EV applications …

Streamer Discharge Modeling For Plasma-Assisted Combustion, Stuart Reyes, Shirshak Kumar Dhali Jan 2025

Streamer Discharge Modeling For Plasma-Assisted Combustion, Stuart Reyes, Shirshak Kumar Dhali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Some of the popular and successful atmospheric pressure fuel/air plasma-assisted combustion methods use repetitive ns pulsed discharges and dielectric-barrier discharges. The transient phase in such discharges is dominated by transport under strong space charge from ionization fronts, which is best characterized by the streamer model. The role of the nonthermal plasma in such discharges is to produce radicals, which accelerates the chemical conversion reaction leading to temperature rise and ignition. Therefore, the characterization of the streamer and its energy partitioning is essential to develop a predictive model. We examine the important characteristics of streamers that influence combustion and develop some …

Input Independent Observers For Bilinear Systems Using Convex Optimization, M. Aminul Haq, W. Steven Gray

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

An asymptotic state variable observer is proposed for a continuous-time bilinear dynamical system with the distinguishing feature that the error dynamics are globally asymptotically stable and independent of the applied input. Only the speed of convergence of the error dynamics may be input dependent. The approach is to apply classical Lyapunov stability theory using a convex optimization algorithm and linear matrix inequality (LMI) tools to in effect isolate the stability property of the error dynamics from the input. The LMIs are used to turn the nonconvex problem into a convex problem. The method is demonstrated on an induction motor drive.

Assessing Techno-Economic Performance Of Synchronous Condensers And Static Synchronous Compensators In Renewable Energy-Integrated Weak-Grids Using Hedge Feedforward Feedback-Based Online Gated Recurrent Unit, Md Ohirul Qays, Iftekhar Ahmad, Daryoush Habibi, Mohammad A.S. Masoum

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

To achieve net-zero targets in many counties, renewable energy generators (REGs) are integrated with grids where less fault current is produced compared to synchronous generators. Accordingly, fault level availability, known as ‘system strength’, is reduced at point of coupling (POC) buses. A minimum system strength level is crucial for REGs to accurately detect and ride-through faults. To maintain adequate system strength in renewable energy-based weak grids, researchers and engineers have recommended supplementary devices, such as synchronous condensers (SynCons) or static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs), to provide the required fault-current. Because SynCons and STATCOMs are costly devices, their optimal sizes and placement …
