Santa Clara Radio Astronomy Project (SCRAP) is a multi-year project that aims to make radio astronomy accessible to the Santa Clara University community. Previous iterations have focused on constructing and improving a parabolic radio telescope located on the balcony of the fourth floor at The Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation at Santa Clara University. For decades, robots have been kept in cages in industry. With the advances of collaborative robots and Artificial Intelligence (AI), there is a shift towards humans and robots working together. In this research, we propose an ergonomically friendly collaborative robotic cell that enables a human and a collaborative robot to work synergistically to assemble a mobile robot. The collaborative robot provides the parts while explaining the process through a computer, and the human co-worker follows the instructions to complete the assembly. Radio Detection and Ranging (radar) is a core application of RF engineering, traditionally implemented through active systems that transmit high-power signals and process their reflections to estimate target range and velocity. However, active radar systems require significant power, cost, and regulatory overhead. Environmental disturbances induced by climate change have caused significant changes in our ecosystems and are threatening the health of our environments. Differential Fault Analysis (DFA) is a potent hardware attack that threatens cryptographic security by injecting faults into a cipher implementation to reveal secret keys. This project aims to mitigate DFA attacks on the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) by implementing targeted countermeasures in an embedded AES-128 encryption core. Two key techniques are explored: Randomization and Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR). The randomization approach introduces unpredictability into the encryption process, which involves inserting dummy rounds, artificial noise, and random delays, to disrupt an attacker’s timing and analysis, while TMR provides redundancy by replicating critical rounds of computation and using majority voting to correct …

This paper reviews different control methods used in wind energy systems to improve how they work and connect to the power grid. It covers simple control methods like Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers, as well as more advanced ones like Sliding Mode Control and intelligent controls such as fuzzy logic and neural networks. The strengths and weaknesses of each method are discussed, focusing on how well they handle changes in wind and load, keep power quality high, and stay stable. A Ka-Band, 26.5–40 GHz, omnidirectional metamaterial-inspired antenna was designed, built, and tested to develop a simple printed compact (10.3 mm × 10.3 mm × 0.0787 mm) multiple-point sensor for air pollution monitoring. This Ka-band antenna generated a dual band at 27.49–29.74 GHz and 33.0–34.34 GHz. The VSWR values within the two bands are less than 1.5. The radiation and total efficiency are 97% and 92% in the first band and they are both 96% in the second band. The maximum gain is between 3.26 and 5.50 dBi and between 5.09 and 6.52 dBi in the first and second bands, respectively. …

The DAMPER project, which stands for Delay and Attenuation Modules for Propagation Emulation and Response, is a hands-on system designed to help test how radio signals behave in the real world. When radio waves travel over long distances or through different environments, they often get weaker (attenuated) or arrive later than expected (delayed). DAMPER lets students, researchers, and engineers simulate those conditions in a lab using simple, low-voltage electronics.

Electricians face significant health and safety hazards when inspecting drop ceilings, including exposure to dust, asbestos, and the risk of falls. To address these challenges, this project proposes a lightweight, autonomous robot capable of inspecting drop ceilings and assisting with wire tracing tasks—thereby distancing electricians from hazardous environments. The robot employs tread-based mobility to navigate fragile ceiling panels, integrated ultrasonic sensors and bumpers for obstacle avoidance, and an antenna system to detect and follow energized wire signals. Despite becoming a standard for low-power microcontrollers, the ARM Cortex- M0’s proprietary nature poses difficulties for developers looking for cost, flexibility, and transparency, especially in startup, academic, and hobbyist contexts. In order to overcome these drawbacks, this paper offers an open-source implementation of the ARM Cortex-M0 processor that is easily accessible and customizable. My design encourages development of open-source hardware while still maintaining compatibility with the vast ARM software ecosystem. This senior project details the improvements made to Cal Poly’s Hybrid AC/DC House project. The previous state of the house experienced issues with proper reading of the current power being drawn from the connected AC sources, as well as with the system’s multiple-input single-output converter, where thermal overheating of specific FETs prevented the system from reaching its maximum output power. Energy demands have been on the rise, as environmentally harmful power generation systems stay popular due to lower costs and compact designs compared to renewable energy infrastructure. We challenge this problem with a modular photovoltaic microgrid system for power generation in underutilized spaces. The Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) charge controller employed is low-cost and power efficient. This report presents the preliminary design for a distributed localization framework for a multi-robot system. Many robotics research papers provide simulations of proposed algorithms in regards to formation control and task allocation. However, it is often that these proposals are without hardware experiments, being limited only to simulation. The objective of this framework is to provide a hardware implementation of a distributed Kalman filtering algorithm for multi-agent localization, as well as provide grounds for future multi-agent experiments. However, automated apple harvesting via robotic manipulation must overcome certain challenges to be an effective and efficient method. Distributed digital phased arrays are rising technologies that help enable applications such as search and rescue operations, wireless communication, radar navigation, and military operations, among many others. Due to their improved angular resolution, digital phased arrays offer superior direction-finding capabilities compared to traditional analog phased array systems. However, this improvement comes at the cost of increased complexity—specifically, the need for precise synchronization of phase, time, and frequency across physically separated nodes. Without synchronization, the distributed phased array's gain and direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimations deteriorate significantly.

Smart electric vehicle (EV) charging control methods from a central utility hub often require communication infrastructure over a large service area of electric power distribution systems with a large number of nodes. With significant increase in EV adoption expected in the near future and the associated impacts on power systems, the effect of volt/var optimization (VVO) as the next step to conservation voltage reduction (CVR), requires reevaluation. Implementation of a cluster-based VVO control strategy employs a novel approach with machine learning (ML) load forecasting to reduce device adjustments through k-means clustering of contiguous time steps with similar active power load in which a single adjustment would be sufficient. This paper presents an innovative method for designing high-performance electric motors by integrating machine learning (ML) based meta-modeling with a differential evolution (DE) optimization algorithm. The approach utilizes finite element analysis (FEA) data to train the ML meta-model, allowing for efficient optimization of high-power-density machines, such as the reluctance rotor and permanent magnet (PM) stator combined excitation motor, which is characterized by nonlinearities. Multiphase inductive wireless charging coils have been proposed recently to improve coupler surface power density, reduce component stress and size, and provide near-constant power delivery to charge mobile electric systems. Several aspects for the fundamental characterization of multiphase coils are explored up to six phases including approximate mutual inductance with size and turn variation, induced voltage, and output power estimation. The relative component stress and size of passive components for resonant operation are compared between the multiphase variants. Electric machines for aviation demand ultra-efficient, compact designs with high specific power density, which can be achieved through advancements in both electromagnetic design and thermal management. This paper proposes and investigates an integrated thermal management approach for a coreless stator axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machine featuring a double-sided Halbach array PM rotor, two stators, and an aluminum nitride (AlN) cold plate positioned between the stators for direct cooling. The cold plate incorporates internal serpentine channels for liquid hydrogen circulation.
