STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The purpose of this study was to investigate attitudes of parents, whose children were in bilingual programs, toward bilingual education. The study also sought to find if differences existed between income groups in attitudes related to sex, age, mobility, and education.

PROCEDURE

Two hundred and twenty persons (or 110 pairs of parents) whose children were in bilingual programs in ten schools in the Albuquerque Public School System comprised the sample. The problem of this study is how can youth who have accepted deviant behavior as a pattern be identified. This study investigates relationships among anomie, aspirations, delinquency, and educational achievement, and it theorizes that students who are not anomic, hold high aspirations, and achieve normally in school will not exhibit deviant behavior as a pattern. This study was undertaken to develop an empirical basis for the comparison of Anglo and Navajo children in the relationship of their self concept to their academic achievement. There is much research dealing with the way Anglo children view themselves in their interaction with family, friends and the school program. The sample was selected randomly from officially accredited high schools in a single state in Colombia. The schools from which the sample was drawn were all composed of grades 6 through 12. All full-time teachers in each of the selected schools were required to complete a questionnaire. The purpose of the study was to measure the equali­zation effects of twenty selected New Mexico school fund distributions relative to the school districts' fiscal capacities.

An index of fiscal capacity was developed by dividing the assessed valuation of each school district by the 180 day average daily membership during two target years. The target years, 1968-69 and 1969-70, were selected because the state legislature changed the basic public school distribution formula from a "weighted pupil" index for 1968-69 to a "staffing" index for 1969-70.

Testing of oral English competencies in pre­literate children has had two basic problems: tests were either specific to a particular program of instruction or were inefficient in terms of breadth of coverage of the complex language skills required for adequate communication. Cloze Procedure showed promise of efficient sampling of language skills unrelated to any specific instructional program, but was limited by inadequate scoring precision. From the theoretical and research literature on personality, interaction and teacher characteristics, a general hypothesis was formulated:

Personality maladjustment of a teacher generates personality maladjustment in the pupils in that teacher's classroom resulting in the pupils' failure to incorporate appropriate information and the maintenance of a state of high anxiety.

Reformulated operationally the hypothesis became: Personality maladjustment of a teacher, as measured by the MMPI, results in the maintenance of high levels of anxiety, as measured by the Sarason anxiety scales, in the pupils of that teacher's classroom.

Altruistic Therapy, which focuses on getting versus giving, consists of helping people recognize their self-defeating patterns of getting and helps them learn to give to themselves and others so that they can come to appreciate themselves and improve their interpersonal relationships. This study was designed to measure attitudinal interactions of selected vocational school teachers and students concerning grades and attendance, school policy problems, at a Technical Vocational Institute. This was done in an attempt to determine whether students and teachers viewed themselves and existing attendance and grading policy as constants or variables.
