The purpose of this study has been to construct a Spanish language arts program for Spanish-speaking students in levels three and four, or ninth and tenth grades, depending on the students' previous language experiences.

A survey of the literature seemed conclusive in stating that many Spanish-speaking students in the United States become functional illiterate or drop-outs under our educational system. The research which has been done on this subject led to the conclusion that Spanish­speaking students are not being offered the necessary educational opportunities which are essential for them to take their place in the mainstream of society.

This study dealt with the upward movement of aspirants from the role of teacher to the role of principal. The Hall's movement was viewed from the context of Van Gennep's "rites of passage" and sponsorship. Van Gennep conceptualized the movement from one role to another in three stages. These stages are: (1) separation, (2) transition, and (3) incorpora­tion. Sponsorship is a mechanism for organizational control and serves as a mechanism to facilitate or hinder movement within the organization.

The study examined significant differences between political knowledge, political interest, citizen role, and civic tolerance scores of civics and non-civics ninth-grade students in relation to two ethnic groups (Anglo-American and Spanish-American) and four categorical groups (sex, socio-economic status, achievement level, and language spoken in the home). The purpose of the study was to see if a relationship existed between the ninth-grade civics course and student political knowledge and attitude scores, and to see if a differential relationship existed between the civics course and the political knowledge and attitude scores of the subpopulation of Spanish-American students.

The purpose of the study was (1) to investigate the readability of seventy-five intermediate grade social studies topic-articles from eight sets of encyclopedias (1971 editions) with two readability techniques, and (2) to determine the suitability of individual encyclopedia articles for intermediate grade use from the resultant predicted readability scores.

Twenty-five topics from each of the intermediate grades four, five, and six, were randomly selected from indexes of five intermediate social studies textbook series. The central concern of this study was to investigate and analyze student perceptions of the school bureaucracy. The findings indicated a relationship between the student characteristics of age, sex, ethnicity, socio-economic status, and total effectiveness, and student perceptions of school bureaucracy. It was also found that students perceive the school more bureaucratically than did a panel of judges’ rating the same school.

It is the investigator's contention that data collected on poor children's verbal abilities was done in incorrect social situations. Current research indicates that language development is innate.
