The first major purpose of this study was to find out how Brazilian children internalize some Portuguese morpho­logical rules. The second major objective was to compare the findings with findings from other languages and with universals in the acquisition of morphology.

A research instrument was constructed to measure the productive aspects of substantive plurals, regular and irregular verb inflections, diminutives and augmentatives, and compound words. Real and nonsense words were used.

This study was concerned with determining the effectiveness of four strategies, as measured by posttest scores, Exemplification­Characterization, Characterization-Exemplification, Exemplification­Characterization-Exemplification, and Characterization-Exemplification­Characterization, for teaching toward conjunctive, disjunctive, and relational concepts. Differences in effectiveness of the four strategies for high and low achievers in mathematics were also studied.

Procedures

The sample, consisting of 480 students (grade levels 6, 7, and 8), was given a booklet containing instructions, five programed concepts to be taught by one of four strategies, and an answer sheet containing the correct answers to questions in the five programed concepts. The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of assertive training with short-term psychiatric patients. The sample consisted of 36 subjects--18 males and 18 females--who were hospitalized patients at the Bernalillo County Mental Health Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Patients were asked to participate in the study upon admission, and were randomly assigned to groups of six to either of two control conditions or to an assertive training condition. The Assessment-Only control group was only administered pre- and post-tests. The Placebo Control group received ten hours of painting and drawing between the pre- and post-tests. The problem addressed in this dissertation is whether summer vacation accounts for more of the reading-achievement gap between minority and non-minority children than does the school year. A positive finding would support the compensatory approach to minority education; it would indicate that school can close the gap between minority and non-minority children. The relationship of socio-cultural variables to selected personality variables was examined utilizing a sample of 141 Pueblo adolescent boys and girls from grade 7 through 12 with a mean age of 14. 9. Each subject was administered the 16PF and the TIB and predictions were made about scores and scoring distributions based on the Pueblo socio-cultural system as described in the anthropological literature. It was hypothesized that reading strategies used by children from Spanish-speaking backgrounds reading in English are influenced by the facility in English of those children. Maturational levels of English structures used by two such children, one estimated by the teacher to be reading above grade level and one estimated by the teacher to be reading below grade level, were measured by transformational analysis. The use and effectiveness of reading strategies including sound/graphic systems, grammar, and meaning were determined for each reader. The study sample consisted of social studies teachers and their classes in 34 New Mexico rural or small-town schools.
