In this paper, the author establishes that high schools are abandoning the Core-Plus Mathematics curriculum and determines the need for curricular reform and the motivation to develop such standards-based programs. She discovers that although Core- Plus is a nationally recognized, exemplary mathematics curriculum, school districts are deciding to discontinue the curricular option of Core-Plus. The author reviewed literature and interviewed teachers from schools that have recently decided to abandon Core-Plus in attempt to determine factors leading to these decisions. This paper discusses those interviews, provides suggestions for the future adoption of Core-Plus, and concludes with recommendations that further study be …

The State of Indiana passed alternative education legislation in 1997 to meet the needs of at-risk students who were not succeeding in the traditional school setting. The number of alternative education programs and schools in Indiana had increased 28% from the 1997-1998 academic year to the 2004-2005 academic year. There are virtually no studies linking leadership styles to effectiveness in alternative education programs for at-risk youth in Indiana. The efficacy of mentoring for educational leaders is of growing concern in the field of principal preparation. The purpose of this qualitative study was to define and describe the skills of an educational mentor. The participants in this study were five mentors and five proteges who had completed the Indiana mentor/protege pilot project, "Mentoring and CoachingDeveloping Educational Leaders." This pilot was launched in October, 2002 and was developed by The Indiana Professional Standards Board in conjunction with the Indiana University Consortium and The National Association of Secondary School Principals. The role of department chair in today’s colleges and universities is much different and more multifaceted than it was just a decade ago. Academic department chairs must conduct performance reviews, oversee budgets, carry out strategic planning, and negotiate their department’s identity within highly complex institutions (Hecht, Higgerson, Gmelch, & Tucker, 1999). Evidence gathered from ACE workshops indicated that as many as two-thirds of the chairs had no prior administrative experience and yet they face a demanding role requiring a wide range of talents (Hecht, Higgerson, Gmelch, & Tucker, 1999).

Technological, demographic, and competitive changes in distance education (DE) pose complex leadership and strategic issues for community colleges. Leaders must establish institutional and academic objectives, develop financial and technological strategies, and organize, market, and evaluate DE initiatives. Their objectives and strategies should anticipate and help shape the developing competitive environment in which their colleges operate. This qualitative case study examined DE administrative and staff leadership roles, organization structures, and strategies at three Midwestern community colleges with expanding DE programs. There is a well-documented pattern in rural areas across the plains, as well as in other parts of the United States, of population loss and the associated consolidation or closing of literally thousands of rural schools. There is also dramatic evidence of the demise of a great many, once prosperous, small communities surrounding those same schools. It is time for more effective and sustained intervention, particularly in strengthening a sense of ‘citizenship of the place’ in those communities, especially among current school-aged children. Price pressures in the form of escalating tuition will continue to impinge upon colleges and universities in an unabated fashion. While distance learning experiments and electronic assisted teaching may provide some relief in training-centric sectors of higher education, the university enterprise remains a labor intensive endeavor. Technology and healthcare expenses will continue to grow at most institutions at a rate far above the cost-of-living index. Public institutions are finding strong resistance to additional support based on tax revenue. Private institutions are increasingly being questioned about the “valueadded” they provide and whether it justifies their premium tuition.

The Relationship Between Spiritual Well Being And College Adjustment For Freshmen At A Southeastern University, Robert E. Ratliff

The purpose of this study was to identify the possible relationship between spiritual well being and college adjustment in first-year college students. The Spiritual Well Being Scale and the College Adjustment Scales were administered. Relational analysis was used to investigate 91 college freshmen enrolled in a freshman seminar course at Charleston Southern University, Charleston, South Carolina. This relational analysis included both psychological and developmental aspects of college adjustment in nine specific areas of college adjustment: anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, substance abuse, self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, family relationships, academic problems, and career problems. Evaluating A Moral Thinking Assessment Model For Evangelical Christian Liberal Arts Colleges, Michael A. Hayes

A model using moral judgment and cultural ideology (political and religious ideology) for predicting moral thinking about critical social and political issues, developed by Narvaez, Getz, Rest, and Thoma (1999), was assessed for utility with students at evangelical Christian liberal arts colleges. Freshmen (N = 199) and seniors (N = 230) from 2 evangelical Christian liberal arts colleges participated, completing the Defining Issues Test 2, Inventory of Religious Belief, and Attitudes Toward Human Rights Inventory. The regression model predicted a significant amount of variance for the students in this study; however, the R² value (.22) was much smaller than …

Perceptions Of Gender Competence: Are Christian Colleges Different, Edee Schulze, Annette Tomal

Perceptions of student and professor competence and respect were investigated through a survey of 2042 students from 77 liberal arts colleges, both Christian and non-Christian. The Christian schools are part of the CCCU (Council for Christian Colleges and Universities); CCCU responses were 78.5 percent of the total. Chi- Square and Mann-Whitney tests were used to determine if gender and type of college affected students’ responses. Two conclusions can be made about student competence and value: (1) male CCCU students are most likely to believe that male students are viewed as more competent than female students and (2) non-CCCU students are …

During winter/spring, 2005, 2,103 Troops to Teachers (T3) program completers and their school administrators from 49 states and the District of Columbia were surveyed to determine whether T3s were more effective in the classroom than traditionally prepared teachers who had comparable years of teaching experience. Respondents also returned information about their schools’ demographics, views about their teacher certification preparation program, and information about themselves, their teaching behaviors, and future plans. Sixty-one percent of the respondents returned completed surveys.

Finding qualified applicants to fill building-level administrative vacancies is a growing concern. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore and define the reasons why qualified teachers who graduated from the Experiential Program for Preparing School Principals (EPPSP) at Butler University are not practicing as buildinglevel administrators. The participants in this study were five qualified teachers who completed EPPSP and remained in the classroom. These teachers were interviewed to determine why they were not practicing as building-level administrators.
