Department Chairs’ Perception Of Faculty Participation In Accreditation Activities: A Follow-Up Survey, Cathryn Peterson

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The purpose of this study was to explore physical therapy department chairs’ perceptions of the extent to which their faculty members participated in the activities leading to accreditation, and whether or not this participation was associated with accreditation outcome. This study was conducted and completed in 2004 as a follow-up to a previous study that explored the relationships among accreditation outcome and management style employed by the chair person, faculty participation in accreditation activities, faculty commitment to implementing the plans delineated in the accreditation documentation, and faculty support of the accreditation process.

Each year, colleges and universities advertise numerous faculty positions. However, some of these institutions experience difficulties filling these vacancies. Contrary to popular belief, these difficulties do not solely stem from the inability to find qualified applicants. They may also be attributed to the candidate’s lack of understanding of how to prepare for, participate in, and conclude the interview. As professors who coordinate numerous faculty interviews, the authors will discuss how preparation, participation, and confirmation can help candidates successfully interview for faculty positions.

With national divorce statistics on a rise, higher education should consider its approach to meeting the needs of students from these homes. Specifically, faith-based institutions must think about the effects divorce has had on the faith development of students from divorced families. Using individual interviews and a focus group, I researched the experiences and faith development of seven students from divorced homes attending three private Christian institutions in Southern California. The qualitative nature of the study gave voice to the unique stories of these students.

This study was conducted to determine the extent to which student’s reflective writings during the educational leadership internship indicated if students were able to understand and relate the ELCC standards to their schools practices. A second purpose was to use these reflective journals to evaluate how well the program prepared the students for their role as future school leaders by examining how well their experiences aligned with the ELCC standards.

Between 2001 and 2005, the state of Maine shifted the focus of its statewide high school improvement efforts to include an explicit focus on adolescent literacy. One trigger for that change in focus was a 5-school adolescent literacy initiative previously launched in a rural county under the federal Northeast and Islands Regional Educational Laboratory contract. This monograph describes the multi-party mobilization that led to the creation and implementation of the adolescent literacy project and explains the link between the modest rural effort and the change in state-level reform efforts.

Faculty working in research-intensive university environments find a variety of challenges to their time, energies, and resources, including finding balance between the traditional areas of teaching, research, and service. In most research universities, the research focus becomes all encompassing, and institutional service commitments are called into question. The current study of over 500 faculty in research university environments demonstrates the need for shared governance to be clear and purposeful in its work and intentions in order to muster faculty support.

Volumes of research have documented the implementation of peer assessment in higher education (Falchikov, 1986; Huba & Freed, 2000). The literature doesn’t denote the impact of peer assessment on teacher education students. This study filled that void by investigating first-year teacher education students’ views of peer assessment.
