Teaching Postgraduate Research Methods Using A Novel Problem-Based Learning Approach, Roisin Donnelly
Teaching Postgraduate Research Methods Using A Novel Problem-Based Learning Approach, Roisin Donnelly
Papers, presentations and other resources
This session describes both the reasons for and the process of designing and delivering a Research Methods Module using a Problem-based Learning (PBL) approach in a Postgraduate Diploma in Third Level Learning and Teaching at a higher education institute in Ireland. The students who undertake this part-time Module are cohorts of academic staff (Faculty Members) in Higher Education (HE). They are hitherto referred to as participants. This module is one of eight offered on the PG Diploma, all designed and delivered using Problem-based Learning. The entire PG Diploma is voluntary, and only Faculty who are keen to implement novel pedagogical …
Moving Mountains: Institutional Culture And Transformational Change, Judith A. Ramaley
Moving Mountains: Institutional Culture And Transformational Change, Judith A. Ramaley
Higher Education
Our institutions are changing all the time but for the most part these changes do not make a big difference, either because the results are confined to an isolated segment of the organization or because the environment is not responsive. To be considered truly transformational, the initiative must alter the culture of the institutions by changing select underlying assumptions and institutional behaviors, processes, and products; it must be deep and pervasive, affecting the whole institution; it must be intentional; and it must occur consistently over time (Eckel, Hill, & Green, 1998).

Integration Of Technology In Math And Science Education – A Model For Teaching Elementary And Middle School Pre-Service Teachers, R. W. Fisher, J. D. Ha, J. P. Chinnici
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
This paper describes the development and implementation of a course, Integration of Technology in Math and Science Education, to introduce elementary and middle school pre-service teachers to real technology skills that they can use in their future classrooms. Activities allowed the students to learn technology skills while using the Internet to enrich their content skills and share information with their fellow students. The course was designed to allow students to master a variety of technology skills, and see how these skills can be used appropriately in their future classrooms, while also increasing their comfort level to use the technology and …

Using Technology Within The Teacher Preparation Program As A Model For Effective Instruction, J. P. Johnson, L. E. Wilkowski
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
This article describes a methods course for teachers of elementary science and how it was enhanced to increase students’ abilities and attitudes toward using technology as a tool in teaching science. The course was enhanced as a result of the Virginia Collaborative for Excellence in the Preparation of Teachers (VCEPT) project. Prior to this project, the course was known for its constructivist approach, cooperative group activities, and experiential base that allowed students to actually do and teach elementary science. As a result of VCEPT, the class now also features an elaborate technology component. Technology of many types are regularly modeled …

Tracking Transfer Of Reform Methodology From Science And Math College Courses To The Teaching Style Of Beginning Teachers Of Grades 5-12, E. Judson, D. Sawada
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
The purpose of this study was to determine if reformed science and math courses at community colleges and the university were impacting education majors as they began a teaching career. The reformed courses, in contrast to typical lecture classes, implemented inquiry-based methods that emphasized deep understanding of fundamental science and math concepts. Trained evaluators, utilizing the Reformed Teaching Observation Protocol (RTOP) gathered a total of 86 classroom observations to gauge the level of reform that beginning teachers (one to three years’ teaching experience) were implementing in grades 5-12. The pre-service experience of the beginning teachers varied from having had zero …

Seeking Community: Creating Effective Lifestyle Agreements, Steven P. Bird
Seeking Community: Creating Effective Lifestyle Agreements, Steven P. Bird
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
Christian colleges wrestle with the creation and maintenance of regulations for correct behavior of campus members (lifestyle agreements). Using theoretical considerations as well as specific application examples, a way is presented to create a lifestyle agreement that is internally consistent and fits the needs of the campus. Specifically, the effect of external constituencies, organizational efficiency, and, most importantly, efforts to develop community, are used to guide the construction of lifestyle agreements. While very specific examples are given, no effort is made to create a one-size-fits-all set of codes. Instead, a framework is constructed to allow a campus to develop a …

Commonality & Diversity, Donna Thoennes
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
As students are increasingly influenced by postmodern thought, which promotes ideas of community without a common center and emphasizes difference, so students may have fresh conceptualizations of what community is and how it functions. This study explored students' conceptions, experiences, and ideals of community.
The tension between commonality and diversity within community has caused much debate in the social sciences. Interviewees, who were students at member institutions of the CCCU, recognize the same tension and often struggle to navigate their relationships within a collegiate environment that promotes both.
Thirty undergraduate senior students at two Christian colleges were interviewed in February …

This article is a transcription of an address presented by Dr. David McKenna at a recent pre-conference workshop at an ACPA conference. The workshop was sponsored by ACSD in conjunction with the annual prayer breakfast. Dr. McKenna shared insights gleaned from his more than thirty years of service in Christian higher education including three presidential posts. The article focuses on two areas. They are one, what a president expects from a senior student affairs officer and two, what the SSA can expect from a president.

Student Affairs Divisions' Incorporation Of Student Learning Principles At Cccu Versus Non-Cccu Institutions, Jeff Doyle
Student Affairs Divisions' Incorporation Of Student Learning Principles At Cccu Versus Non-Cccu Institutions, Jeff Doyle
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
With the shift from an industry-based to a knowledge-based society, American higher education, and student affairs in particular, is under increasing pressure to prove its role in facilitating students' learning. The Student Learning Imperative (ACPA, 1994) and the Principles of Good Practice for Student Affairs (ACPA & NASPA, 1997) provided a professionally supported foundation for the new learning philosophy within student life.
The strong religious mission and the ministry model of student development in Christian higher education may affect the degree to which student-centered learning is incorporated. This study examined the extent to which chief student affairs officers at institutions …
