Promoting Equality And Access In Higher Education: A Comparative Study Of State Sponsored Preferential Policies In Great Britain, India And South Africa, Lanaia C. Dubose May 2002

Promoting Equality And Access In Higher Education: A Comparative Study Of State Sponsored Preferential Policies In Great Britain, India And South Africa, Lanaia C. Dubose

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Recent U.S. court decisions striking down affirmative action policies in college admissions have caused universities to seek diversity programs that can hold up to public and Jesa1 scrutiny while maintaining diversity on campus. The purpose of this thesis is to study the preference programs of other countries and determine if successful elements could be duplicated here in the United States. Specifically, the study looks at whether countries who use equality of opportunity programs (which focus on training initiatives) are more successful in increasing enrollment and hiring numbers of minorities than equality of outcome measures (which focus on quotas). The study …

Making School To College Programs Work: Academics, Goals, And Aspirations, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Shereen F. Fogel Feb 2002

Making School To College Programs Work: Academics, Goals, And Aspirations, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Shereen F. Fogel

Linda Serra Hagedorn

As many of the other chapters have indicated, the existence of special programs designed to assist urban, rural, and minority youth from low-income areas to attain college degrees and subsequent occupational success, the stark reality remains --only a small number will earn a bachelor’s degree or beyond (The Condition of Education, 1999; Levine & Nidiffer, 1997; Bureau of the Census, 1997). As Swail and Perna have indicated, the government, private foundations, and others have instituted many programs to counteract obstacles preventing these students from going to college. But despite the proliferation of programs, there remains a lack of research to …

Learning As We G(R)O(W): Strategizing The Lessons Of A Fledgling Rhetoric And Writing Studies Department, Jane Hindman

Publications and Research

Published in one of the first collections to focus on independent writing programs, A Field of Dreams. The volume offers a complex picture of the experience of the stand-alone. Included here are narratives of individual programs from a wide range of institutions, exploring such issues as what institutional issues led to their independence, how independence solved or created administrative problems, how it changed the culture of the writing program and faculty sense of purpose, success, or failure.

Seeking Community: Creating Effective Lifestyle Agreements, Steven P. Bird Jan 2002

Seeking Community: Creating Effective Lifestyle Agreements, Steven P. Bird

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Christian colleges wrestle with the creation and maintenance of regulations for correct behavior of campus members (lifestyle agreements). Using theoretical considerations as well as specific application examples, a way is presented to create a lifestyle agreement that is internally consistent and fits the needs of the campus. Specifically, the effect of external constituencies, organizational efficiency, and, most importantly, efforts to develop community, are used to guide the construction of lifestyle agreements. While very specific examples are given, no effort is made to create a one-size-fits-all set of codes. Instead, a framework is constructed to allow a campus to develop a …

Commonality & Diversity, Donna Thoennes Jan 2002

Commonality & Diversity, Donna Thoennes

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

As students are increasingly influenced by postmodern thought, which promotes ideas of community without a common center and emphasizes difference, so students may have fresh conceptualizations of what community is and how it functions. This study explored students' conceptions, experiences, and ideals of community.

The tension between commonality and diversity within community has caused much debate in the social sciences. Interviewees, who were students at member institutions of the CCCU, recognize the same tension and often struggle to navigate their relationships within a collegiate environment that promotes both.

Thirty undergraduate senior students at two Christian colleges were interviewed in February …
