Homeschooling: An Overview, Deborah Abell Feb 2002

Homeschooling: An Overview, Deborah Abell

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Even though homeschooling is not a new concept, it was a relatively small movement until 30 years ago. By the late 1990's, there were over a million students being homeschooled in the United States and the numbers seem to be growing quickly. Homeschooling has become a viable alternative to traditional education. No longer a peripheral movement, it now reflects the diversity of American society. Even though homeschooling is receiving increased attention in the popular press, there is a paucity of research on the subject (Knowles, 1988). This study is the first of its kind and reports the results of a …

Defending The Jackson Purchase: The History Of Camp Beauregard, Kentucky, Dieter C. Ullrich

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The series of events that led to the creation of Camp Beauregard was initiated on September 3, 1861, as Confederate forces under Brigadier General Gideon Pillow entered Kentucky from Tennessee to secure the riverport cities of Hickman and Columbus. In response, Union forces under Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant crossed the Ohio River and seized Paducah on September 6. The following day Confederate Major General Leonidas Polk issued orders to organize troops into field brigades in preparation for a Union advance upon Columbus. For the next two weeks both sides began to build earthworks and position artillery to fortify their …

Ten Days At Camp Dent, Dieter C. Ullrich

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The experiences of a prisoner detained at Camp Dent, a Union prison camp in Louisville, have been found in the faded pages of a long-forgotten diary. Five years ago, an alumnus of the University of Tennessee at Martin donated two diaries, several letters, and a cracked ambrotype of a relative, Private Van Buren Oldham, who fought in the Civil War. For over one hundred and thirty years the donor's family had kept these records in an old tin box, passing it on from generation to generation. In the spring of 1996 the great-grandson of Private Van Buren Oldham gave these …

The target audience for this introductory course is non-science majors, including prospective teachers. An inquiry-based, technology-rich learning environment has been created to allow students hands-on, in-depth exploration of topics in physics, and earth and space science. Course philosophy, course development, and sample activities are described in this paper, along with outcomes from a project-wide evaluation of the Virginia Collaborative for Excellence in the Preparation of Teachers (VCEPT), an investigation of change in student attitudes and …

A Future Teachers Conference – A Vehicle To Retain, Inform, And Inspire New And Prospective Teachers, J. Kasabian, L. Fathe, J. M. Dewar

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The Los Angeles Collaborative for Teacher Excellence (LACTE) Future Teachers Conference is a day-long learning event for beginning and pre-service K-12 math and science teachers. The Conference provides information, resources and connections tailored to the needs of prospective and new teachers. A unique aspect of the conference is that a group of new and future teachers serve as partners with college faculty on the planning committee. Thus the Conference not only serves to educate new and future teachers, but also provides leadership training for the planning team members; and, the presence of prospective and new teachers on the planning team …

Seeking Community: Creating Effective Lifestyle Agreements, Steven P. Bird Jan 2002

Seeking Community: Creating Effective Lifestyle Agreements, Steven P. Bird

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Christian colleges wrestle with the creation and maintenance of regulations for correct behavior of campus members (lifestyle agreements). Using theoretical considerations as well as specific application examples, a way is presented to create a lifestyle agreement that is internally consistent and fits the needs of the campus. Specifically, the effect of external constituencies, organizational efficiency, and, most importantly, efforts to develop community, are used to guide the construction of lifestyle agreements. While very specific examples are given, no effort is made to create a one-size-fits-all set of codes. Instead, a framework is constructed to allow a campus to develop a …

Commonality & Diversity, Donna Thoennes Jan 2002

Commonality & Diversity, Donna Thoennes

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

As students are increasingly influenced by postmodern thought, which promotes ideas of community without a common center and emphasizes difference, so students may have fresh conceptualizations of what community is and how it functions. This study explored students' conceptions, experiences, and ideals of community.

The tension between commonality and diversity within community has caused much debate in the social sciences. Interviewees, who were students at member institutions of the CCCU, recognize the same tension and often struggle to navigate their relationships within a collegiate environment that promotes both.

Thirty undergraduate senior students at two Christian colleges were interviewed in February …

Student Affairs Divisions' Incorporation Of Student Learning Principles At Cccu Versus Non-Cccu Institutions, Jeff Doyle Jan 2002

Student Affairs Divisions' Incorporation Of Student Learning Principles At Cccu Versus Non-Cccu Institutions, Jeff Doyle

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

With the shift from an industry-based to a knowledge-based society, American higher education, and student affairs in particular, is under increasing pressure to prove its role in facilitating students' learning. The Student Learning Imperative (ACPA, 1994) and the Principles of Good Practice for Student Affairs (ACPA & NASPA, 1997) provided a professionally supported foundation for the new learning philosophy within student life.

The strong religious mission and the ministry model of student development in Christian higher education may affect the degree to which student-centered learning is incorporated. This study examined the extent to which chief student affairs officers at institutions …

Dr. McKenna shared insights gleaned from his more than thirty years of service in Christian higher education including three presidential posts. The article focuses on two areas. They are one, what a president expects from a senior student affairs officer and two, what the SSA can expect from a president.
