Informed About Informed Consent: A Qualitative Study Of Ethics Education, Rocksheng Zhong, John K. Northrop, Puneet K.C. Sahota, Henry B. Glick, Anthony L. Rostain

Journal of Health Ethics

Informed consent is a foundational concept in modern medicine. Despite physicians’ ethical and legal obligations to obtain informed consent, no standard curriculum exists to teach residents relevant knowledge and skills. This paper presents a qualitative study of residents at one academic medical center. The authors conducted focus groups with trainees in the Departments of Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Ob/Gyn and analyzed their responses using rigorous qualitative methods. Four themes emerged: First, participants agreed that informed consent and decision-making capacity were relevant in many clinical situations. In this multiple case study, I examined what types of sociocultural resources adult English learners brought with them from their previous contexts and what new resources they drew upon in the U.S. while learning to write in the essay genre. Very few music therapists have educational background or training to be proficient at teaching at institutions of higher education. With only minimal (if any) training in andragogy and in research methodology, music therapy junior faculty (MTJF) members find themselves novice academics in the highly structured, competitive environment of the academy. In order for music therapists to be successful in their career change from clinical work to the academy, improvements and modifications to the education of future music therapy professors are likely, but data are necessary to intimate and to guide those changes. Persistence to graduation for adult undergraduate students has been challenging for decades. Many adult learners enroll into the university with numerous sociodemographic characteristics that can hinder their success. Adult students must manage multiple roles and balance their personal, professional and student roles in order to succeed. The people of the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming view entrepreneurship as the key to future survival. Entrepreneurship, they say, will encourage more people to shop locally, while attracting more outside dollars into the community. Locally owned businesses are important for a community that faces such challenges as a 54% unemployment rate, 28% living on per-capita payments to tribal members, and 62% living below the poverty level. While there are many opportunities for economic development, the twist is finding the right strategy and maintaining traditional cultural and tribal values that are important to the two tribes that share this reservation.

The purpose of this qualitative research was to explore the leadership experiences of male military spouses who serve as primary caregivers in the home. The primary objective of this research was to illuminate the voices of male military spouses from the various branches of military service to share their lived experiences and with specific regard to their leadership qualities. The purpose of this study was to examine the improvement, if any, of emotional intelligence scores of students who participated in and completed the specified professional development seminar. In addition, this study aimed to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence subscales of students enrolled in a professional development seminar that focuses on enhancing the emotional intelligence. The research design for this study was an ex post facto, quasi-experimental correlational quantitative research design. Data from the 371 students who enrolled in the Professional Development Seminar course during academic years 2015-2017 served as the sample for this study.

De-privatisation of classrooms signifies the opening of classrooms so teachers can ‘observe’, ‘be observed’ or ‘engage in team teaching’. This study examined the perceptions and practices of school staff to determine the possibilities and challenges of de-privatisation of classrooms in Fiji. Employing case study methodology, data were gathered from two urban secondary schools using on-line questionnaires and face-to-face interviews. A total of 71 questionnaires and 16 interviews were analysed using quantitative and qualitative methods respectively. There were several findings which emerged from the study. Firstly, that there is a strong correlation between ‘observe’ and ‘be observed’ by colleagues. Secondly, that …

There is a high-rate of burnout among teachers around the US often linked with the increasing stressors and demands (e.g., Iancu, Rusu, Măroiu, Păcurar, & Maricuțoiu, 2018). Additionally, Jennings and Greenberg (2009) demonstrated the importance of teachers’ social and emotional competence for promoting well-being and academic success in classrooms. Stress that is overwhelming or unaddressed can lead to teacher burnout, but there may be effective ways of promoting self-care among teachers, such as mindfulness-based practices. The present studies investigated the role of campus climate and discrimination on college students’ mental and physical health. Young adults completed measures that assessed their perceptions of campus climate, sense of belonging, depressive symptoms, anxiety levels, sleep quality, physical health symptoms, and experiences with discrimination. Despite the fact that there were not any differences in physical health or sleep quality, there were significant differences in phycological health, specifically with depressive symptoms. Across both studies, there were significant group differences in mental health, particularly that students of color reported higher levels of depressive symptoms than white students. การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) สังเคราะห์กระบวนการเรียนรู้ในสถานประกอบการเพื่อพัฒนาตนเองสำหรับพนักงานองค์กรเอกชน 2) พัฒนารูปแบบการส่งเสริมการเรียนรู้ในสถานประกอบการเพื่อพัฒนาตนเองสำหรับพนักงานองค์กรเอกชนและนำเสนอปัจจัยเงื่อนไขการนำไปใช้ การวิจัยใช้ระเบียบวิจัยเชิงปฎิบัติการ โดยกลุ่มเป้าหมายเป็นพนักงานระดับปฏิบัติการสายการผลิตในองค์กรเอกชน จำนวน 5 คนที่ยินดีเข้าร่วมโปรแกรม ผู้วิจัยใช้แนวคิดกระบวนการพัฒนาตนเอง การเรียนรู้ในสถานประกอบการ การเรียนรู้ของผู้ใหญ่ เป็นกรอบในการในการพัฒนารูปแบบการส่งเสริมการเรียนรู้ในสถานประกอบการเพื่อพัฒนาตนเองในองค์กรเอกชน ผลการวิจัยพบว่า 1. กระบวนการเรียนรู้ในสถานประกอบการ มีแนวคิดการเรียนรู้คือ 1) เป้าหมายและประเด็นในการเรียนรู้ต้องเริ่มมาจากตัวพนักงาน 2) การเรียนรู้สามารถยืดหยุ่นปรับเปลี่ยนได้ 3) การเรียนรู้จะเกิดขึ้นทันทีเมื่อต้องการใช้ประโยชน์ 4) การเรียนรู้ต้องมีความสำคัญกับสถานประกอบการ และ 5) การเรียนรู้ต้องมีความหมายกับพนักงาน ซึ่งกระบวนการการเรียนรู้ประกอบด้วยขั้นตอน การวิเคราะห์ตนเอง การตั้งเป้าหมายการเรียนรู้ การออกแบบการเรียนรู้ ดำเนินการเรียนรู้ตามที่ออกแบบ และสะท้อนผลการเรียนรู้ โดยสภาพแวดล้อมที่เอื้อให้เกิดการเรียนรู้ในสถานประกอบการ คือ ผ่อนคลายไม่กดดัน มีเครื่องมือที่ช่วยสำหรับการเรียนรู้ และทุกคนมีส่วนร่วมในการเรียนรู้ ซึ่งพบว่าเงื่อนไขที่ต้องมีสำหรับการเรียนรู้ในสถานประกอบการคือ 1) สนับสนุนงานที่ทำอยู่ปัจจุบัน 2) มีความเกี่ยวข้องกับการเติบโต 3) การให้ความสำคัญของผู้บังคับบัญชา และปัจจัยแห่งความสำเร็จที่จะส่งเสริมการเรียนรู้ในสถานประกอบการให้เป็นไปอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพคือ 1) วิธีการเรียนรู้ที่รวดเร็ว 2) ไม่เป็นงานเพิ่ม 3) การสื่อสารที่มีประสิทธิภาพ 4) มุมมองที่มีต่อปัญหาตรงกัน ซึ่งบุคคลสำคัญที่มีบทบาทสนับสนุนการเรียนรู้ในสถานประกอบการคือ ผู้บังคับบัญชา ผู้มีส่วนรับผิดชอบด้านการพัฒนาทรัพยากรมนุษย์ และเพื่อนร่วมงาน โดยการเรียนรู้ในสถานประกอบการต้องเกิดขึ้นภายใต้ความเชื่อพื้นฐานที่ว่า พนักงานทุกคนมีความสามารถในการเรียนรู้ หากแต่ขาดความรู้ ทักษะ หรือพฤติกรรมการแสดงออกบางอย่างที่ยังไม่สามารถปฏิบัติงานได้ตามมาตรฐานที่วางไว้ได้ 2. รูปแบบการส่งเสริมการเรียนรู้ในสถานประกอบการ ประกอบด้วย 1) การส่งเสริมความเชื่อพื้นฐาน โดยให้เห็นว่าการเรียนรู้เริ่มที่ตัวพนักงาน และสนับสนุนงานที่ทำอยู่เดิม ให้การเรียนรู้ของพนักงานและสถานประกอบการเป็นไปในทิศทางเดียวกัน 2) การส่งเสริมแนวคิดการเรียนรู้ โดยให้พนักงานรู้สึกถึงความเป็นเจ้าของ การตั้งเป้าหมายที่สอดคล้องกัน ทัศนคติการมองปัญหาเชิงบวก มีเครื่องมือและช่องทางการเรียนรู้ 3) การส่งเสริมกระบวนการการเรียนรู้ โดยให้มีทักษะสะท้อนคิด มีการสื่อสารความคาดหวัง มีวินัยในการเรียนรู้ 4) การส่งเสริมสภาพแวดล้อมที่เอื้อต่อการเรียนรู้ โดยฝ่ายบริหารให้การสนับสนุน มีการแลกเปลี่ยนข้อมูลการเรียนรู้ 5) การส่งเสริมเงื่อนไขที่ต้องมี โดยให้มีการพูดคุยแลกเปลี่ยนความคิดเห็นจากผู้บังคับบัญชา และติดตามการเรียนรู้เป็นระยะ มีระบบการวัดผลที่สอดคล้องกับการเรียนรู้ 6) การส่งเสริมปัจจัยแห่งความสำเร็จ โดยส่งเสริมความต่อเนื่องของการเรียนรู้และความไวในการปรับตัว และ7) การส่งเสริมบทบาทของผู้เกี่ยวข้อง ต้องมีทักษะเป็นผู้เอื้อให้เกิดการเรียนรู้ และทักษะการเป็นที่ปรึกษา

This study was conducted to determine the correlation among the Wechsler Intelligence Scales and the Rey Complex Figure Test, a measure of visual memory, in a clinical sample. The purpose was to determine the point at which a difference between cognitive ability scores (at the overall ability level or at the index level) and visual memory scores would be statistically meaningful. Participants in this study were selected from clinical client folders with completed variables of interest. The mean age of the 64 participants was 21 years (SD = 12.6). This paper examines how identity is reconstructed in second language literacy of adult female refugees and immigrants, and how their prior literacy and language experience influences their current literacy usage which develops slowly due to a lack of suitable education for them in the United States, causing difficulties during their integration process. In addition to securing minimum standards of learning among students, assessment is increasingly used as a tool to improve students’ learning. Assessment quality is measured as part of the Course Experience Questionnaire; however, the original ‘appropriate assessment’ scale has demonstrated ambiguous psychometric properties. The current study aimed to gain knowledge about occupational therapy students’ perceptions of assessment, and this was achieved by examining the factor structure and internal consistency of the six items on the ‘appropriate assessment’ scale. Shortening measurement scales can improve the scales’ feasibility, but at the same time, their measurement properties can be affected. This study investigated psychometric properties of the short Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students (ASSIST) among occupational therapy students in the United States. The students (n = 120) completed the ASSIST and provided basic socio-demographic and education-related information. Scale structure was examined with Principal Components Analysis (PCA), while consistency between scale items was assessed with Cronbach’s α and inter-item correlations.
