This paper responds to pilgrimage scholar George Greenia’s assertion that meaningful intersections exist between pilgrimage and various forms of displacement, such as migration or involuntary exile due to famine, war, or political unrest. Greenia proposes that vulnerable, displaced individuals might find shelter, both conceptually and emotionally, within the framing of pilgrimage. By extending concepts of pilgrimage, it can be understood as a deliberate and intentional journey, simultaneously emphasising the transformative potential inherent in migratory movement. This article examines the challenges of training social intervention professionals in an increasingly polarised society. Drawing on theoretical perspectives on political and affective polarisation, it explores how contemporary social divisions shape social work practice. The analysis includes findings from a five-year qualitative study on radicalisation prevention in France, highlighting tensions between security imperatives and the ethical foundations of social work. These tensions often generate mistrust and professional dilemmas for practitioners. The article argues that social work education must address polarisation directly. This community is significantly underrepresented in the labour market, yet it is hindered in accessing self-employment opportunities due to a lack of specific training and limited access to necessary resources. The purpose of the research is to explore the experiences of mature part-time culinary arts degree students in Ireland to examine the phenomenon of professionalism. While other researchers have sought the views of culinary arts educators and practitioners, the student voice is underexplored. The research focuses on a particular context: a major transition in the participants’ lives: their return to education, while working full-time as chefs. Their experiences are considered unique since they, as a group, navigate between two worlds: industry and academia. This study presented an investigation into the field of adult music education. The inspiration for this research stemmed from a perceived need for a uniquely adult learning programme which evolved into two programmes, Allegro for Adults I and Allegro for Adults II. The concept of this programme also involved the adult learning environment which was based in a music conservatoire in a university. Diversity in the curricular content was an important consideration and although the pedagogical approach was accelerated in nature, gaining knowledge and understanding underpinned the skills-based and compositional elements.

While supporting entrepreneurship through government intervention has become a global phenomenon, the OECD (2021) has identified that several communities (including women, youth, seniors, unemployed and immigrants) remain under-represented in terms of entrepreneurial activity. Inclusive entrepreneurship policies seek to enhance economic and social inclusion and emphasise the significant contribution that people from within these communities could make to local and regional development if appropriate support was offered. Few studies have explored how individuals can develop perseverance and passion towards longterm goals. This study addresses this research topic. Predictors of grit were tested while participants progressed on the Way of St. James, a long walk completed by foot or bicycle, taking several days or weeks, to Santiago de Compostela (Spain). 575 pilgrims of various nationalities self-reported measures of grit, harmonious passion, autonomous functioning, and lifelong learning attitudes. To study the association between these variables, path analysis modelling was conducted. The results show that autonomous pilgrims demonstrate more perseverance and passion towards their long-term goals than less autonomous pilgrims. …

This study investigates the career aspirations of female PhD students and recent graduates in Europe, and the decisions they made, with a focus on the reasons behind the increasing departure of female academics from academia after the completion of their doctoral studies. Qualitative data from interviews with 15 female PhD students at different stages of their doctoral journeys provided insights into the uncertainties experienced by these women regarding their future in academia. The significant impacts of this experience on life were reflected using Kolb’s cycle of experiential learning.
