Polymathy: The Foundational Source Of Creativity And Innovation., Michael Araki Aug 2025

Polymathy: The Foundational Source Of Creativity And Innovation., Michael Araki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In an era of mounting complexity and a growing need to transcend siloed thinking, this dissertation advances polymathy as a critical yet underexplored construct in the management and behavioral sciences. Polymathy is framed as an expansive approach to the pursuit, development, and application of knowledge, marked by the conjunction of breadth, depth, and integration. Building on a thought lineage that stretches from Ancient Greece through the Renaissance to the present day, this work shows that polymathy is neither a relic of the past nor an achievement reserved for a few—but a mode of being, thinking, and acting in the world …

Arts-Based Sustainability: From New York To Malawi, Martha B. Lerski Jun 2025

Arts-Based Sustainability: From New York To Malawi, Martha B. Lerski

Publications and Research

Recognizing that libraries serve multiple constituencies and subject areas, this chapter documents and advocates for development of transdisciplinary arts-based research (ABR) and culture-related projects linked to environmental challenges. Libraries contribute collections and spaces, as well as the research of library and information scientists. Libraries are currently among invisible contributors to sustainability planning and services. The chapter will link this invisibility to the value of what visual arts refer to as negative space elements in subjects ranging from traditional ecological knowledge to environmental science. Library collections, projects, and research contribute to education for sustainable development (ESD) as required to achieve the …

Re-Imagining Professional Learning For Teachers: A Reflection On The Transformative Experience Of An Organic Inquiry., Desiree J. Gilbert Dr

Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education

Challenged, frustrated and motivated by my observation and sense that learning experiences are often designed and facilitated with an emphasis on criticality over creativity, I engaged in PhD studies to explore the question, How can expanding my understanding of creativity and its connection to learning assist me to re-imagine professional learning for teachers so that their learning experiences are enhanced? In this article I discuss how my practice as a professional learning facilitator for teachers transformed through this study. In particular I describe my experiences and findings from my open exploration of creativity as a phenomenon and how the organic …

Colonising Creatitvity_Combined Final Script 2024_Published, Strutts Psyridis Med, James Thompson Phd

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

This paper examines the evolving landscape of contemporary screen education, with a focus on the impact of progressive, constructivist and vocational pedagogies, arguing that their convergence with digital surveillance and AI risks undermining student agency and creative ownership. The authors draw on philosophical and educational perspectives to contrast and critique artistic, scientific, and vocational models of creativity and highlight the twenty-first century shift to technocratic imperatives within these pedagogies. The paper contends that techno-centric, market-driven learning environments may counter stated student-centred aims, and colonise students’ creative consciousness. The authors conclude by advocating for renewed emphasis on embodied, experiential practice in …

The Role Of Play In Fostering Creativity And Purpose, Caitlin Quarrington

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

While play is a universal experience that transcends age, discipline, and location, it is often understood to be a juvenile experience and is not intentionally pursued into adulthood. Building on existing understandings of play and creativity, this Synthesis develops a transdisciplinary Play-Flow Intervention Model that leverages play as an intervention at two critical points during the flow cycle to alleviate struggle and expedite movement towards flow. Integrating play during periods …

Creativity-Integrated Art History: A Pedagogical Framework, Alysha Meloche, Jen Katz-Buonincontro

Art History Pedagogy & Practice

Art history offers a unique opportunity for students to encounter real, historical examples of the creative process in action. By showing examples of the complex process through which artwork is created, art history classes can provide emulative examples for the next generation of innovative designers, artists, historians, educators, and creative thinkers. Art history has a tradition of teaching Big-C creativity principles by highlighting creative products and individuals. Therefore, the art object is emphasized at the expense of unpacking the process and everyday, or mini-c, creativity of the work. At a time when the field of Art History is beginning to …
