‘The Good English’: The Ideological Construction Of The Target Language In Adult Esol, Kelsey Swift

Publications and Research

This project problematizes hegemonic conceptions of language by looking at the construction of ‘English’ in a nonprofit, community-based adult ESOL program in New York. I use ethnographic observation and interviews to uncover the discursive and pedagogical practices that uphold these hegemonic conceptions in this context. I find that the structural conditions of the program perpetuate a conception of ‘English’ shaped by linguistic racism and classism, despite the program’s progressive ideals. Linguistic authority is centralized through the presentation of a closed linguistic system and a focus on replication of templatic language. This allows for the drawing of linguistic borders by pathologizing …

Globally, while the population is ageing, only 3% of older (≥65 years) adults are engaged in entrepreneurship. The Healthy Ageing agenda is responding to the population trends by increasing its focus on elements of active or productive ageing (incorporating older working) with quality of life as a primary outcome. Alignment and exploitation of the synergies between healthy ageing and older entrepreneurial engagement are lacking. Entrepreneurship education is broadening its focus and targeting inclusivity, albeit with as yet little focus on the older population. An organization’s volunteer development program can serve as a useful tool in the P-20 framework to address transitional gaps preventing smooth and consistent movement of individuals from traditional education to career attainment. Utilizing Maslow’s Theory of Motivation and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, this qualitative study revealed volunteer motivation effectively resolved needs that work toward Self-Actualization. Satisfied needs, addressed by the volunteer experience, places the organization as a relevant partner in the P-20 framework to resolve career attainment goals. โปรแกรมการเรียนรู้ระหว่างวัยถือเป็นเครื่องมือในการแก้ปัญหาความแปลกแยกและลดการพึ่งพาทางสังคมของผู้สูงอายุ และยังสร้างให้เกิดความสัมพันธ์เชิงบวกระหว่างวัยจากการการแลกเปลี่ยนเรียนรู้ในลักษณะต่างตอบแทนของผู้สูงอายุและเด็ก งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) วิเคราะห์ความต้องการจำเป็นในการส่งเสริมความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผู้สูงอายุและเด็กผ่านโปรแกรมการเรียนรู้ระหว่างวัยที่เหมาะสมกับบริบทไทย 2) พัฒนาหลักการออกแบบและต้นแบบโปรแกรมการเรียนรู้ระหว่างวัยเพื่อส่งเสริมความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผู้สูงอายุและเด็ก และ 3) ทดลองและประเมินผลการใช้ต้นแบบโปรแกรมการเรียนรู้ระหว่างวัยเพื่อส่งเสริมความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผู้สูงอายุและเด็ก และนำเสนอหลักการออกใหม่ที่ได้จากบทเรียนจากการวิจัย แบ่งการดำเนินวิจัยเป็น 3 ระยะตามวัตถุประสงค์การวิจัย โดยตัวอย่างในการวิจัยประกอบด้วยนักปฏิบัติจากในเมืองและนอกเมือง จำนวน 24 คน ตัวอย่างวิจัยระยะที่ 2 ประกอบด้วย นักวิชาการที่มีประสบการณ์ จำนวน 9 คน และ ตัวอย่างวิจัยในระยะที่ 3 ของการดำเนินการวิจัย คือ ผู้สูงอายุที่มีอายุ 60-69 ปี และเด็กที่มีอายุระหว่าง 10-12 ปี อย่างละ 17 คน เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยคือ โปรแกรมการเรียนรู้ระหว่างวัยเพื่อส่งเสริมความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผู้สูงอายุและเด็ก วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยใช้การวิเคราะห์เนื้อหา การวิเคราะห์โดยใช้สถิติเชิงบรรยาย ผลการวิจัยสรุปได้ดังนี้ ผลการวิเคราะห์ความต้องการจำเป็นในการส่งเสริมความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผู้สูงอายุและเด็กผ่านโปรแกรมการเรียนรู้ระหว่างวัยที่เหมาะสมกับบริบทไทย พบว่า นักปฏิบัติควรได้รับการส่งเสริมทั้งสิ้น 4 ประการ คือที่ 1) ความตระหนักรู้ในความสำคัญของการส่งเสริมความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างวัย 2) ความต้องการจำเป็นด้านความรู้ความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับแนวคิดในการจัดกิจกรรมเพื่อส่งเสริมความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างวัย 3) ความต้องการจำเป็นด้านทักษะการจัดกิจกรรมเพื่อส่งเสริมความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างวัย 4) ความต้องการจำเป็นด้านความพร้อมในการจัดกิจกรรมส่งเสริมความสัมพันธ์เรียนรู้ระหว่างวัย หลักการออกแบบและต้นแบบโปรแกรมการเรียนรู้ระหว่างวัยพัฒนาจากแนวคิดทฤษฎีการเรียนรู้ระหว่างวัยและแนวคิดการศึกษานอกระบบ ร่วมกับผลจากการระดมความคิดของนักปฏิบัติ ได้มาซึ่งร่างหลักการออกแบบตามแนวคิดของ Sandoval (2014) ซึ่งมีหลักการออกแบบทั่วไป 10 ประการ คือ 1) การสร้างความรู้สึกปลอดภัยในการเข้าร่วมกิจกรรมโดยให้สมาชิกที่การตัดสินด้วยตนเอง 2) การจัดกิจกรรมที่ทำให้ผู้เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมมีความรู้สึกว่าสามารถทำกิจกรรมได้ง่ายและสนุก 3) การส่งเสริมให้เกิดความเข้าใจในความแตกต่างระหว่างวัย 4) การกำหนดบทบาทของการมีส่วนร่วมของพ่อแม่ในการสร้างการเรียนรู้ระหว่างวัย 5) การจัดกิจกรรมที่ตอบสนองความต้องการของชุมชน 6) การจัดกิจกรรมที่ตอบสนองตามความต้องการของข้อเสนอของผู้สูงอายุและเด็ก 7) การใช้การสื่อสารเชิงบวกในการจัดกิจกรรม 8) การส่งเสริมให้เกิดความเชื่อถือไว้วางใจกันของสมาชิกที่เข้าร่วมกิจกรรม 9) การสร้างเงื่อนไขและสถานการณ์ที่ทำให้ผู้สูงอายุและเด็กมาพบและทำกิจกรรมร่วมกัน 10) การส่งเสริมศักยภาพในการจัดกิจกรรมของนักปฏิบัติในพื้นที่เพื่อให้สามารถพึ่งพาตนเองในการจัดโปรแกรมการเรียนรู้ระหว่างวัยได้ด้วยตนเองและยั่งยืน ผลการทดลองและประเมินผลการใช้ต้นแบบโปรแกรมการเรียนรู้ระหว่างวัย พบว่า ช่วยส่งเสริมความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผู้สูงอายุและเด็ก โดยส่งผลให้เกิดตัวแปรผลลัพธ์ 7 ตัวแปรย่อย ได้แก่ ความเข้าใจและยอมรับในความแตกต่างระหว่างวัย อันนำมาซึ่งทัศนคติที่ดีต่อคนต่างวัย 2) มุมมองเชิงคุณค่าต่อคนต่างวัย 3) ความผูกพันธ์ระหว่างวัย …

การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ 1) เพื่อศึกษาทักษะการเรียนรู้ตลอดชีวิตที่จำเป็นสำหรับเด็กในสถานสงเคราะห์ในการเตรียมความพร้อมกลับคืนสู่สังคม 2) เพื่อพัฒนารูปแบบการส่งเสริมทักษะการเรียนรู้ตลอดชีวิตสำหรับเด็กในสถานสงเคราะห์ ใช้ระเบียบวิธีการแบบการวิจัยและพัฒนา เครื่องมือในการวิจัยได้แก่ แบบสัมภาษณ์ แบบสอบถาม และประเด็นสนทนากลุ่ม โดยมีวิธีดำเนินการวิจัย (1)เพื่อศึกษาวัตถุประสงค์ที่ 1:ศึกษาเอกสารและสื่อจำนวน 30 รายการ และสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกผู้ที่เคยเป็นเด็กในสถานสงเคราะห์และประสบความสำเร็จเมื่อออกมาใช้ชีวิตในสังคม นำผลที่ได้มาสร้างเป็นแบบสอบถาม 2 ชุด 1. เพื่อสอบถามเด็กในสถานสงเคราะห์ในขอบเขตของทักษะการเรียนรู้ตลอดชีวิต และ 2.เพื่อสอบถามเจ้าหน้าที่ในสถานสงเคราะห์เด็กเรื่องการส่งเสริมทักษะการเรียนรู้ตลอดชีวิต (2)เพื่อศึกษาวัตถุประสงค์ที่ 2 ทำการสนทนากลุ่ม เพื่อให้ได้รูปแบบการส่งเสริมทักษะการเรียนรู้ตลอดชีวิตสำหรับเด็กในสถานสงเคราะห์ ผลการวิจัย พบว่า 1. ข้อค้นพบตามวัตถุประสงค์ที่ 1.มี 2 ส่วน คือ 1.1) ทักษะการเรียนรู้ตลอดชีวิตที่จำเป็นสำหรับเด็กในสถานสงเคราะห์ มี 10 ทักษะ คือ (1) ทักษะความคิดริเริ่มสร้างสรรค์ (2) ทักษะด้านสุขภาพจิต การจัดการกับความเครียด มีจริยธรรม คุณธรรม มีวินัย (3) ทักษะด้านอาชีพ การเรียนรู้ และการจัดการเวลา (4) ทักษะการคิดอย่างมีวิจารณญาณ และการแก้ปัญหา (5) ทักษะการเขียน (6) ทักษะการอ่าน (7) ทักษะการร่วมมือกับเครือข่ายต่างๆ ทำงานร่วมกับผู้อื่น (8) ทักษะคอมพิวเตอร์ เทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศ การสื่อสารสารสนเทศและรู้เท่าทันสื่อ (9) ทักษะความเข้าใจต่างวัฒนธรรม ต่างกระบวนทัศน์ (10) ทักษะการเงิน การคิดเลข คำนวณ 1.2) การส่งเสริมการเรียนรู้ตลอดชีวิตในสถานสงเคราะห์เด็ก มี 4 ด้าน ดังนี้ (1) ด้านนโยบาย ประกอบด้วย พัฒนาการเรียนรู้แบบนำตนเอง พัฒนาทักษะด้านอาชีพ และพัฒนาตามศักยภาพของผู้เรียนที่แตกต่าง (2) ด้านบุคลากร ประกอบด้วย ผู้อำนวยความสะดวกและสร้างความร่วมมือในการเรียนรู้ ผู้แนะแนวทาง และผู้เรียนร่วม (3) สภาพแวดล้อม ประกอบด้วย ด้านกายภาพคือในห้องเรียน นอกห้องเรียน ภายในบ้าน ด้านจิตวิทยา ประกอบด้วยพฤติกรรม …

แนวทางการส่งเสริมความพร้อมในการเรียนรู้ด้วยการนำตนเองของพลทหารกองประจำการในหลักสูตรการศึกษานอกระบบระดับขั้นพื้นฐาน, มณฑิตา ชมดี

การวิจัยในครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ ศึกษาปัจจัยในการส่งเสริมความพร้อมในการเรียนรู้ด้วยการนำตนเอง และนำเสนอแนวทางการส่งเสริมความพร้อมในการเรียนรู้ด้วยการนำตนเองของพลทหารกองประจำการในหลักสูตรการศึกษานอกระบบระดับขั้นพื้นฐาน รูปแบบการวิจัยเป็นแบบการวิจัยเชิงปริมาณ กลุ่มตัวอย่างคือพลทหารกองประจำการในหลักสูตรการศึกษานอกระบบระดับขั้นพื้นฐานระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลาย จำนวน 1,140 คน เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยคือแบบสอบถามปัจจัยในการส่งเสริมความพร้อมในการเรียนรู้ด้วยการนำตนเอง ผลการวิจัยพบว่า 1) ปัจจัยในการส่งเสริมความพร้อมในการเรียนรู้ด้วยการนำตนเอง ได้แก่ แรงจูงใจใฝ่สัมฤทธิ์ การเห็นคุณค่าในตนเอง สัมพันธภาพกับครูและเพื่อน ลักษณะมุ่งอนาคต บทบาทของครู ความมีวินัยในตนเอง การเรียนการสอนที่ส่งเสริมการเรียนรู้ด้วยการนำตนเอง บรรยากาศการเรียนการสอน และแหล่งเรียนรู้ ตามลำดับ โดยภาพรวมอยู่ในระดับมาก ( = 4.08, S.D.=0.52) อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ .05 2) แนวทางการส่งเสริมความพร้อมในการเรียนรู้ด้วยการนำตนเอง ประกอบด้วย 5 แนวทาง ได้แก่ (1) ด้านสัมพันธภาพกับครูและเพื่อน ได้แก่ การจัดกิจกรรมแบ่งปันความรู้และประสบการณ์ (2) ด้านการเห็นคุณค่าในตนเอง ได้แก่ การประเมินตนเองเป็นรายบุคคลเพื่อจัดกิจกรรมโครงการเรียนรู้ผ่านกิจวัตรประจำของพลทหารกองประจำการ (3) ด้านบทบาทของครู ได้แก่ การปรับแนวคิด สร้างเป้าหมายและสร้างการเรียนรู้ด้วยตนเองให้เต็มศักยภาพ (4) ด้านการเรียนการสอนที่ส่งเสริมการเรียนรู้ด้วยการนำตนเอง ได้แก่ การแนะนำส่งเสริมการใช้เทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศที่เหมาะสม (5) ด้านแรงจูงใจใฝ่สัมฤทธิ์ ได้แก่ การวิเคราะห์จุดอ่อนจุดแข็งของตนเอง ส่งเสริมจินตนาการและตั้งเป้าหมายในอนาคต

The overall aim of the Le Chéile journey of the Community Development and Youth Work programme team was to embed anti-racism in the teaching, learning and assessment of the programme. Changes were introduced to modules in terms of new content, students were exposed to different perspectives and voices, and new workshops were designed for placement preparation around identifying and responding to racism. With regard to assessment, case studies were used to develop responses to the lived experiences of racism in community development, youth work and higher education settings. Two significant crises facing communities of color are climate and environmental injustices (Schlosberg & Collins, 2014) and the achievement gap in standardized test performance as an impact of inequitable educational experiences rooted in a history of social inequities (Agarwal, 2011; Milner, 2020). Previous studies on teaching mathematics for social justice demonstrate positive student outcomes from this practice (Berry, 2008; Gutstein, 2006). Existing literature also points to benefits when focusing on a specific social justice topic during mathematics instruction (Bartell, 2013; Stocker, 2012). This study assessed a localized academic readiness model that measures academic skills relevant to an occupational program and the institutional context. Enrollment in the program’s mandatory gateway course is contingent upon establishing academic readiness either: (1) possess an associate-level or higher degree; (2) achieve placement test scores that permit enrollment in college-level English composition/critical reading; or (3) complete developmental education prerequisites to permit enrollment in college-level English composition/critical reading. The problem investigated in this study was the low completion rates of students in mandated developmental education courses at a local community college in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. The purpose of this study was to examine factors that may contribute to the persistence of community college students who have completed mandated developmental education courses. The qualitative study uses Tinto’s student departure theory as the conceptual framework to examine the lack of persistence of students in developmental education classes. Domain-specific self-efficacy is increasingly known to be related to student academic performance. This study investigated the relationship between computer and math self-efficacy, math performance, and guided in-class use of an online educational program for adult basic education students enrolled in classes at an adult education program during the 2019 – 2020 school year. Initial math test scores and pre-survey results indicated no statistically significant relationship between computer self-efficacy and math performance, or math self-efficacy and math performance. Through a series of historical case studies of individual states within the multi-state region of the Appalachian mountain range, as well as the region as a whole, this dissertation examines educational television (ETV) operations, both at the network level and that of individual stations. Though mostly thought of as “public television”—an educational and noncommercial alternative to mainstream broadcast media—these ETV networks offered, I argue, something more analogous to present-day understandings of distance education and the use of instructional media and technology. Purpose: The first attempt to develop and instruct a new course in evidence-based practice in a physical therapy curriculum proved problematic. The purpose of this paper is to describe the method of revising this traditionally taught course using a combination of flipping the classroom, team-based learning, and technology. Methods: Working with an Instructional Design Specialist, a weekly online preparatory module was created for each content topic using a variety of multimedia learning provisions including micro learning videos (PowerPoint with voiceover), transcript of the PowerPoint, a list of vocabulary words, reading, Quizlet, Flipgrids and Concept Checks. This research study explored skills and competencies that Black women need to achieve upward mobility into leadership roles in municipal government in the United States (US). The study also reveals how Black women navigate the intersection of race and gender in upward mobility. Three Black women in leadership roles in municipal government during the fall semester of 2021 participated in the study. Adolescent girls in developing countries, especially those from impoverished backgrounds, face many challenges, such as cultural preference for sons, child marriage, and gender-based violence and harassment, which limit their access, opportunities, and leadership skills.
