The Transition From Education To Work In Australia Compared To Selected Oecd Countries, Phil Mckenzie Dec 1998

The Transition From Education To Work In Australia Compared To Selected Oecd Countries, Phil Mckenzie

Dr Phillip McKenzie

This paper attempts to provide an international perspective on young people's transition from education to work in Australia. It draws on the Organisation for Economic Co- operation and Development (OECD) review of the education-to-work transition process in Member countries, on which the author worked from 1996 to mid- 1998. The first part of the paper provides some background on the OECD review. In the second part, transition structures, processes and outcomes are described in comparative terms, and strengths and weaknesses of the Australian approach are discussed.

The Influence Of Exercise Self-Efficacy And Social Support On Exercise For Air Force Personnel, Jerry Wilson Dec 1998

The Influence Of Exercise Self-Efficacy And Social Support On Exercise For Air Force Personnel, Jerry Wilson

Student Work

The purpose of the study was to determine how social support and self-efficacy function in each stage of change in exercise behavior and also to study to what extent social support and self-efficacy can predict what stage of change a person is in. To determine this, 179 Air Force men and women ranging in age from 19 to 54 years old at U.S. Strategic Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, were administered a questionnaire to determine their exercise stage of change, self-efficacy, and social support from family and friends. The stages of change for exercise were as follows: 0.0% precontemplation, …

Curriculum Unit: Developing Morals And Critical And Creative Thinking Skills Through The Novel: Number The Stars By Lois Lowry, Tracy O'Brien Dec 1998

Curriculum Unit: Developing Morals And Critical And Creative Thinking Skills Through The Novel: Number The Stars By Lois Lowry, Tracy O'Brien

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Moral education is needed in the public schools for many reasons. Violent crimes and dishonesty are rampant throughout the younger generation. David Purpel (1989), a major educator in the field of moral education, believes that we are in a cultural, political, and moral crisis and hence an educational crisis. He states that it is imperative that we confront the nature of this crisis. Purpel's major assertion is the critical importance of educators' broad responsibility for the state of the culture as it relates to their specific responsibility for the quality of the "educational program" (1989, 2). Teaching moral education, using …

A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The Expanded Food And Nutrition Education Program, Janie L. Burney Dec 1998

A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The Expanded Food And Nutrition Education Program, Janie L. Burney

Doctoral Dissertations

Data on the economic value of nutrition education programs, such as the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), can help decision makers choose between alternative programs based on costs and benefits. A cost-benefit analysis of EFNEP was conducted to determine if savings in food expenditures exceeded implementation costs. Costs were collected over a 6-months using expenditure reports and other records. Benefits were determined using prospective data from 371 females enrolled in EFNEP who completed a 24-hour food recall, behavior survey, and recorded the amount of money spent on food monthly at program entry and exit. Two treatment groups received …

Mothers' Perceptions Of Family-Centered Early Intervention Service Coordination, Elsa Macmillan Nownes Dec 1998

Mothers' Perceptions Of Family-Centered Early Intervention Service Coordination, Elsa Macmillan Nownes

Doctoral Dissertations

Profound changes have taken place in the way professionals work with families who have young children with disabilities. These changes have taken place because of revisions in what professionals believe is best practice and changes in laws that govern early intervention. Although previous researchers have addressed many questions pertaining to how best to serve young children and their families in early intervention, no previous researchers have used qualitative methods to explore parental perceptions of early intervention service coordination.

Mothers with children with special needs who resided in all nine districts served by Tennessee's Early Intervention System were interviewed. The sample …

Cognitive Development Beyond Childhood, David Moshman Dec 1998

Cognitive Development Beyond Childhood, David Moshman

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Concluding this volume on children’s cognition, this chapter addresses developmental changes in cognition that extend beyond childhood. I will not trace cognitive change across the entire span of adulthood (for lifespan accounts, see Cerella, Rybash, Hoyer, & Commons, 1993; Commons, Richards, & Armon, 1984; Craik & Salthouse, 1993; Holliday & Chandler, 1986; Hoyer & Rybash, 1994; Kausler, 1994; Lachman & Burack, 1993; Miller & Cook-Greuter, 1994; Rybash, Hoyer, & Roodin, 1986; Sinnott & Cavanaugh, 1991). Rather, I highlight changes associated with the second (and to a lesser extent the third) decade of life. The research reviewed suggests that developmental changes …

Entry-Level Competencies Needed By Bsns In Acute Healthcare Agencies In Tennessee In The Next Ten Years, Marjorie S. King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The research focused on the identification of entry-level competencies needed by Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) graduates who will begin employment in acute healthcare agencies in the next 10 years in Tennessee. The purpose of the study was to gain increased awareness of the competencies needed by graduates of BSN programs in Tennessee in order to meet the demands of the acute healthcare agencies, in light of present and anticipated changes in the healthcare delivery system. The opinions of nurse educators, nurse administrators, recently graduated BSNs, and experienced BSN graduates were solicited to assess congruency of perceptions. In addition, …
