Women's Studies At Umass Boston: Celebrates 25 Years 1973-1998, Sherry H. Penney, Jean Mcmahon Humez, Women's Studies Program, University Of Massachusetts Boston

Women’s and Gender Studies Faculty Publication Series

What follows is an impressionistic overview of our program's first twenty five years, derived in part from our archives and in part from our collective recollections, and written by the current program director. As with any celebratory institutional history, it makes no claim to objectivity. Our aim is to look back at the main lines of our growth and development, and in so doing to acknowledge many of the individuals who have contributed to the building of the program over time.

We gratefully acknowledge the work of our first archivist, UMass Women's Studies / Sociology graduate dian fitzpatrick who ...

Thinking Style Differences Among Academic Librarians, Linda M. Golian-Lui

Linda M. Golian-Lui

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether differences in thinking styles exist between senior level library administrators working in public and technical service areas in libraries with an institutional membership in the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). To facilitate this investigation, the Inquiry Mode Questionnaire (InQ) and a demographic data form were distributed in a nation-wide survey. The study achieved an 80.3% (106) return rate, with a total of 97 surveys used for data analysis. The literature review is organized in three segments: definitional dilemma, theoretical framework, and review of previous research. The definitional dilemma addressed issues ...

A Qualitative Study Of Selected Educational Issues In Nine Hospital-Related Colleges In The United States , Deanne Marie Remer

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the role of hospital-related allied health colleges in higher education; how changes in the nation's health care system have impacted these colleges; and the leadership characteristics of allied health college presidents. Based on the propositions that health care education and the preparation of a health care workforce are integral parts of our society's health care system, theories of environmental change and organizational development are presented as a theoretical foundation for this study. Four research questions were identified as the focus of exploration for this research study: (1) What impact ...

Interdisciplinary Health Professions Education: An Exploration Of Two Programs , Ann M. Valentine Jan 1998

Interdisciplinary Health Professions Education: An Exploration Of Two Programs , Ann M. Valentine

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In response to economic and demographic forces, health care delivery is changing. These powerful dynamics of change require practitioners from all disciplines to be prepared to work in interdisciplinary teams, to competently access health and information technologies, and to understand the multiple functions required for adequate health care provision (Pew Health Professions Commission, 1995). Therefore, we have reached a juncture at which a careful study of health professions education is essential. This project is an exploratory study of two programs which have been instituted to address the nation's changing health professions workforce, needs. The study is intended to establish ...

Obstacles Facing New African-American Faculty At Predominantly White Colleges And Universities, Keith Mcelroy Jan 1998

Obstacles Facing New African-American Faculty At Predominantly White Colleges And Universities, Keith Mcelroy

Trotter Review

Many African-Americans beginning their first faculty appointment at predominantly white colleges and universities may be in for a surprise. They may be under the illusion that engaging in good publishing, good teaching, and to a lesser degree, good service will ensure their advancement to tenure. Although many authors have explained in detail the consequences of not publishing, few have focused on the obstacles involved in obtaining good teaching evaluations. In many instances, African-American faculty may find their teaching evaluations are based on students' personal opinions rather than on the professors' pedagogical approaches.

This essay will examine some of the obstacles ...

Let's Get It Started: Teaching Teachers How To Implement A Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, Jamal A. Cooks Jan 1998

Let's Get It Started: Teaching Teachers How To Implement A Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, Jamal A. Cooks

Trotter Review

In today's American schools, many teachers are faced with the problem of keeping African-American students engaged in the lessons taught in pre-K-12 classrooms, a problem which at times leads to low academic performance. According to data presented in the 1994 National Assessment of Educational Progress, 48% and 66% of African-American students scored below the basic competency level in reading and mathematics respectively. With many African-American students being labelled "not proficient" in some academic content areas, a growing achievement gap exists between African-American and European-American students. This gap contributes to fewer African-Americans 1) gaining access to institutions of higher education ...
