It Works For Me: Shared Tips For Teaching, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Nov 2011

It Works For Me: Shared Tips For Teaching, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Hal Blythe

Why bother to read yet another book about teaching? What can you possibly gain that will prepare you to meet those daily moments of truth? Perhaps this book's title suggests the answer. Language Policy, Language Education, Language Rights: Indigenous, Immigrant, And International Perspectives, Nancy H. Hornberger

GSE Faculty Research

Indigenous languages are under siege, not only in the US but around the world – in danger of disappearing because they are not being transmitted to the next generation. Immigrants and their languages worldwide are similarly subjected to seemingly irresistible social, political, and economic pressures. This article discusses a number of such cases, including Shawandawa from the Brazilian Amazon, Quechua in the South American Andes, the East Indian communities of South Africa, Khmer in Philadelphia, Welsh, Maori, Turkish in the UK, and Native Californian languages. At a time when phrases like “endangered languages” and “linguicism” are invoked to describe the …

Study Looks At Maine Principals' Experiences With Challenging Behaviors In Schools, Kay Hyatt

General University of Maine Publications

Maine schools are encountering a variety of challenging behaviors by students and are using a number of strategies to address the problems, according to a study tapping the experiences of 33 elementary and high school principals. While the interventions are effective with most students, the serious needs and behaviors of a small group far exceed schools' ability and resources, according to researchers at the University of Maine's College of Education and Human Development.
