Intramural sports appeared in schools long before interscholastic athletics. Students associated themselves together in clubs and competed against each other. This student intramural competition increased until in 1913 Michigan and Ohio State each inaugurated a department of intramural athletics under the direction of one man who was expected to handle …

In the vernacular of higher education, withdrawal from college before graduation is known as student mortality. Staying for the full course of study is called survival. Advanced Techniques In Women's Field Hockey With Emphasis On Teaching Aids, Harriet Louise Sheldon

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The teaching of organized physical education for girls in our schools is rather new in comparison to the number of years schools have existed. In some states physical education is not part of the curriculum but in others, such as California, it is required by law. When one realizes that physical education in the schools is in its infancy one becomes aware of the fact that source materials must therefore be inadequate. Hockey, although an ancient sport, is one of the comparatively newest field sports in the curriculum of the physical education program in the United States. As a result …

Physical Power Relationships, Roy Lenard Anderson Jr. Sep 1949

Physical Power Relationships, Roy Lenard Anderson Jr.

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Individualization in education depends upon accurate appraisal of fundamental characteristics. A better understanding of physical abilities and potentials is essential to improvement of the physical education program. This means that the methods of science involving analysis and modification should be applied to the physical factors as well as to any other aspects of human behavior. A man is the sum total of his abilities. Abilities vary, both the inherent and the acquired. If it is important for a teacher or coach to judge ability and performance, then it is important to have adequate objective measurements pertaining to these factors.

More frequently than one might suspect, pupil's marks in physical education have been determined the night before marks were to be issued. They were then based upon attendance and the teacher's ability to remember the pupil's conformity to rules. Teachers have been known …

Teaching Combinations Of The Men Teachers Of Physical Education In The Public High Schools Of Utah, Earl G. Holmstead

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The almost universal acceptance of physical education as an integral part of education has resulted in state legislation throughout the United States requiring the teaching of physical education in the public schools. Because of this legislation, it has become necessary to better prepare teachers to carry on a worthwhile physical education program. Efficient teaching cannot be expected to result from lack of training and inadequate preparation; therefore, the college graduate who holds a degree with no specialized training is not adequately prepared to teach effectively and efficiently in our school systems of today.

In regard to the qualifications and functions …
