How The West Was Won: Why The University Of Missouri Should Be In The Sec West, Brandon Vernon
How The West Was Won: Why The University Of Missouri Should Be In The Sec West, Brandon Vernon
Finance Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper will outline the author’s reasoning behind why he believes the University of Missouri should be incorporated in the Southeastern Conference’s West division, as opposed to the East division. The author begins by giving a brief history detailing why the University of Missouri was pressed into making a decision to leave their current conference, the Big 12, and look for new membership. This will then parlay into a discussion of the decision for Missouri’s new conference to place them into the East division, a mistake in the author’s opinion. The original decision to place Missouri in the SEC East …

The Perception Of Athletes In Local And Neutral Media Markets, Gregory Stine
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the perception of professional athletes in local and neutral media markets. The purpose of the study was to determine how people in Philadelphia and people in Arkansas feel toward the Philadelphia Eagles' Nnamdi Asomugha. It was expected that the study's participants in Philadelphia would feel more positively toward Asomugha and would be more aware of his off-the-field contributions. Additionally, it was expected that there would be a positive relationship between team identification level and both positive feelings toward Asomugha and awareness of his efforts away from the field. Finally, it was anticipated that participants near Philadelphia would …
Punishment, Richard C. Crepeau
Punishment, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
After the Freeh Report was issued there was an outcry demanding that the NCAA do something to punish Penn State University. Many called for the death penalty. Others complained about the failure of the NCAA to act immediately. Then on Monday morning when the NCAA President, Mark Emmert, announced the judgment and punishment of Penn State the outcry was that the NCAA acted too quickly. It was a rush to judgment by Emmert and his colleagues. What happened to due process?

On Sport and Society
After reading the summaries and commentaries on the Freeh Report detailing the elements of scandal at Penn State University, I am surprised that I am surprised by what has been revealed. My cynicism after nearly a half century of involvement with administrators at institutions of higher education and bloated athletic programs should have left me immune to both the surprise and disgust that this affair had evoked in me. What has not surprised me is the deviousness of the principal players in this scandal, the cynicism with which they approached the issues, and the continuing reaction to it all.

On Sport and Society
The term “historic” is often used in describing any number of sporting events. It is sometimes used to exaggerate the significance of an event, often in order to promote it. There are times, though, when the term is not only appropriate, but indeed, required. The Gentleman’s Final at Wimbledon today was historic in a number of ways.

Social media has become an integral part in the communication process in today’s society. Research has found that social media’s unique characteristics allow sport organizations to meet the many wants of their fans. Eight total professional organizations from the professional and collegiate level were interviewed to answer the research question, to what extent are organizations utilizing social media? This study shows that organizations use social media more specific to their professional level. Professional sport organizations use social media more for their marketing efforts, as collegiate organizations primarily use it for public relations.
Relationship Of Facebook Usage To Team Identification, Caitlin Moyer
Relationship Of Facebook Usage To Team Identification, Caitlin Moyer
Master's Theses (2009 -)
This study examines the relationship of Facebook usage with sports team identification using Wann's (2006c) "Team Identification-Social Psychological Health Model" to help identify individuals' needs, or motives, for connecting with the team via Facebook as well as with the team itself. To the extent that the team's Facebook presence is believed to fulfill certain needs for an individual, connecting with a team via Facebook was expected to result in higher levels of team identification with that team. Thus, by determining the uses and gratifications that individuals glean from connecting with the team via the social networking site, marketers may be …

Title Ix, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
This weekend marks the fortieth anniversary of the passage of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972 whose section, Title IX, transformed sport in America. After forty years the achievements of Title IX are impressive, while some controversy persists and some misinformation continues to persist. In the past decade the conservative political attack has subsided and Title IX seems to have been removed from those still fighting the culture wars particularly on the issue of feminism.

Trailing only Manchester United’s $2.235 billion valuation, the next most valuable franchises are Spain’s Real Madrid of La Liga BBVA, and Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees. As the two of the three most dominant brands in all of sports, Real Madrid and the New York Yankees are frequently mentioned in the same context as one another, but rarely discussed through more extensive market research comparing their brand management strategies. By utilizing Kevin Keller’s acclaimed Customer-Based Brand Equity model, the relative strength of the brands …

In addition, celebrity athletes are used to help a company differentiate their products and build instant name recognition (Henriks, 1996). Evaluation of a professional athlete's performance for the purposes of compensation determination is difficult, especially when decision making may not follow the expected "instrumental rationality." This paper will look to examine the factors, both productive and non-productive, impacting an Offensive Lineman's salary in the NFL. The purpose of this study is to determine whether an offensive lineman's salary is based on productive characteristics adhering to instrumental rationality, or whether the influence of non-productive characteristics influence salary as ultimately determined by team management. Results indicate that players within the tackle position with earning salaries in the seventy-fifth percentile gain additional benefits …

Since the North American Soccer League dissolved in 1984, there was no longer a prominent professional soccer league in North America until Major League Soccer was founded in 1996. Previous research on MLS efficiency was last recorded after the 2000 season, leaving a ten-year gap. This research revisits MLS efficiency for the 2010 season through a formula based on percentages against averages of each team for all tested elements. The factors used to compute efficiency are absolute attendance, television viewership, points awarded, and total team salary. Efficiency scores are then further analyzed for anomalies. In contrast to previous research, the …

The Effect Alternate Player Efficiency Rating Has On Nba Franchises Regarding Winning And Individual Value To An Organization, Anthony Van Curen

For NBA organizations, it can be argued that success is measured in terms of wins and championships. There are major emphases placed on the demand for “superstar” players and the ability to score. Both of which are assumed to be a player’s value to their respective organization. However, this study will attempt to show that scoring alone cannot measure success. The research uses statistics from the 2008-2011 seasons that can be used to measure success through aspects such as efficiency, productivity, value and wins a player contributes to their organization. The analysis shows there is a correlation between those factors …
