Economic Value Added : Superior Measurement Of Shareholders' Value, Amalanathan Thomas

Student Works (2000-2009)

In 1961, Prof. Franco Modigliani and Prof. Merton H. Miller (MM) said in their article Dividend Policy, Growth and The Evaluation of Shares: "To measure corporate performance for market capitalization, companies should consider earnings, cash flows, dividends and investment opportunities as alternatives". Stern Stewart, an advocate of Economic Value Added (EVA) approach to shareholder value understands the issues raised under the MM model which has led him to the view that "free cash flows is cash from operations that is available, attributable to both leaders and shareholders. In other words, it is the cash that is free for distribution to …

A Psychographics And Demographic Profile Of Individual Investors Of Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, Ezlika Mohd. Ghazali

Student Works (2000-2009)

The growing complexity and sophistication of the stock market had made stock broking a specialized profession. The era of globalization will pose a threat to securities industry in Malaysia. Thus, the importance of marketing in stock broking firms should not be taken for granted. In terms of market segmentation, demographic characteristics alone may no longer serve as a basis for segmenting individual investors. This had led to the development of psychographics research to more effectively communicate and market. By analyzing the characteristics of the individual investors, brokers in Malaysia will be in a better position to identify new opportunities. The …

Health Care Financing In Malaysia, Zafar Ahmed

Student Works (2000-2009)

As the time passes the health care provision is getting more and more expensive. Traditionally the health care provision has been the duty of the governments, but because of increase in the cost of health care and fluctuation in the cost of health care, it is getting more difficult for the governments to maintain their role as health care provider. The governments want to become the regulators of health care services, rather than health care provider. The same is true for Malaysian government as well. This change of role is not that easy. Government has to consider many factors, the …

Corporate Governance In Selected Public Listed Companies In Malaysia, Sue Lin Lim

During economic boom periods, most shareholders and company regulators paid little attention to good corporate governance, hence the reason for weak corporate governance. This study investigates whether weak corporate governance has significant effects on the corporate performance, investment and financing patterns of selected public listed companies in Malaysia. Previous researches done by Xu and Wang (1997) and Saldana (1999) seem to show that there is a close link between these variables. Based on the regression model formulated in this study, a relationship between weak corporate governance with respect to corporate performance, investment and financing patterns have been established. From the …

Moreover, in the light of financial liberalization, the relationship between income and money has become increasingly unstable. All this posed a major challenge in the formulation and implementation of monetary policy because the basic framework within which monetary policy operates has changed. This research attempts to investigate the role of financial variables (monetary aggregates, credit aggregates …

M-Garch Hedge Ratios And Hedging Effectiveness In Australian Futures Markets, Wenling Yang Jan 2000

M-Garch Hedge Ratios And Hedging Effectiveness In Australian Futures Markets, Wenling Yang

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study deals with the estimation of the optimal hedge ratios using various econometric models. Most of the recent papers have demonstrated that the conventional ordinary least squares (OLS) method of estimating constant hedge ratios is inappropriate, other more complicated models however seem to produce no more efficient hedge ratios. Using daily AOIs and SPI futures on the Australian market, optimal hedge ratios are calculated from four different models: the OLS regression model, the bivariate vector autoaggressive model (BVAR), the error-correction model (ECM) and the multivariate diagonal Vcc GARCH Model. The performance of each hedge ratio is then compared. The …

Resource Allocation And Efficiency In Public Sector Audits, Kar M. Chong Jan 2000

Resource Allocation And Efficiency In Public Sector Audits, Kar M. Chong

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In recent years, the push for reform in the Australian public sector audit has placed the Office of the Auditor-General (hereafter OAG) in a more contestable or market- like environment, where the OAG is accountable for an efficient and effective provision of public sector audit. The purpose of this study is to compare the cost efficiency of in-house and contract-out arrangements to deliver financial audits in the public sector. It empirically tests whether there are audit cost and audit fee differences between in-house providers (i.e., the OAG) and contractors (i.e., public accounting firms). The secondary aims of this study are …

Bulletin 4396 - Byenup Hill Focus Catchment Benefit: Cost Analysis, Allan Herbert Nov 1999

Bulletin 4396 - Byenup Hill Focus Catchment Benefit: Cost Analysis, Allan Herbert

Bulletins 4000 -

The main text of this document concentrates on the costs of the proposed strategies, and the on-farm financial benefits from forecast production changes - in particular the production differences between the 'do nothing' and 'with strategy' scenarios.

Members of the catchment group indicated however that their main focus was on preserving their capital base. Hence some discussion of the values of land lost to salt and premiums/discounts for 'landcared' vs 'unlandcared' land appears later in the report. Economics literature suggests that including changes in land values into these analyses is incorrect. It is argued that production differences are actually captured …

An Investigation Of Price Discovery In Informationally-Linked Markets: Equity Trading In Malaysia And Singapore, David K. Ding, Frederick H. Harris, Sie Ting Lau, Thomas H. Mclnish

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Using transactions data for the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange and the Stock Exchange of Singapore (SES) for a major Malaysian conglomerate, Sime Darby Berhad, and intraday exchange rate data, we investigate whether and to what extent each exchange contributes to price discovery. Results indicate that the price series are cointegrated. The raw data appear to indicate the presence of arbitrage opportunities, but none exist after taking exchange rate changes into account. Using the common long-memory factors of Gonzalo and Granger (1995, Journal of Business and Economic Statistics 13, 1-9), we show that while the majority of the price discovery (approximately …

Liquidity And Contagion In Financial Markets, David Backus, Silverio Foresi, Liuren Wu Sep 1999

Liquidity And Contagion In Financial Markets, David Backus, Silverio Foresi, Liuren Wu

CRIF Working Paper series

This paper presents a model on contagion in financial markets. We use a bank run framwork as a mechanism to initiate a crisis and argues that liquidity crunch and imperfect information are the key culprits for a crisis to be contagious. The model proposes that a crisis is more likely to be contagious when (1) banks have similar cost-efficiency structures (clustering) and (2) a large fraction of the investment is in the illiquid sector (illiquidity). The latter is an endogenous decision made by the banks. It increases with (1) the prospect of the risky asset (risk-return trade-off) and (2) the …

Measuring Transformation: Assessing And Improving The Impact Of Microcredit, Susy Cheston, Larry Reed Sep 1999

Measuring Transformation: Assessing And Improving The Impact Of Microcredit, Susy Cheston, Larry Reed

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

The question of impact assessment is one that continues to plague microcredit practitioners. Some contend that existing impact assessment studies are meaningless, while others maintain they are absolutely necessary. The authors of this paper advocate a renewed focus on the transformation of clients and their communities, as well as a new impact assessment model to support and document this focus. They outline the key principles for conducting impact audits that include measurement of transformation among clients. They also review a series of practitioner-oriented impact assessment tools and outline future challenges for practitioners, donors, and academics in improving performance through impact …
