Mutual Funds’ Soft Dollar Arrangements: Determinants, Impact On Shareholder Wealth, And Relation To Governance, Yaman Ö. Erzurumlu, Vladimir Kotomin
Mutual Funds’ Soft Dollar Arrangements: Determinants, Impact On Shareholder Wealth, And Relation To Governance, Yaman Ö. Erzurumlu, Vladimir Kotomin
Faculty Publications – Finance, Insurance, and Law
Mutual fund advisers either expense the cost of research and other services or pay for them with soft dollars. This study is the first to use actual soft dollar and total brokerage commission figures for a large number of funds and to examine how soft dollars are linked to mutual fund governance. Employing a survivorship bias-free sample of actively managed US mutual funds, we find that higher soft dollar and total brokerage commissions are associated with higher advisory fees but not with higher risk-adjusted fund returns. These findings suggest that mutual fund shareholders, on average, do not benefit from the …
Essays On Empirical Asset Pricing, Mu-Shu Yun
Essays On Empirical Asset Pricing, Mu-Shu Yun
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This work contains three essays on empirical pricing. In the first essay, I propose to re-examine the evidence on mutual fund managers' illiquidity and volatility timing ability by using a holdings-based approach, which is free from the artificial timing bias occurred in the traditional return-based timing method. Through testing the timing evidence by the holdings approach, I am able to know to what degree the results in the literature are biased by no-information reasons. In the second essay, I investigate mutual fund managers' skills from their reactions to the observable market condition, which is a relatively overlooked dimension in the …
Essays In Corporate Equity Transactions, James David Kelly
Essays In Corporate Equity Transactions, James David Kelly
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation presents two essays dealing with corporate equity transactions. The first essay concerns an equity issuing transaction, the initial public offering (IPO), and specifically lockups, which restrict sales by pre-IPO shareholders. We improve upon the methodology for testing theory related to lockup length through the use of a multinomial logit as well as explore the reasons for and implications of multiple lockup agreements. We find that multiple lockups are associated with dual class equity structures, high book-to-market values, and more secondary shares offered. Offerings that include multiple lockups are more likely to deviate in (weighted average) length from the …
Determinants Of Industrial Property Rents In The Chicago Metropolitan Area, David E. Clark, Anthony Pennington-Cross
Determinants Of Industrial Property Rents In The Chicago Metropolitan Area, David E. Clark, Anthony Pennington-Cross
Finance Faculty Research and Publications
Urban economists have long understood the theoretical importance of transportation infrastructure and accessibility on the location choice of households and firms. We utilize a readily available data set of transaction rents in the Chicago metropolitan area to investigate the determinants of industrial property rents. Among the factors considered are proximity to transportation infrastructure, characteristics of the property, the term structure of lease agreements, and local attributes of the neighborhood. Empirical results suggest property, lease, and local demographics play important roles in determining rents. Despite the fact that industrial property tends to locate very close to rail lines and interstate highways, …
The Use Of Catastrophe Bonds As A Means Of Economic Development In Emerging Economies, Lauren Mattucci
The Use Of Catastrophe Bonds As A Means Of Economic Development In Emerging Economies, Lauren Mattucci
Honors Theses and Capstones
Catastrophe bonds offer a way for entities located in natural disaster prone regions to safely and efficiently transfer the risk of insuring property to the financial markets and subsequently, create a financially attractive environment for insurers and investors. The opportunity for investors to utilize modeled loss analytical platforms such as those created by AIR, Risk Management Solutions, and EQECAT, could be used to bridge the growing gap in emerging economies between economic losses created by natural disasters and insured losses. Bridging this insurance gap in emerging economies could have positive global implications for the insurance industry, global trade, foreign direct …
Information Exploitation? A Pre-Crisis Rmbs Issuer's Private Information, Darren Aiello
Information Exploitation? A Pre-Crisis Rmbs Issuer's Private Information, Darren Aiello
Faculty Publications
This paper describes an important borrower risk factor observed privately by the issuer of non-agency RMBS. The private information available to the issuer is drawn from behavioral cues exhibited early in the life of the loan. Mortgage borrowers that make their first six payments at least a day prior to the due date are 14.8 percentage points less likely to become delinquent (equivalent to a 91-point increase in FICO score). This effect is persistent, unobservable at loan origination, and privately observed by the issuer prior to securitization. Both the credit rating agencies and the investor do not appear to be …

Electric Vehicles In Ireland: The Past, The Present And The Future?, Emma Sadleir
Theses
This research is undertaken as part of the researcher’s efforts to achieve a Masters Degree in Business from Cork Institute of Technology. The research topic of Electric Vehicles in Ireland and the concentration on those vehicles exclusively or primarily powered by battery was prompted by interest and curiosity, but with a significant undertone of concern for the environment, all of which led to the research question: Electric Vehicles in Ireland: the past, the present, and the future?
It was not possible to start with a complete void and therefore initially assumptions were made, particularly that serious environmental damage arises from …
Sunlight Bylaws And Reciprocal Disclosures, Grace Lee Mead
Sunlight Bylaws And Reciprocal Disclosures, Grace Lee Mead
Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law
Publicly-traded companies have the power to pass sunlight bylaws to address hedge fund activism. Sunlight bylaws would require activist hedge funds to publicly disclose any strategic proposals and their financial interests in companies earlier and at thresholds lower than current securities laws. Sunlight bylaws would also require disclosure of additional information, including: (1) the percentage of the fund’s portfolio invested in the company; (2) the fund manager’s compensation; (3) the fund manager’s investment in the fund; (4) the fund’s portfolio turnover; and (5) the fund’s prior holding periods after any announcements of an ownership interest and a strategic proposal. Academic …
The Effects Of Corporate Social Responsibility On Financial Performance, Marly Mentor
The Effects Of Corporate Social Responsibility On Financial Performance, Marly Mentor
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Companies have taken the initiative to be socially responsible over the years. In the past, the focus for companies has been on maximizing wealth. With the growth of corporate social responsibility (CSR), there has been many debates regarding its benefits. More companies are beginning to realize the value of being socially responsible and how critical it is to business function. This paper researches past studies on the relationship between corporate social responsibility and financial performance. This relationship is then tested using a reliable source of data on corporate social responsibility performance. This study uniquely looks at the accounting and market-based …

Crummer Truist Portfolios
The most notable aspect of our strategy is an increase in bond holdings to 18% — the top of the range permitted by our investment policy statement. This defensive position assumes bonds will be low risk in a year of gently rising interest rates and because we see little upside in the stock market. For our tactical allocation, we added sector ETFs to each of our sectors to ensure diversification within sectors and limited the individual names to three per sector, allowing for more selectivity and in-depth research. We have tilted the portfolio towards consumer discretionary, consumer staples and telecommunications, …
Exploring Bank Managers' Strategies For Developing Millennials For Leadership Roles In Commercial Banks, Kenneth Morton
Exploring Bank Managers' Strategies For Developing Millennials For Leadership Roles In Commercial Banks, Kenneth Morton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Understanding strategies to prepare Millennials for leadership roles in commercial banks is critical to ensure organizational stability and success and to avoid knowledge gaps and leadership deficiencies created by large numbers of retiring Baby Boomers. Guided by learning network theory and generational theory, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies that 3 bank managers in North Carolina and South Carolina used to prepare Millennials for leadership. These 3 bank managers had a minimum of 2 years of experience leading teams of employees which included Millennials. The study included semistructured interviews to elicit detailed narratives from …

Scaling Up Your Story: An Experiment In Global Knowledge Sharing At The World Bank, Shad Morris, James B. Oldroyd, Sita Ramaswami
Faculty Publications
Timely and effective knowledge transfer is increasingly important in today’s technologically advanced global market. However, a myopic focus on efficiency has frequently rendered most organizational knowledge ineffective. By coupling technology with a formal system that captures informal stories in an engaging and entertaining way, actors within an organization may be more willing to listen to what geographically dispersed colleagues are doing, and may be more likely to ascribe value to that information. Focusing on the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group, we conducted interviews with those sharing and using knowledge, and performed content analyses of 175 knowledge-sharing narratives. …

A Background And Chronological Take On High Frequency Trading, Quinn H. Murray
A Background And Chronological Take On High Frequency Trading, Quinn H. Murray
Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze, in context of high frequency trading, potential market manipulation techniques (i.e. market making arbitrage, statistical arbitrage, market structure arbitrage, and directional strategies), and to review the subject from a chronological perspective from the 1960s onward, covering topics not limited to Regulation National Market System, the flash crash of May 6, 2010, and the August 24, 2015 market crash. To date, high frequency trading's effects on the United States market place have been well documented. This thesis will speculate about the true nature—whether adverse or beneficial-- of this fascinating, evolutionary, highly scrutinized topic.

Nigerian Banking Governance, Leadership Style, And Performance During The 2008-2009 Financial Crisis, Adeola Oluwayemi Agbato
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The 2008-2009 global financial crisis of financial systems negatively affected about 30% of Nigerian banks, leading to profitability issues. The profitability issues led to operational challenges, downsizing, and liquidation of some banks. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship between corporate governance structure, perception of leadership style, and bank performance. This study was grounded in agency theory and used survey and archival data. Survey data were collected from 11 participants employed by commercial banks located in Nigeria, using the Multifaceted Leadership Questionnaire. Corporate governance and bank performance data were collected from annual bank reports. The model …
Excess Corporate Cash And Mutual Fund Performance, Shay E. Richardson
Excess Corporate Cash And Mutual Fund Performance, Shay E. Richardson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Corporations may experience lower earnings on assets due to the underinvestment of excess cash. Specifically, leaders of nonfinancial firms hold small amounts of cash in mutual fund investments. The primary benefit to understanding mutual funds is the potential to use them to manage excess corporate cash. Using the efficient market hypothesis as a framework for the study, the purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship among mutual fund expenses including 12b-1 fees, sales load at purchase, management fees, total capitalization, and performance. Secondary research databases were used, including the Steele Mutual Fund Expert and the U.S. Securities …
An Analysis Of Investments By Multilateral Development Banks In Central America, Jose Lopez Rojas
An Analysis Of Investments By Multilateral Development Banks In Central America, Jose Lopez Rojas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Multilateral development banks (MDBs) are under increased pressure to justify their allocation of donor resources. These funds help produce growth in developing regions such as Central America (CA), where wealth inequality limits individuals' access to basic services and increases the prevalence of crime and corruption. MDB leaders are not always confident the allocation of limited resources creates optimal value. The capital asset price model (CAPM) was the theoretical framework of this correlational study. Archival data consisting of annual reports and audited financial statements were used to draw a sample (N = 66) of USD $4.857-asset valued loans made by MDBs …
A Resource-Based Perspective On Financial Resource Strategies For Small Business Sustainability, Margaret N. Godwin-Opara
A Resource-Based Perspective On Financial Resource Strategies For Small Business Sustainability, Margaret N. Godwin-Opara
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Each year entrepreneurs start many new businesses, and some of these businesses will fail within the first 2 years. In addition, many owners will cite lack of adequate financial resources as a contributory factor to the failure. The purpose of this multiple case study was to identify the strategies that some small business owners used to obtain financial resources needed to operate a financially sustainable business. The population consisted of machine shops in South Central Kansas. A resource-based view theory served as the conceptual framework that grounded the study. The data collection process consisted of 9 interview questions. The data …
The Effect Of Regulations On The Bottom-Line Of Traditional And Shadow Banks, Tsatsu Emmanuel Nyamadi
The Effect Of Regulations On The Bottom-Line Of Traditional And Shadow Banks, Tsatsu Emmanuel Nyamadi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Return on equity is often associated with prudent risk-taking and the attraction of new clients in advanced economies like the United States, where shadow banks are not regulated. Researchers have contended that freedom from regulation encourages risk-taking and earning of higher profits, but there is a lack of empirical evidence addressing this relationship. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate whether lack of regulations result in increased return on equity. The theoretical framework was regulatory arbitrage by Ricks M, Gennaioli N, Shleifer A, and Vishny R. The research question addressed the relationship between regulation, profit margin, leverage, asset …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Financial Literacy At The University Of Mississippi, Paul Jackson Gunn
Honors Theses
This thesis examines why financial literacy is important and what factors can influence students' financial literacy at the University of Mississippi. Financial literacy is important and can affect many aspects of life, whether it is political, financial, educational or personal. Students enrolled in EDHE 105 participated in the multiple-choice survey, which included socioeconomic, demographic and financial literacy questions. Participants' answers were analyzed using four statistical models: ordinary least squares regression, univariate analysis or means by differences analysis, interactions and probit analysis. The study found that the average score, 2.02 out of five, to the financial literacy quiz for all participants …

A Sustainability-Based Project Selection Algorithm: Socio-Technical-Economic Project Selection (Steps) Algorithm, Bharathi Bhattu
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Multi-dimensional aspects play a vital role in the task of project-decision making. Environmental effects are to be considered in addition to other technical and non-technical aspects in order to avoid undue environmental damage. This current work introduces a new decision-making algorithm (Socio-Technical-Economic Project Selection or STEPS) that is demonstrated with the use of RCA (recycled concrete aggregate) as riprap for slope stabilization and erosion control which leaches chemical arsenic when in contact with water. Arsenic has long been recognized for its lethal properties. The main intention of introducing this new algorithm is to use sustainability concepts of social, technical, and …
The Effect Of A Risk-Based Deposit Insurance Program In Korea, Youngil Oh
The Effect Of A Risk-Based Deposit Insurance Program In Korea, Youngil Oh
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Countries introduce a deposit insurance system to prevent bank-run and stabilize the financial market by protecting depositors. However, deposit insurance with a flat-rate system induces the insured banks to take more risky activities, an example of moral hazard. To deal with this problem, the Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation ('KDIC') adopted a Risk-Based Insurance Program ('RBIP ') for the Savings Banks ('SBs') on July 1, 2013, by charging a higher rate for the weak SB s and a lower rate for the healthy SBs. To mitigate the initial drastic impact on the SBs in an economic regression, the KDIC had reduced …
Comparison Of Option Price From Black-Scholes Model To Actual Values, Matthew J. Krznaric
Comparison Of Option Price From Black-Scholes Model To Actual Values, Matthew J. Krznaric
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The Black-Scholes model is a widely used method for pricing European-style options in a straightforward way, through the use of calculations and ideal market assumptions. Due to certain unrealistic ideal conditions exercised by the model, The Black-Scholes technique of pricing options may not be entirely accurate in implementation. This paper addresses these problems due to the model limitations, determining how The Black-Scholes method compares to the results when using the actual data. Using a mix of historical S&P500 data and generated normal distributions, we first calculated and graphed option prices through the Black-Scholes formulas. With the help of R, we …

Diversification And Market Neutral Portfolios In S&P500, Alan S. Agnew
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Our goal is to investigate strategies to deal with the risks associated with holding asset in the stock market. We first deal with risk of holding a specific stock, by the use of diversification. Later, we’ll attempt to deal with the market risk, which is the risk of entire market going up and down. Data used in this project comes from daily adjusted closing price of stocks listed in the S&P500 index ranging from January 3rd, 2000 to December 31st, 2015 and the data is processed using statistical software R.

Financial Decision-Making And The Normalization Of Deviance, Dilata Ranadive
Financial Decision-Making And The Normalization Of Deviance, Dilata Ranadive
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Two perspectives have dominated the discourse on the causes of the financial crisis of 2008. The first attributes the financial crisis to intentionally malevolent behaviors, whereas the second attributes it to the natural market fluctuations. However, there is still a third, possible perspective. While the first two perspectives focus on the intention of the actors, the third perspective focuses on the response of the observers. This is what Vaughan (1996) refers to as "normalization of deviance". In normalization of deviance actions or decisions that are initially regarded as aberrant or atypical are re-conceptualized and adopted as the new criterion. The …

Product Market Competition, Corporate Investments And Risk, Hussein Ali Ahmad Abdoh
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This doctoral Dissertation examines the impact of product market competition on the cash flow investments and risk. The Dissertation is comprised of three essays. First essay investigates the link between a firm's competitive environment and the ratio of idiosyncratic volatility to systematic volatility. I postulate that competition has a higher effect on idiosyncratic volatility than the systematic volatility for two reasons. First, market power works as a tool that passes on firm-specific cost shocks to customers but is irrelevant to passing on the industry-wide cost shocks. Second, firm's competitive advantage relative to its peers in the industry is affected by …

Uncertainty and risk are inherent features of investing in mineral exploration ventures. Investors rely on qualitative and quantitative analysis to evaluate risk of capital. The distinction between risk and uncertainty pertaining to mineral exploration is that risk is an opportunity for loss and uncertainty can be described as the range of probabilities that some condition may occur (Rose, 1987). Stakeholders rely on a combination of investment conferences, risk analysis equations, press releases, financial reports, and investment research to determine if an investment potential. J. M. Cozzolini developed a formula for Risk Adjusted Value (RAV) of an exploration venture. The study …

In my first essay, I investigate changes in a number of firm characteristics surrounding the change in debt policy (i.e., becoming unlevered). I do so to investigate why firms may lower their debt levels, and add insights to the zero-leverage puzzle. My main findings are that tax based explanations and market timing explanations do not explain the observed behavior of firms that become totally unlevered. My findings are most consistent with the pecking order theory (Myers and Majluf, 1984) and with Jensen's (1986) theory of free cash flows. I also investigate whether financial constraint is somehow related to the decision …
Ceo Ownership And Firm Performance: Evidence From The 2003 Dividend Tax Cut, Hong Kim Duong
Ceo Ownership And Firm Performance: Evidence From The 2003 Dividend Tax Cut, Hong Kim Duong
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This study investigates whether and how CEO ownership impacts firm performance by using the large tax cut on individual dividend income enacted in 2003 (The 2003 Dividend Tax Cut) as an exogenous shock. My findings suggest that CEO ownership of dividend payers significantly increased after the shock in the form of higher annual restricted stock grants and more option exercises. I document that the change in CEO ownership has an asymmetric impact on firm performance and investment efficiency. Only dividend payers with CEOs who moved closer to optimal ownership experienced improvement in investment efficiency and performance. In contrast, dividend payers …
The Dimensions Of Customer Satisfaction In The Jamaican Financial Service Industry, Dr. Lydia Smith
The Dimensions Of Customer Satisfaction In The Jamaican Financial Service Industry, Dr. Lydia Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Bank leaders spend an average of $727 to acquire a new customer and $287 to retain current customers. Grounded in customer relationship management and adaptation level theories, the purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship between service quality and customers' intention to switch banking service. An online survey was administered to 203 Jamaican banking customers. The target population was selected to identify if the Jamaican banks' customer service adhered to the customer satisfaction principles developed by Parasuraman. The independent variables were the 10 dimensions of service quality. Competence, courtesy, credibility, and access were removed because of multicollinearity …
