Analysis Of Food Demand Elasticity Of Rice For The Poor In Aceh, Indonesia: An Almost Ideal Demand System Approach, -- Suriani, Diana Sapha A.H, Cut Zakia Rizki
Analysis Of Food Demand Elasticity Of Rice For The Poor In Aceh, Indonesia: An Almost Ideal Demand System Approach, -- Suriani, Diana Sapha A.H, Cut Zakia Rizki
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The purpose of this study is to empirically explore the effect of rice for the poor (Raskin) or subsidized rice consumption on the food demands elasticity of poor households. The study utilizes the primary data collected in 2015 based on the purposive sampling method for establishing the homogeneity characteristics of Raskin beneficiary’s households. An Almost Ideal Demand System approach is adopted to measure the proportion of food commodities expenditure of the poor and the demand elasticity as well as their responses to the income elasticity. Additionally, the correlation analysis is utilized to investigate the relationship between the selected socioeconomic variables …
Mlb Rule Iv Draft: Valuing Draft Pick Slots, Anthony Cacchione
Mlb Rule Iv Draft: Valuing Draft Pick Slots, Anthony Cacchione
Dissertations and Theses
This study explored the Net Present Value (NPV) in dollar terms of draft pick slots in the Major League Rule IV Draft. In order to accomplish this, the cumulative performance of players selected in each slot within the draft was evaluated and brought to the Present Value of the time they were selected using a discount rate. The performance of the players was determined using the baseball-reference Wins Above Replacement (WAR) metric. It is intuitive that earlier draft picks are the most valuable; however, it is unclear how quickly the value of draft picks decline. This research demonstrates that the …

The Dogs Of The Dow Strategy Applied To The S&P 500, Autumn Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
The Dogs of the Dow trading strategy popular strategy that invests in the ten stocks with the highest dividend yield in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. We examine a newer variation of this strategy that involves investing in the five highest dividend yield stocks from each sector of the S&P 500. We compare returns of this this strategy to those of the Dogs of the Dow and to those of the S&P 500. We find that this strategy has higher raw returns than both the Dogs of the Dow and S&P.
The Effects Of Positive And Negative Environmental Responsibility On Financial Performance, Anna Gurr
The Effects Of Positive And Negative Environmental Responsibility On Financial Performance, Anna Gurr
CMC Senior Theses
As environmental responsibility (ER) gains momentum in the corporate and stakeholder world, it is imperative to understand the relationship between ER and financial performance. While there is prior research looking at this relationship, this study provides further insight into the specific effects of negative and positive ER. In addition, it looks over the years 2008-2011 having implications for companies about the effects of their ER even through financial hardships. This study uses a widely respected corporate social responsibility database, in which ER scores were separated from. In this study, 287 firms in the S&P 500 are examined through times-series regression …
Returns To Buying Winners And Selling Losers: A Look At Cryptocurrencies, Daniel Walker
Returns To Buying Winners And Selling Losers: A Look At Cryptocurrencies, Daniel Walker
CMC Senior Theses
This paper is, to my knowledge, one of the first ever to examine the effectiveness of price momentum trading strategies applied to cryptocurrencies. Using aggregate OHLCV (Open, High, Low, Close, Volume) data on cryptocurrency pairs from Poloniex, Bittrex, and Bitfinex, I apply Jegadeesh and Titman’s classic -month/-month momentum trading strategy, reporting annual returns with and without incorporating trading fees. Portfolios are resampled daily, weekly, and monthly, testing lookback and holding periods ranging from one day to one year. The results show that trading cryptocurrencies using momentum strategies derives returns that rapidly increase the more often portfolios are resampled, with the …
The Effects Of Bringing An Nba Franchise To A City On Employment: A Case Study Of Memphis, Oklahoma City, Orlando, Sacramento, And Salt Lake City, Ravi Shah
CMC Senior Theses
This paper utilizes a case study approach to explain the impact of having a franchise from the National Basketball Association (NBA) move to a city where a team from the four major American sports league had not existed on employment levels. This paper utilizes the synthetic control method to examine employment in Memphis, Oklahoma City, Orlando, Sacramento, and Salt Lake City. Applying the synthetic control method, this paper finds that employment is not impacted positively as the stadium proposals suggest they will when putting forth subsidy bids. Due to the large costs imposed on taxpayers as a result of the …
Institutional Ownership In Relation To The Mandatory Audit Firm Rotation Rule And Its Effect On Audit Quality, Latisha Shah
Institutional Ownership In Relation To The Mandatory Audit Firm Rotation Rule And Its Effect On Audit Quality, Latisha Shah
CMC Senior Theses
Previous studies have concluded that mandatory audit firm rotation (MAFR) has not been successful in controlling the outcomes of the auditor-client relationship. Additionally, the literature concludes that high institutional ownership enhances audit quality through monitoring the management-auditor relationship. This paper hypothesizes that better corporate governance in terms of high institutional ownership percentage will enhance audit quality during a MAFR regime. Since countries that have implemented MAFR in the past have their data in their local languages, I use the special case of Arthur Andersen clients based in the US as my treatment group. I carry out a descriptive statistical analysis …
The Effect Of Mandatory Adoption Of Ifrs On Transparency For Investors, Crystal Anderson
The Effect Of Mandatory Adoption Of Ifrs On Transparency For Investors, Crystal Anderson
CMC Senior Theses
This paper examines the effect of the mandatory adoption of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) on transparency for investors by measuring the increase in earnings management during the post-adoption period of IFRS. One sign of earnings management is current year earnings being only slightly higher than the previous year’s earnings. An increase in earnings management means a decrease in accounting quality and a decrease of transparency for investors. By comparing firms that mandatorily adopted IFRS to similar benchmark firms in terms of strength of legal enforcement, book-to-market ratios, market values and net incomes, I am able to run empirical …
The Balance Between Financial And Quality Performance In For-Profit Hospitals Versus Non-Profit Hospitals, Blake Seidner
The Balance Between Financial And Quality Performance In For-Profit Hospitals Versus Non-Profit Hospitals, Blake Seidner
CMC Senior Theses
Recent trends of financial distress for non-profit hospitals and the uptick in acquisition of these hospitals by for-profit entities indicate different focuses from the management of each type of hospital. Using data on hospital quality and basic financial measures, this study examines shift in the balance of financial and quality performance. The dataset focuses on private non-profit and for-profit hospitals with low bed counts, ranging from 50-200 total beds. Results indicate a positive relationship between for-profit status and basic financial performance measures, such as profitability, and a negative relationship with patient experience, cost reduction for the patient, and overall quality. …
A Smart Beta Approach To Fama-French And Profitability, Joseph Malgesini
A Smart Beta Approach To Fama-French And Profitability, Joseph Malgesini
CMC Senior Theses
The Fama and French five-factor model is molded into a smart beta investment strategy with strong exposure to the profitability factor. This constructed portfolio outperforms the market significantly despite an unintentional negative correlation with profitability that can be attributed to the intra-factor return correlations. The second portfolio, constructed by investing directly in profitability as represented by gross profit over total assets, outperforms both the market and the first portfolio.
Microfinance: Combating World Poverty One Small Business At A Time, Alison Basney
Microfinance: Combating World Poverty One Small Business At A Time, Alison Basney
Senior Honors Theses
Poverty is a major problem that reaches millions of people around the world. Although many organizations and individuals work daily to combat this, much of the work done to reduce poverty lacks sustainability and serves only to remedy to the effects of poverty, rather than create a solution to the causes of poverty. Microfinance can be very basically defined as the provision of banking to the impoverished who would not otherwise have access to these services. This purpose of this thesis is to show that microfinance is the ideal solution to the poverty problem by using research and evidence from …
Public Ownership And The Local Economy, Jess Cornaggia, Matthew Gustafson, Jason Kotter, Kevin Pisciotta
Public Ownership And The Local Economy, Jess Cornaggia, Matthew Gustafson, Jason Kotter, Kevin Pisciotta
Faculty Publications
We provide evidence that a firm’s transition from private to public ownership stunts local economic growth, especially in less populated and poorer areas. After accounting for endogeneity in the ownership decision, areas hosting companies that go public experience muted growth in employment, establishments, population, and wages, relative to areas where firms file to go public and remain private. Establishment-level analyses reveal that transitioning to public ownership causes firms to geographically diversify their establishments and employee base. These findings are consistent with public ownership reducing a firm’s reliance on local agglomeration economies, to the detriment of the local community.
Comparables Pricing, Justin Murfin, Ryan Pratt
Comparables Pricing, Justin Murfin, Ryan Pratt
Faculty Publications
Finance professionals commonly set prices based on the analysis of recently closed, comparable transactions. Using data on syndicated loans, we exploit the lag between loans’ closing dates and their inclusion in a widely used comparables database to identify the effect of past transactions on new transaction pricing. Comparables pricing is an important determinant of individual loan spreads, but a failure to account for overlap in information across loans leads to pricing mistakes. Comparables used repeatedly are overweighted as they develop redundant channels of influence on later transactions. Market conditions prevailing at the time a comparable was priced also unduly influence …
Credit Supply And The Rise In College Tuition: Evidence From The Expansion In Federal Student Aid Programs, David O. Lucca, Taylor Nadauld, Karen Shen
Credit Supply And The Rise In College Tuition: Evidence From The Expansion In Federal Student Aid Programs, David O. Lucca, Taylor Nadauld, Karen Shen
Faculty Publications
We study the link between the student credit expansion of the past 15 years and the contemporaneous rise in college tuition. To disentangle simultaneity issues, we analyze the effects of increases in federal student loan caps using detailed student-level financial data. We find a pass-through effect on tuition of changes in subsidized loan maximums of about 60 cents on the dollar and of about 20 cents on the dollar for unsubsidized federal loans. The effect is most pronounced for more expensive degrees and degrees offered by for-profit and 2-year institutions.

Private Equity Indices Based On Secondary Market Transactions, Brian Boyer, Taylor D. Nadauld, Keith Vorkink, Michael S. Weisbach
Faculty Publications
Measuring the performance of private equity investments (buyout and venture) has historically only been possible over long horizons because the IRR on a fund is only observable following the fund’s final distribution. We propose a new approach to evaluating performance using actual prices paid for limited partner shares of funds in secondary markets. We construct indices of buyout and venture capital performance using a proprietary database of secondary market prices between 2006 and 2017. These transaction-based indices exhibit significantly higher betas and volatilities, and lower alphas than NAV-based indices built from Preqin and obtained from Burgiss. There are a number …
The Capitalization Of Consumer Financing Into Durable Goods Prices, Bronson Argyle, Taylor Nadauld, Christopher Palmer, Ryan Pratt
The Capitalization Of Consumer Financing Into Durable Goods Prices, Bronson Argyle, Taylor Nadauld, Christopher Palmer, Ryan Pratt

Using loan-level data on millions of used-car transactions across hundreds of lenders, we study the consumer response to exogenous variation in credit terms. Borrowers offered shorter maturity decrease expenditures enough to o set 60-90% of the monthly payment increase. Most of this is driven by shifting toward lower quality cars, but affected borrowers are able to o set 20-30% of a monthly payment shock by negotiating lower prices for equivalent cars. Our results suggest that durable goods prices adjust to reflect credit terms even at the individual level, with one year of additional loan maturity increasing a given car’s price …
Get In Line: Chapter 11 Restructuring In Crowded Bankruptcy Courts, Benjamin Iverson
Get In Line: Chapter 11 Restructuring In Crowded Bankruptcy Courts, Benjamin Iverson
Faculty Publications
Bankruptcy costs depend not only on the laws that govern financial distress but also on the ability of the court to rehabilitate distressed firms. This paper tests whether Chapter 11 restructuring outcomes are affected by time constraints in busy bankruptcy courts. Using the passage of the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act as an exogenous shock to caseloads, I find that commercial banks report lower charge-offs on business lending when court caseloads decline, suggesting that the costs of financial distress are lower in less-congested courts. Further, court caseload affects how restructuring takes place. Less-busy bankruptcy judges liquidate fewer small …
Trade Creditors' Information Advantage, Victoria Ivashina, Benjamin Iverson
Trade Creditors' Information Advantage, Victoria Ivashina, Benjamin Iverson
Faculty Publications
Using information on the sales of debt claims for 132 U.S. Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases, we show that large trade creditors’ decisions to sell receivables of a distressed company in bankruptcy are predictive of lower recovery rates, and that in such cases these creditors sell ahead of less informed suppliers and other creditors. This result is especially pronounced for more opaque distressed firms, when trade creditors’ information advantage is likely largest. This evidence shows that suppliers that extend significant amounts of trade credit hold private information about their trade partners. Trade creditors who are geographically closer or in similar industries …
Long-Run Linkages Of Asean+3 Floating Currencies, Cesar C. Rufino
Long-Run Linkages Of Asean+3 Floating Currencies, Cesar C. Rufino
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The extent with which currencies of the expanded ASEAN grouping commonly known as the ASEAN+3 have attained long-run currency linkages—an important requisite for an eventual monetary integration—is the main focus of this study. High-frequency interbank call rates (nominal exchange rate vis-à-vis the US dollar) data on seven floating currencies of the region with sufficient historical time series covering the period of 1998 to 2012 (weekly: January 7, 1998, to December 26, 2012—average of bid and ask rates on Wednesdays) constitute the primary database of the study. The goal is to establish through cutting-edge econometric procedures three crucial outcomes: the bilateral …

Asean Bond Market Integration: What Drives Cross-Border Bond Investment In Asean?, Angelo Taningco
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Bond market integration in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) appears to be relatively low or weak especially in terms of intraregional bond investment despite the robust growth in bond market size in recent years and policy initiatives in support of developing bond markets in the region. This paper aims to contribute to the literature on ASEAN financial integration by providing empirical evidence and policy insights on what can help boost intra-ASEAN bond investment. Using panel regression following a gravity model framework and spanning five major ASEAN member countries—Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand—over the 2001–2014 period, this …

Is A Regional Credit Rating Agency For The Asean Feasible?, Tereso S. Tullao Jr, Christopher James R. Cabuay,, Daniel S. Hofileña
DLSU Business & Economics Review
In the spirit of deepening the bond markets of the ASEAN+3 region, as well as addressing the inadequacies put forth by the underrating of bonds by global credit rating agencies (GCRAs) and their lack of recognition of domestic CRAs’ (DCRAs) ratings, we look into the feasibility of a regional CRA (RCRA). Establishing an RCRA is faced with hurdles related to institutional and reputational constraints, mechanisms of information exchange, compatibility of financial reports, operational limitations, governance structure, and regulatory frameworks. In this light, we provide a brief discussion on potential alternatives such as the credit ratings initiative of the National University …
Testing The Assumptions Of Slippery Slope Framework On Tax Compliance: Evidence From Nigerian Smes, Augustine Ayuba, Natrah Saad, Zaimah Zainol Ariffin
Testing The Assumptions Of Slippery Slope Framework On Tax Compliance: Evidence From Nigerian Smes, Augustine Ayuba, Natrah Saad, Zaimah Zainol Ariffin
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This paper integrates the assumptions of the Slippery Slope Framework in explaining the tax compliance of small and medium enterprises. This study tests these assumptions in relation to SMEs taxpayers to further reestablish the applicability of the framework with different kinds of taxpayers. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS – SEM) further supported the framework in analyzing the data of this study. The findings reveal that perceived corruption along with perceived service orientation strongly interact each other in expounding the paradox surrounding tax compliance.
Anticipation And Reaction To Going Concern Modified Audit Opinions By Sophisticated Investors, Marshall A. Geiger, Abdullah Kumas
Anticipation And Reaction To Going Concern Modified Audit Opinions By Sophisticated Investors, Marshall A. Geiger, Abdullah Kumas
Accounting Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is to examine whether institutional investors (i) anticipate a distressed firm's receipt of a first‐time going‐concern modified audit opinion, and (ii) react to a first‐time going‐concern modified opinion by engaging in abnormal net selling of firm shares. Using a proprietary database of US institutional investor trades, we find that institutional investors are net sellers of first‐time going‐concern opinion firms beginning 6 months before the release of the report and remain net sellers through the subsequent 3 months. We also find that the severity of the reasons auditors modify their opinions is associated with increased trading …

Potential Vs. Realized Savings Under Automatic Enrollment, John Beshears, James J. Choi, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian
Faculty Publications
Employer adoption of automatic enrollment can dramatically increase retirement savings plan participation. However, many savings plan participants withdraw some, or even all, of their accumulated balances prior to reaching retirement. The extent to which individuals’ preretirement withdrawal decisions, sometimes months or even years after they have been automatically enrolled, offset the increased savings induced by automatic enrollment is an open question. We explore this issue by studying the evolution of retirement savings outcomes over time for the employees at a large firm that introduced automatic enrollment in 2005. Comparing employees hired in the 12 months after the introduction of automatic …

Improving Access Of Small Business Owners To Microloan From Microfinance Institutions In Nigeria, Hyeladzira Mshelia Ochonogor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract
Most microloan applicants in Nigeria are denied access to financial services by the commercial banks because of the high risk involved in granting loans to an individual without tangible assets to offer as collateral. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore small business owners' understanding of suitable funding options from microfinance banks in Nigeria to sustain their businesses beyond the first 5 years. An investigation was conducted on how small business owners could obtain information on funding options most suitable to sustain their business. Guided by the ethical banking operations framework theory, the strategies business …
Financial Crowding Out Of Ghanaian Private Sector Corporations, Andrews Kwablah
Financial Crowding Out Of Ghanaian Private Sector Corporations, Andrews Kwablah
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The government of Ghana borrows from both domestic and foreign sources to finance the budget deficit. By the year 2013, the domestic debt was 55% of the public debt. Government domestic borrowing is competitive and can potentially crowd out the private corporate sector. Therefore, the specific research problem addressed in this study was whether the Ghanaian government's domestic debt (DEBT) caused financial crowding out (FCO) in Ghana. FCO theory is not conclusive and not proven specifically for Ghana, so the purpose of this research was to investigate its presence in Ghana. The neoclassical theory of FCO underpinned the research. The …

In the United States, 20% of newly established small businesses, including small
businesses in the life insurance industry, fail within 2 years, and over 50% of them fail during the first 5 years. The purpose of this multiple case study was to identify and explore the strategies that life insurance brokerage owners use to sustain business operations beyond 5 years. Porter's 5 forces model served as the conceptual framework for exploring this subject matter. Owners of 3 separate small life insurance brokerage firms in Texas, who sustained their businesses beyond 5 years, participated in semistructured interviews. A secondary source of …

Undercapitalization is a major impediment for the growth and survival of Canadian life sciences firms. Proficient management teams are the 'sine qua non' criteria in the venture capital decision-making processes. The purpose of this multicase study was to explore strategies successful venture capitalists use to improve their evaluation processes of life sciences management teams' drug development capabilities. The conceptual framework for this study was based on business process management. The purposeful sample consisted of 10 venture capitalists located in the United States and Canada who had expertise evaluating life sciences management teams. The data were triangulated from semistructured interviews, annual …

Equity Trading Evaluation Strategies In Switzerland After The European Mifid Ii, Linn Kristina Karstadt
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Swiss bank traders are affected by technological and regulatory challenges, which may affect their broker voting process and may result in a change of trading and evaluation behavior in 2018. Compounded challenges exist when broker evaluation strategies are not effective or Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) II compliant. This qualitative, single case study, built on efficient capital market hypothesis and innovative disruption theory, was focused on effective broker evaluation strategies after MiFID II in Switzerland. The sample consisted of 4 buy-side traders, who shared their unique perspectives. Methodological triangulation was achieved through semistructured interviews, a review of the institution's …
