Cointegration And Statistical Arbitrage Of Precious Metals, Judge Van Horn May 2021

Cointegration And Statistical Arbitrage Of Precious Metals, Judge Van Horn

Finance Undergraduate Honors Theses

When talking about financial instruments correlation is often thrown around as a measure of the relation between two securities. An often more useful or tradeable measure is cointegration. Cointegration is the measure of two securities tendency to revert to an average price over time. In other words, cointegration ignores directionality and only cares about the distance between two securities. For a mean reversion strategy such as statistical arbitrage cointegration proves to be a far more reliable statistical measure of mean reversion, and while it is more reliable than correlation it still has its own problems. One thing to consider is …

Insider Trading As A Precursor To Modern Business Ethics, Robyn Coleman May 2021

Insider Trading As A Precursor To Modern Business Ethics, Robyn Coleman

Finance Undergraduate Honors Theses

There has been a recent change in business that there is more focus on the “stakeholder approach” than shareholder primacy. This can be attributed to the early actions and illegality of insider trading that expected a step beyond a solely economic approach. This attitude was then replicated to become what we see as the modern business approach. Business now includes ethical investing, environmental focus, corporate citizenship, and emphasis on multiple stakeholders that was not always there. Companies have embraced this position while others have been criticized for not doing so. As this approach develops and changes, it will be enlightening …

On The Cash Holdings Of Corporate Bond Mutual Funds, Andrew Punnoose May 2021

On The Cash Holdings Of Corporate Bond Mutual Funds, Andrew Punnoose

Financial Analyst

In this research, I examine the impact of cash holdings on the risk and returns of U.S. corporate bond mutual funds. Using a sample of 1,672 corporate bond funds during 2002-2019, I find that higher cash holdings are significantly associated with lower risk-adjusted returns and lower total and idiosyncratic volatilities of corporate bond funds. Further analysis suggests that these results are mainly driven by non-crisis periods when cash holdings might adversely impact the alpha of corporate bond mutual funds while reducing risk for these funds. During the crisis periods, however, we do not document a negative relation between cash holdings …

An Exploration Of The Impact Of Economic Recessions On The S&P 500 And Its Sectors, Weston Sizemore

Finance Undergraduate Honors Theses

The Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) is a method of predicting future stock prices based on past returns. Specific areas of CAPM analysis utilize regression analysis to accomplish this goal. Historic prices and returns for a specific stock in a company, or even whole sectors of the economy, are compared with the corresponding returns for the market. There have been several historical recessions in United States history, as well as a current, ongoing recession. These recessions, along with their causes and effects, will be discussed extensively in this paper. This paper utilizes an analysis of the Capital Asset Pricing Model …

In relation to the same, the question that is raised is “can economic growth promotes political stability?” This research is purposely designed to be qualitative to facilitate the investigation of the source of poverty and its relation to political instability. Central Appalachia Severance Taxation And Policies For Future Economic Growth, Nathan Frisbie May 2021

Central Appalachia Severance Taxation And Policies For Future Economic Growth, Nathan Frisbie

Honors Theses

Central Appalachia is a region in the United States that has been referred to as a paradox by researchers who have studied it. The area is rich with natural resources, yet the region lacks economic development. The mineral extraction industry has been the center of the economy for over a hundred years. The reliance on the industry has caused Central Appalachia to fall behind in several categories. The region has unusually high concentrations of poverty and low high school graduation rates. The revenue from the taxation of coal is the primary source of income for many of the rural counties. …

Hedge Fund Performance With The Treynor-Black Model, Gurkamal S. Pannu May 2021

Hedge Fund Performance With The Treynor-Black Model, Gurkamal S. Pannu

Honors Theses

This paper seeks to analyze the information ratio differences between long/short hedge funds over the past two decades using the Treynor-Black model. The Treynor-Black model is a method to derive an optimal portfolio allocation across safe and risky assets, based off of expected alphas of active investments and the unsystematic volatility that can be attributed to each given security. We first developed and implemented a model to forecast information ratios on a database of long/short hedge funds. With the predicted information ratios, we calculated out-of-sample allocation weights from a Treynor-Black active portfolio model. These weights were then tested in a …

Short Selling Around Reverse Stock Splits, Ryan Voges May 2021

Short Selling Around Reverse Stock Splits, Ryan Voges

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

I examine whether short selling increases around reverse stock splits using 2019 daily short selling data instead of bimonthly short interest data required by FINRA. In my difference-in-difference analysis, I find that average short selling increases significantly for firms that reverse split their stock, relative to matched control firms that do not, around the split dates. I also find that firms that reverse split their stock experience negative cumulative abnormal returns in the 20-day period after the reverse stock splits, particularly for those firms that are heavily shorted. These results are in agreeance with existent literature and suggest that short …

Essays On The Financial Implications Of Economically Linked Firms, Chao Wei May 2021

Essays On The Financial Implications Of Economically Linked Firms, Chao Wei

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This Dissertation consists of two topics on the financial implications of economically linked firms. The Chapter 1 examines the impact of supply chain concentration on purchasing firm's financing costs. I find that purchasing firms engaging in less concentrated supply chain structure are subject to higher risk and cost of equity. This effect is more pronounced when the supplier's financial performance deteriorates or when the purchasing firmâ??s purchase demand is large. I also provide evidence that lower supply chain concentration increases purchasing firm's cost of debt. Lenders charge higher interests on the corporate loans as their compensation for the additional risk …

Three Essays On The Performance Evaluation Of Actively Managed Investment Funds, Qing Yan May 2021

Three Essays On The Performance Evaluation Of Actively Managed Investment Funds, Qing Yan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the performance of hedge funds and actively managed U.S. equity mutual funds.

The first chapter examines the relation between hedge funds and the low beta anomaly. Different conditions in the mutual fund and hedge fund industries should lead to different approaches with respect to the low beta anomaly. I find that, unlike most mutual funds, the average hedge fund tends to benefit considerably from the anomaly. About 2.3% per year of apparent alpha for the average hedge fund can be attributed to the low beta anomaly rather than manager skill. Low skill managers are the most reliant …

Internal Capital Markets And Return Predictability In Complex Ownership Firms, Angelica Gonzalez, Sergei Sarkissian, Jun Tu, Ran Zhang May 2021

Internal Capital Markets And Return Predictability In Complex Ownership Firms, Angelica Gonzalez, Sergei Sarkissian, Jun Tu, Ran Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Using global cross-ownership data, we find return predictability for four possible cases in ownership-linked firms (OLFs): subsidiary−parent, parent−subsidiary, subsidiary−subsidiary, and parent−parent. A long/short portfolio strategy sorted by the lagged monthly returns of OLFs yields the monthly Fama-French six-factor alpha of 79−113 bps. These results, which are observed only after the establishment of ownership links, are not subsumed by industry or cross-country momentums or by alternative inter-firm relations, including customer−supplier links, strategic alliances, common boards, and shared analyst coverage. The OLF return predictability is best explained by active internal capital markets—a mechanism unique to firms with a complex ownership network.

Do Students Buy Attention-Grabbing Stocks? A Field Experiment, George Psaradakis Apr 2021

Do Students Buy Attention-Grabbing Stocks? A Field Experiment, George Psaradakis

Business and Economics Honors Papers

In this paper, we look to find out whether or not student investors are drawn to “attention-grabbing” stocks. We define “attention-grabbing” stocks as those that are issued by companies with either large numbers of Twitter followers, large general marketing budgets, or both. Our theory is that the more followers that a publicly traded company has on Twitter and/or the more money the company spends on marketing and advertising, the more likely a student would be to invest in its stock.

A field experiment was conducted in which undergraduate students constructed their own virtual stock portfolios. A treatment group was given …

A performance-flow relationship exists across both active and passive funds. …

With the growing age of the tech economy, post housing crash financial market, and unprecedented challenges like a global pandemic with a death toll in the millions, major financial institutions in the United States have been forced to reconsider many aspects of the old ways of doing things. The most influential institution in the U.S., the Federal Reserve (the Fed), has become more involved with the financial markets over the past several decades. Using a sample of 134 publicly-traded companies, I analyzed variables to assess the effects of the Fed’s new influence on market expectations from the past ten years. …

Zachary Taylor joined the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (FRBNY) in January 2009 to lead the team responsible for managing and unwinding the central bank’s Maiden Lane II and III portfolios, which were acquired in connection with the intervention to assist American International Group (AIG). Taylor later took over responsibility for the Maiden Lane portfolio consisting of former Bear Stearns assets as well as the unwinding of the Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility (TALF), another crisis-era program. All told, those portfolios amounted to more than $140 billion in residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS), collateralized debt obligations (CDO), credit default …
