JOHNSON CITY – In partnership with East Tennessee State University’s Sport Management Program, Bristol Motor Speedway will host a “Breaking Into Sports” event later this month. 

“This networking event benefits both students and organizations,” said Dr. Amanda “Amy” Greene, associate professor of sport management in the Department of Sport, Exercise, Recreation and Kinesiology. “Providing students an opportunity to get out of the classroom and meet professionals is a vital part of building connections within the sport industry.”

JOHNSON CITY – The East Tennessee State University Department of Theatre and Dance is bringing the horror comedy rock musical “Little Shop of Horrors” to the Appalachian Highlands. 

Performances are set for March 30, March 31 and April 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bert C. Bach Theatre at the ETSU Martin Center for the Arts. Matinees are scheduled for April 1-2 at 2 p.m.

East Tennessee State University’s Board of Trustees will hold a special called meeting of the Finance and Administration Committee on Tuesday, March 28 at 11 a.m. to discuss tuition and mandatory fees and budget for 2023-24.

JOHNSON CITY – Members of the Class of 2023 at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine found out today where they were matched for their residencies, which they will begin this summer following their graduation in May.

The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) pairs graduating medical students with residency programs throughout the country. The Class of 2023 had a 100% match rate, the second-straight year Quillen graduates have enjoyed a 100% match rate. Graduates matched into 15 specialties in 20 states and the District of Columbia.

JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University’s Dr. Holly Wei earned a 2022 Book of the Year Award from the American Journal of Nursing (AJN), considered the profession’s premier journal.

The leadership textbook titled “Visionary Leadership in Healthcare: Excellence in Practice, Policy, and Ethics” was the first-place winner in in AJN’ “Nursing Management and Leadership” category. Wei is a professor and associate dean for Research and Scholarship at ETSU’s College of Nursing. We study the importance of peer effects among sell-side analysts who work at the same brokerage house, but cover different firms. By mapping the information network within each brokerage, we identify analysts who occupy central positions in their network. Central analysts incorporate more information from their coworkers and produce better research. Using shocks to network structures around brokerage mergers, we identify the influence of peer effects and the importance of industry expertise on analysts’ performance. A portfolio strategy that exploits the forecast revisions of central analysts earns up to 24% per annum.

Policymakers introduce bank levies (BLs) to reduce the probability of crises. In this study, we evaluate the effects of the Hungarian and German BLs implemented in 2010 and 2011, respectively, on the banks’ risk-taking behavior. Our analysis compares two completely different BL designs. The German BL is designed to increase as banks’ total liabilities increase, while the Hungarian BL is assessed on total assets. The results unambiguously demonstrate that a BL on assets increases banks’ credit risk. Internal auditors assigned to assess internal controls over financial reporting incorporate irrelevant information into their judgment, showing decreased skepticism when irrelevant information contradicts preconceived stereotypes of management, known as the dilution effect and attributed to the representativeness heuristic. Irrelevant information consistent with preconceived stereotypes does not decrease skepticism. In this experiment practicing internal auditors are provided an irrelevant description of the Chief Information Officer portrayed as either gregarious or introverted then subsequently receive relevant internal controls information. The past three decades have witnessed a tremendous shift in public health policies towards marijuana legalization in the U.S. Adopting the process-based view of innovation, we hypothesize that marijuana's increased use and related consequences after its legalization affect innovators’ behavior and social environment during the innovation process, which in turn impacts regional innovation. Utilizing the staggered adoption of medical marijuana laws by 20 states between 1996 and 2013 as a quasi-experimental setting, we find that legalizing medical marijuana reduces the overall output of regional innovation, as proxied by patents’ total forward-citation count aggregated by innovator location.
