• The total annual economic impact of FMG is $138 million in economic activity, supporting 1,167 jobs, and contributing $77.6 million to Kent County’s GDP.
• The visitor direct spending, operational spending, and capital investment spending generate $353,115 in annual tax revenue for Kent County.
• There were 755,000 visitors to Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park (FMG) with 62% of these visitors coming from outside Kent County (nonlocal visitors).

So far, Kroger has begun to use AI for employee onboarding and training processes, CVS is applying AI in negotiations with suppliers, and Walgreens is using it to streamline vaccine scheduling. The opioid epidemic has had a strong impact on West Virginia, due to various social, economic, cultural, and environmental hardships. To aid users, Needle Exchange Programs (NEPs) were created to exchange used needles for new sterile ones and provide awareness of treatment and rehabilitation options. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of NEPs in reducing HIV and Hepatitis C infections in West Virginia, and the subsequent decrease in healthcare costs. In 2018 and 2019, there was an HIV outbreak in Cabell County, with 85 cases requiring CDC intervention in 2019. This occurred after the county-run needle exchange was reduced. …

This year, rural Nebraskans are more pessimistic about their current situation than they’ve been in the past ten years. The proportion believing they are worse off than they were five years ago was 27 percent, up from the 21 percent last year and 11 percent in 2021. This is the highest level since both 2003 and 2009, when 28 percent believed they were worse off. This increase in pessimism was matched with a decrease in optimism. Competition Law Reform And Firm Performance: Evidence From Developing Countries, Incheol Kim, Suin Lee, Bina Sharma

We examine the effects of competition laws on firm performance in East Asian countries that have enacted antitrust legislation in the last three decades. Exploiting the staggered changes of these laws as quasi-exogenous shocks, we find that strengthened competition laws improve firm performance. Treated firms increase R&D investments and efficiency in inventory and asset management, while free cash flow decreases after reforms. Also, the effect of competition laws on firm performance is stronger with weaker corporate governance. Our findings indicate that government intervention promoting competitive market environments could benefit corporate owners in emerging markets where corporate governance is often substandard.

This study explains how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the food sector adapted during the pandemic. In-depth, semi-structured, hybrid interviews were conducted with fifteen SME owners in the food sector in Bandung, Indonesia. The study describes five business adaptation strategies using service-dominant logic (S-DL) and structural-functionalism theory: (a) relationship adaptation with suppliers and landlords, (b) employee adaptation, (c) product and sales adaptation, (d) operations adaptation, and (e) promotion adaptation. The focus of this paper is to conceptualize and measure consumer-based authenticity as well as its effects on social networks (SN) and attachment. In addition, it explores the effect of consumer attachment. In order to address this focus, it suggests a framework for analyzing this relationship by using the Partial Least Squares Equation Modeling. An In-Depth Analysis Of The Impact Of Cyberattacks On The Profitability Of Commercial Banks In The United States, Asligul Erkan-Barlow, Thanh Ngo, Rajni Goel, Denise W. Streeter

Journal of Global Business Insights

This study examined the effects of cyberattacks on the profitability of U.S. public and private commercial banks using a sample of 120 data breaches across various institutions. The results showed that cyberattacks negatively influence bank profitability, with effects more robust in the 12 quarters following a breach, especially from non-hack breaches. Large and private banks suffer more than small and public banks, with breaches resulting in decreased deposits and loans and increased liquidity. These changes are confirmed as independent channels reducing bank profitability. The results were robust after controlling for factors like multicollinearity, non-stationarity, cross-sectional dependence, and heteroskedasticity.

Research into the impacts of globalization on domestic growth in Africa has been scarce and the results of the research that does exist have been mixed. This research addresses this gap in the literature by using the newly revised KOF Globalization Index to determine the impact of social, political, and financial globalization on African economies. The KOF Index was revised substantially in 2019. Our full data set includes 40 years of data, from 1980-2019. Findings indicate that the relationship between globalization and GDP is best represented by a non-linear cubic model. With that model, social globalization has become Africa’s most …

With the arrival of name, image, and likeness (NIL), the college sports labor market has distinctly taken on similar characteristics to the gig economy, with athletes able to earn extra compensation through external NIL-based independent contractor “gigs.” But with this comparison comes comparable issues, and scholarship and litigation examining and challenging gig economy structures have identified several legal and ethical concerns both individual to each worker and more broadly affecting labor markets. This dissertation refines defense contracting by addressing aspects of managing contractual relationships. While the setting and data relate to defense contracts, the lessons can be expanded to nonprofit contracting beyond defense and even to contract management in general. First it presents a game theoretic model of a relational contract between a for-profit supplier and a non-profit buyer and explores how the model could be used to promote stability, manage costs, enhance cooperation, and encourage long-term capacity. This dissertation considers the importance of identifying spatiotemporal vulnerabilities in ground distribution networks and uses operations research methods to formulate models that allow military logistic planners to implement prevention and mitigation measures regarding the routing of personnel, equipment, and supplies in contested Areas of Responsibility (AOR). For optimization models relating to identifying spatiotemporal network vulnerabilities in distribution networks, this work leverages game theory, mixed-integer programming, multi-objective optimization, and metaheuristics to inform mitigation measures for shipment routing. We propose a conceptual framework to illustrate that when three conditions hold, institutional investors moderate a positive relation between corporate financial performance and corporate environmental performance. We explore heterogeneities across institution types to demonstrate the importance of each condition. The moderating effect works through the channels of expert consulting and effective monitoring. Our results have important policy and practical implications given the global trend of ownership concentration in institutional investors and the projection that by 2025, one out of three dollars under professional management will be invested in corporate social responsibility assets.

The public will have two chances to interact with Major Jackson on Monday, Sept. 18.  

At 2 p.m. in the D.P. Culp Student Center, room 311, Jackson will take part in a roundtable discussion about poetry and writing. An audience question-and-answer session will follow. At 7 p.m., Jackson will read from his poetry in the Brown Hall Auditorium, with books for sale and book signing opportunities after both events.
