The Party's Over: The Role Of Earnings Guidance In Resolving Sentiment-Driven Overvaluation, Nicholas Seybert, Holly I. Yang Feb 2012

The Party's Over: The Role Of Earnings Guidance In Resolving Sentiment-Driven Overvaluation, Nicholas Seybert, Holly I. Yang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This paper shows that an important link between investor sentiment and firm over valuation is optimistic earnings expectations, and that management earnings guidance helps resolve sentiment-driven overvaluation. Using previously identified firm characteristics, we find that most of the negative returns to uncertain firms in months following high-sentiment periods fall within the three-day window around the issuance of management earnings guidance. Comparisons of guidance months to nonguidance months show that guidance issuance affects the magnitude and not just the daily distribution of negative returns. There is also some evidence of negative returns around earnings announcements for firms that previously issued guidance, …

Revisiting The Dragon: The State Of Singapore’S Regionalization Into China, Caroline Yeoh, Wilfred Pow Ngee How, Febbry Lasgon Feb 2012

Revisiting The Dragon: The State Of Singapore’S Regionalization Into China, Caroline Yeoh, Wilfred Pow Ngee How, Febbry Lasgon

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Many years on, with the main thrust of Singapore's internationalization efforts now pointed elsewhere, the current state of Singapore's state-enterprise network in previous main regions of interest, most notably ever-developing China, remains an area of interest for the purpose of evaluating the city-state's determined efforts to encapsulate economic space for its businesses on foreign soil – perhaps with lessons of relevance to the city-state's latest areas of focus, and certainly of relevance to efforts in the long-term. As a study related to our papers on this topic, we revisit the sprawling sub-continent and the operations of Singapore businesses located therein. …

The Globalization Of Chinese Enterprises, Christoph Lattemann, Ilan Alon, Marc Fetscherin, John Mcintyre, Julian Chang Feb 2012

The Globalization Of Chinese Enterprises, Christoph Lattemann, Ilan Alon, Marc Fetscherin, John Mcintyre, Julian Chang

Faculty Publications

The question of how and why Chinese firms globalize is one of the most pressing issues for businesses today. China's globalization process is nothing less than remarkable. The twenty-first century will feature a developing country as the leader of the global economy by 2020, when, by most estimates, China's purchasing power parity (PPP) gross domestic product (GDP) surpasses America's. With China's new role on the world's stage, global economic and political institutions are likely to change. China's foray into Latin America, for example, has changed the traditional role that America has played in its “backyard.” While the Chinese government was …

Does Complexity Deter Customer-Focus?, Sendil K. Ethiraj, Narayanasamy Ramasubbu, M. S. Krishnan Feb 2012

Does Complexity Deter Customer-Focus?, Sendil K. Ethiraj, Narayanasamy Ramasubbu, M. S. Krishnan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Economic models suggest that firms use a simple cost-benefit calculation to evaluate customer requests for new product features, but an extensive organizational literature shows the decision to implement innovation is more nuanced. We address this theoretical tension by studying how firms respond to customer requests for incremental product innovations, and how these responses change when the requested innovation is complex. Using large sample empirical analyses combined with detailed qualitative data drawn from interviews, we find considerable variance in the relationship between customer demands, complexity, and investments in incremental innovations. The qualitative study revealed the importance of organization structures, competitive pressures, …

Manipulation Of Online Reviews: An Analysis Of Ratings, Readability, And Sentiments, Nan Hu, Indranil Bose, Noi Sian Koh, Ling Liu Feb 2012

Manipulation Of Online Reviews: An Analysis Of Ratings, Readability, And Sentiments, Nan Hu, Indranil Bose, Noi Sian Koh, Ling Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As consumers become increasingly reliant on online reviews to make purchase decisions, the sales of the product becomes dependent on the word of mouth (WOM) that it generates. As a result, there can be attempts by firms to manipulate online reviews of products to increase their sales. Despite the suspicion on the existence of such manipulation, the amount of such manipulation is unknown, and deciding which reviews to believe in is largely based on the reader's discretion and intuition. Therefore, the success of the manipulation of reviews by firms in generating sales of products is unknown. In this paper, we …

Intellectual Capital And Firm Performance: An Empirical Study Of Software Firms In West Africa, Mohammed-Sani Abdulai, Youngsun Kwon, Junghoon Moon

The African Journal of Information Systems

This study investigates factors instrumental to the success of software industries of the 3I Nations (India, Ireland and Israel), examines the relationship between its elements, and studies the performance of software firms in West Africa. The study draws on concepts from multiple theoretical perspectives to develop a model for assessing the relationship between intellectual capital of software firms and their performance. The developed model was experimentally validated through a field survey of 83 software companies in West Africa using the Partial Least Square method. The survey results show significant relationship between the elements of intellectual capital and competitive capabilities of …

An Examination Of Coordination Among Friends And Strangers From A Coordination Theory Perspective, Christopher D. Wamble Jan 2012

An Examination Of Coordination Among Friends And Strangers From A Coordination Theory Perspective, Christopher D. Wamble

Theses

Within mobile social coordination, there is a field of study known as outeraction, the communicative processes used by people to manage future interactions. It is an important area of research because it identifies how informal interactions support complex collaboration between individuals and groups. Outeraction is primarily conducted through the interpersonal communication channels of texting, instant messaging (IM), face-to-face, and mobile phone or Skype conversations. Currently this area of research in mobile outeraction support systems is weak. It lacks a firm foundation in system building, has very few if any conceptual frameworks, and little empirical knowledge of user requirements and attitudes …

Kimmel Education and Research Center: Faculty and Staff Publications

Innovation has become essential to survival and success in the 21st Century. Globalization combined with the rapid rate of change and explosive population growth have created a need for entrepreneurial activity, both inside and outside of new venture creation, that leads to continuous innovation while considering social and environmental impacts. Entrepreneurs are needed to establish new ventures and to employ others while developing new products, services and solutions. Entrepreneurial individuals, who may or may not start a business, are needed because they are innovators who behave or act in a proactive manner and move organizations forward.

Many different structures, …

Market Price Of Risk Analysis From Three Major Industrial Countries On The Stability Of The Brennan-Schwartz Model, Tri Handhika Jan 2012

Market Price Of Risk Analysis From Three Major Industrial Countries On The Stability Of The Brennan-Schwartz Model, Tri Handhika

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

At any given time, market price of risk must be the same for all derivatives and it is linked in particular to interest rate. The Brennan-Schwartz model is one of the stochastic differential equations for the interest rate under the risk neutral probability measure. To estimate parameters of this model, it is required that the real data which are collected in the real world in which the distribution of interest rate process is under the actual probability measure. Therefore, parameter estimators are obtained by changing the measure which is determined by the market price of risk. Hence, market price of …

An Examination Of Herd Behavior In The Indonesian Stock Market, Adi Vithara Purba, Ida Ayu Agung Faradynawati

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

We examine herd behavior in Indonesian Stock Exchange, using daily and weekly stocks return from 2007 until 2010. We employ the cross sectional standard deviation of returns (CSSD methodology developed by Christie and Huang (1995) and cross sectional absolute dispersion (CSAD methodology developed by Chang et al. (2000) to detect the presence of herd behavior. Using daily and weekly CSSD, we document the nonexistence of herding behavior in Indonesian stock market. However, using CSAD of either data frequency the result demonstrates the presence of herding behavior, particularly on big capitalization and liquid stocks. The result differs from Chang et al. …

Indonesian government has changed the taxation law in 2007. The regulation revealed that companies listed on capital market can obtain reduced income tax rate by 5 percent. Decrease in income tax rates is granted to domestic corporate taxpayers listed on capital market that have public ownership over 40 percent of the total paid shares and the shares owned by at least 300 parties. The purpose of this research is to analyze the effectiveness of government regulation (PP) No. 81 of 2007. Turn-Off-The-Month Effect On Stocks In Lq45 Index And Various Sectors In The Indonesia Stock Exchange Using Garch (P,Q), Galih Pandekar, Nadia Putrini Jan 2012

Turn-Off-The-Month Effect On Stocks In Lq45 Index And Various Sectors In The Indonesia Stock Exchange Using Garch (P,Q), Galih Pandekar, Nadia Putrini

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

There are few types of anomalies that occur in the Indonesia Stock Exchange, for example monthly effect, day-of-the-week effect, January effect, holiday effect, and turn-of-the-month effect. The existence of these anomalies is in contrast to the efficient market hypothesis theory, due to a signifi-cant difference in returns during certain periods. By using time-series analysis and the GARCH(p,q) method, the existence of the turn-of-the-month effect has been found in the Jakarta Composite Index, sectoral indexes, and stocks in LQ45. The turn-of-the-month effect seems to be seen in the last two days and the four previous days of each month. The January …

Business Plan For A Benefit Concert, Adam Rosenthal Jan 2012

Business Plan For A Benefit Concert, Adam Rosenthal

Whittier Scholars Program

My main focus in creating this business plan is to map out how to run a schedule of operations. This is the type of business plan that a benefit calls for, instead of creating a business plan for the creation of a new business or venture. My main objective in creating this business plan for a benefit concert is to be able to create something tangible that I can share, as well as share the real world knowledge that I have gained in researching, and putting together this business plan. With this project I have gained real music industry knowledge …

Agenda: Air Quality Impacts From Oil And Gas Development, University Of Colorado Boulder. Natural Resources Law Center

Air Quality Impacts from Oil and Gas Development (January 27)

Oil and gas development and hydraulic fracturing have received enormous attention over the past few years, and most of that attention has focused on the potential impacts of such development on water quality. However, the potential impacts on air quality from oil and gas development have received far less public and media attention and discussion. This two-hour program will assess the current scientific knowledge, regulatory requirements and policies regarding the impacts on air quality from oil and gas development and will address current initiatives at the state and national levels to further regulate and control those impacts.

What Type Of Framing Message Is More Appropriate With Nine-Ending Pricing?, Jungsil Choi, Kiljae Lee, Yong-Yeon Ji Jan 2012

What Type Of Framing Message Is More Appropriate With Nine-Ending Pricing?, Jungsil Choi, Kiljae Lee, Yong-Yeon Ji

Business Faculty Publications

While the effect of nine-ending prices on purchases has been well documented, studies that examine the impact of this pricing technique in the context of advertisements are rare. This paper examines the joint effect of the pricing technique and message frames on the advertisement efficacy. Since a nine-ending price is compatible with gain-framed messages due to its gain image, we propose that nine-ending pricing strengthens the effectiveness of gain-framed messages (versus loss-framed messages) on the overall advertisement efficacy. The results of two experiments provide support for this hypothesis.

A Study Of Golfers In Tennessee, Kelly Price-Rhea

ETSU Faculty Works

The purpose of this study was to investigate preferred shopping behaviors of golfers in the state of Tennessee. While much research has been done on retail shopping behavior in general, little exists regarding shopping behavior in sport retail, and more specifically golf retail. While golfer behavior has been researched in other areas such as tourism, it has not been fully researched in the sport or retail literature. Since this segment of consumer spends millions of dollars per year, this study was conducted to fill the gap in the literature regarding this unique consumer. An online survey was distributed among a …

'True' Unemployment In The United States And The St. Louis Metro Area, Howard J. Wall Jan 2012

'True' Unemployment In The United States And The St. Louis Metro Area, Howard J. Wall

Center for Applied Economics

Official unemployment rates produced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) are intended to capture the extent to which the economy is generating employment for those adults who want to work. It has been known for some time, however, that, because of the discouraged-worker effect, the official unemployment rates understate the true extent of unemployment. The BLS produces alternative measures that are meant to address this problem, but, because these measures exclude anyone who has been discouraged for more than a year, they are inadequate given the prolonged nature of the current recovery.
