The Quality Of Corporate Governance And The Length It Takes To Remove Apoor Performing Ceo. Does Performance Of The Former Firm Affect A Ceo's Ability To Find An Identical With A Subsequent Firm?, Huong Nguyen

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Abstract 1:

In this paper, we investigate the effects of internal corporate governance on the length it takes to remove a CEO after the initial sign of poor firm performance. We find that firms that have a better quality of internal corporate governance are quicker to remove poor-performing CEOs. This result persists after controlling for other factors that might influence the CEO removal decision.

Abstract 2:

Employing a sample of voluntary CEO turnovers selected from S&P 500 firms over the period 2004-2009, I investigate the impact prior firm performance on a CEO’s potential of being hired on an equivalent job …

Two Essays On Investment, Yao Zheng Dec 2012

Two Essays On Investment, Yao Zheng

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two essays: one looks at the time-varying relationship between earnings and price momentum, and the other looks at how liquidity and transparency affect the pricing differential between Chinese A-and Hong Kong H-share.

The first essay presented in Chapter I investigates the time varying relationship between earnings momentum and price momentum. Using a Markov-switching framework, allowing for variation between high volatility and low volatility states, I find that price momentum is significantly more influenced by earnings momentum in the high volatility state. Further for price momentum I find that loser firms display a higher degree of differential …

What Impact Does Cause-Related Marketing Have On Professional Sports Teams?, Christina Damore

American Express Credit Card Company discovered such a marketing tool in 1981 when they sponsored the Statue of Liberty Restoration Project by donating a predetermined percentage of their card sales. The purpose of the sponsorship was twofold: American Express wished to increase card usage as well as support a cause to gain an overall better corporate image. In the end, American Express experienced a 28% increase in card usage and was able to donate $1.7 million to the Statue …

The Effect Of Ifrs On The Financial Ratios Of Canadian Public Mining Companies., Heath Aaron Mcconnell

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The objective of this study is to add to the body of research concerning International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). To accomplish this objective, it will examine whether Canada’s adoption of IFRS, which replaced Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), appears to affect the reported financial performance of Canadian public mining companies. Financial information for 2010 from the audited financial statements, as stated under IFRS and Canadian GAAP, were used to compute selected financial ratios. These financial ratios were tested to determine if statistically significant differences in their dispersion and central tendency resulted from adopting IFRS. It was found that no …

Economic Effects Of A Lifo Reserve Rollover, Michael Eubanks Dec 2012

Economic Effects Of A Lifo Reserve Rollover, Michael Eubanks

Honors Theses

The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) have been working together toward the convergence of accounting standards to provide a single set of high quality global standards. Companies who are currently in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) will need to make necessary adjustments as those standards converge with International Standards. GAAP uses a rules based approach while the IFRS is more principle based. These contrasting approaches create differences that need to be reconciled at various levels of the two standards’ applications. Perhaps the most telling example, under AIS 2 Inventories, the …

Analysis Of The Impact Of Contagion Flow On Firm Value And Application To High Yield Bond Portfolio Optimization, Wendy Ann-Swenson Roth Dec 2012

Analysis Of The Impact Of Contagion Flow On Firm Value And Application To High Yield Bond Portfolio Optimization, Wendy Ann-Swenson Roth

Doctoral Dissertations

Portfolios of financial instruments are designed to increase returns and manage risk. In high-risk investment strategies, central measures of risk must be complemented with controls on tail measures of risk. An unanticipated event that impacts securities of one firm can contagiously effect those of other firms through a contagion flow process that may occur via a set of network connections. Such connections among firms arise due to a variety of factors, such as a shared supply chain member or auditing firm. These connections spread the contagion, potentially impacting numerous other firms in the network. This can adversely affect the level …

Liquidity In The 144a Debt Market, Karen Ann Craig Dec 2012

Liquidity In The 144a Debt Market, Karen Ann Craig

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents my research analyzing the liquidity component of corporate bond spreads for bonds issued privately under Rule 144A during the period 2003 – 2011. Rule 144A bonds are limited to trading among qualified institutional investors and therefore are inherently less liquid than registered corporate bonds. I assess an amendment to Rule 144 modifying the restrictions on public resale of Rule 144A bonds intended to increase the liquidity of 144A bonds and decrease the cost of capital to firms issuing these securities. This amendment provides an ideal exogenous shock to evaluate 144A bonds. Assessing the liquidity premiums and yield …

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

This senior project discusses the design, fabrication and manufacturing analysis of a rollover protection system specifically designed for early body style Ford Broncos (1966-1977). The rollover protection system, or roll cage, is an integral safety feature on vehicles which commonly encounter extreme terrain conditions. Many vehicles which attempt to traverse terrain such as this are not always properly equipped with a rollover protection system. This is the case with the early body style Ford Bronco. This system will be designed to market the niche of early bronco parts.

The Creation Of Student-Run Public Relations Firms: A Historical Look At Student-Run Firms, Hannah Hazdovac Dec 2012

The Creation Of Student-Run Public Relations Firms: A Historical Look At Student-Run Firms, Hannah Hazdovac

Journalism

This study explores the history and background of student-run public relations firms on

college campuses and the benefits, if any, that students receive as a result of working

in such a firm. The public relations industry estimated at growing 18 percent between

2006 and 2016 (Todd, 2009). Even with the sudden expansion of the public relations

industry, and subsequently, public relations education, evidence suggests that recent

public relations graduates often times do meet entry-level outcome expectancies of

employers, leaving a need for a change in curriculum (Creedon, Dostal, Gael, Smith &

Walker, 1999). It is becoming increasingly more important to …

The Effectiveness Of Sell Discipline Strategies In Institutional Portfolios, Ryan Kennedy Dec 2012

The Effectiveness Of Sell Discipline Strategies In Institutional Portfolios, Ryan Kennedy

Business/Business Administration

Prospect theory predicts that individuals will be risk seeking when faced with a potential loss. An implication is that investors may be reluctant to sell losing stocks, leading to potentially greater losses. This study explores whether institutional portfolio performance is significantly related to the manager’s stated sell discipline strategy. Six distinct sell discipline approaches are compared using four performance metrics. As predicted by prospect theory, this study finds sell discipline to be a statistically significant factor in performance for all performance metrics. The results also show that the best sell discipline strategy is dependent on which performance metric is used.

Terrorisk: The Impact Of Terrorist Attacks On Sovereign Bond Yield Spreads Of Targeted Countries, Slava Rar

Business/Business Administration

This study estimates the effects of terrorism incidents on a nation’s borrowing costs. An event study approach is used to evaluate changes in sovereign-bond yield spreads after terrorist attacks occur. Prior research is not in consensus on whether the effect of terrorism on bond markets is significant, and no study shows why certain bond indices may rise while others may fall after a terrorist attack. This study does not find statistical significance, which suggests that the effect of an attack may depend on the targeted country. For terrorist researchers, this study is one step toward answering whether terrorists can manipulate …

The Compatibility Of National Culture In International Mergers And Acquisitions, Chaoyun Liu Dec 2012

The Compatibility Of National Culture In International Mergers And Acquisitions, Chaoyun Liu

Senior Honors Theses

This paper examines the relationship between national culture differences and five-day cumulative abnormal returns of acquirers around cross-border merger announcements. The sample consists of 1,200 cross-border deals by frequent acquirers from emerging countries for the period of January 1, 1985 to June 30, 2008. The main objective is to analyze the relation between the difference in Hofstede (1984)’s four cultural dimensions --- power distance, individualism, masculinity, and uncertainty avoidance and the merger performance. The results imply the compatibility of some cultural dimensions, individualism in particular, that result in gains in merger. The results also show that the cultural effects vary …

The True Value Of Value-Added Services In Digital Print, Noemi Garcia Dec 2012

The True Value Of Value-Added Services In Digital Print, Noemi Garcia

Graphic Communication

This study compares the success of five digital printers in California’s central coast based on whether they choose to charge for value-added services. It questions past research that shows digital printers who implement an additional fee for such services are more successful than digital printers who do not always bill the customer for the extra services. It focuses on determining the reasons behind each printer’s strategy through a questionnaire. The study concludes printers not charging are not necessarily losing money because they have found ways to eliminate non-value-adding steps in their value chain. Therefore success must be redefined other than …

Knowledge Transfer Between Expatriates And Host Country Nationals: A Social Capital Perspective, Yu-Shan Hsu Dec 2012

Knowledge Transfer Between Expatriates And Host Country Nationals: A Social Capital Perspective, Yu-Shan Hsu

Theses and Dissertations

One of the competitive advantages of multinational corporations (MNCs) is to successfully transfer knowledge among geographically dispersed and diverse locations (de Pablos, 2006; Kogut & Zander, 1993). During the process of knowledge transfer in MNCs, expatriates and host country nationals (HCNs) serve as boundary spanners, meaning that they generally serve as bridges for the transference of knowledge. However, because it might be more difficult for expatriates and HCNs to form positive relationships as they are from different cultural backgrounds, the transfer of knowledge may be impeded. This raises an intriguing question: How can expatriates and HCNs overcome the differences inherent …
