This dissertation addresses the integrated problem of assigning students to schools and generating school bus routes particularly focusing on the special needs students is addressed. Special needs students generally require supplementary accommodations and must be picked up from and dropped off at their home addresses. This will increase the number of nodes in the network and therefore introduces additional complexities to the problems of assignment and routing for students. While positive social evaluations can help organizations build their reputation and social capital, negative evaluations can cause significant social and economic distress. This dissertation is comprised of three studies that examine the implications of fraud detection decisions. The first study examines whether auditors’ mindfulness practices influence their ability to accurately detect fraud risk factors. The second study evaluates whether organization type influences whether and how perpetrators are punished. The third study evaluates whether management’s decision to increase controls when fraud occurs has unintended negative consequences for other employees. Together, these studies contribute to accounting literature related to fraud detection.

This dissertation is comprised of three studies that examine the impact of incentives on management behavior to complement agency problems literature. The first paper studies whether incentives associated with firm life cycle stages impact management disclosure quality. The second paper explores these incentives more deeply and investigates whether the likelihood of fraud is different across life cycle stages. The third paper examines whether rating agencies play a role in alleviating agency problems in nonprofit organizations by increasing public exposure and reducing information asymmetry.

By identifying the key factors that led to high-speed railway accidents, hidden safety hazards were discovered. The revenue of online display advertising is expected to reach 389 billion U.S. dollars globally in 2021. However, the fast increase in ad-blocker usage impacts publishers' ad revenue and the ad-supported free web. Faced with this problem, many online publishers choose either to cooperate with ad-blocker software companies to show acceptable ads or to build a wall that requires users to whitelist (i.e., turn off ad-blockers) for content access. Hospitals are experiencing decreasing profitability due to increasing healthcare cost. In this paper, I demonstrate that there is financial value to hospitals by addressing social determinants of health (SDOH) as this strategy improves health outcomes and yields cost savings. I estimate the impact of SDOH on the health outcomes using an IV probit regression analysis and estimated the impact of health outcomes on cost using a basic linear regression. I estimate that improving SDOH by one standard deviation will result in hospital cost savings as follows: addressing Violent Crime will decrease hospital cost between 0.16% and 0.21%, addressing Supplemental Nutrition …

This dissertation consists of two essays that examine the role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in finance. In the first essay, we examine the bondholder wealth effects of socially responsible firms. Using an extensive U.S sample from 2006 to 2016 and two methodologies – corporate yield spreads and bond credit ratings – we provide evidence that proactive environmental and social practices are reflected in the price of corporate bonds. Furthermore, we examine the impact of managerial ownership on the relationship between CSR and bondholder wealth effects.
