Despite a recognized need for whistleblowing systems in academic research, little to no attention has been given to the necessary requirements for and specific design of effective whistleblowing systems. In order to increase the rate of reporting, it is critical for reporting systems to be designed with the intent to reduce employee fears and inhibitions by reducing the potential for retaliation. Therefore, the goal of this three-essay dissertation was to enhance a firm's ability to solicit and investigate concerns by proposing and evaluating a system aimed at fostering anonymous, two-way communication between employees and investigators of wrongdoing.

While numerous studies have looked at the influence of occupational stress on employees, less is known about the effects on employees in the for-profit higher education industry. Admissions advisors in particular must endure cyclical pressures to fill classes to ensure a college’s financial viability. A criterion sample of 12 admissions advisors employed at a for-profit nursing college with campuses located throughout the United States were interviewed. The participant criterion sample specifically sought to include advisors who enroll pre-licensure nursing degree-seeking students.

Three studies explored the consequences of loyalty program partnership on individual brands. The first study sought to determine what kinds of brand equity and category similarity would result in customers’ higher perceived attractiveness of and intention to join the loyalty program partnership. The study finds that higher category similarity increases both perceived attractiveness and joining intention towards a loyalty program partnership. When loyalty program partnership consisted of similar category businesses, individual brands also experienced changes to their brand equity levels. This dissertation proposes a method that quantifies the dynamics caused by disruptions due to multiple changes that can occur during the progression of a large scale project. To begin, equations consisting of multiple parallel event sequences are derived that define the relationship between individual process events and the final project completion time. Matrix notation and a precedence matrix concept are used in this derivation to produce equations that are best suited for computer programming applications. In our first essay, we study the intertemporal risk-return trade-off relations based on returns from 18 international markets. This dissertation aims to propose a general theory of disintegration. This subject is not treated directly by some theoretical accounts and mistreated by others. European integration theories are fashioned to explain the greater integration process while game-theoretic approaches to withdrawals and secessions, even if treating disintegration directly, fail to include critically responsible factors. This dissertation offers a constructive criticism of both accounts. Since neither turning integration theories symmetrically around nor direct, game-theoretic assessment of disintegration help to provide sufficient explanation, it is suggested that the problem of symmetrical reversal and rational conduct must be revised.

Prior studies investigating the selection of audit committee members (ACMs) often focus on board-level and director demographic characteristics. In this paper, I investigate whether boards select new ACMs from corporate environments with similar financial reporting quality. Using the appointee firm's financial report quality as a proxy for new ACMs' financial reporting attributes, I find that firms are more likely to appoint new ACMs with financial reporting attributes similar to firms' financial reporting culture for a sample of 275 new ACM appointments from 2007 to 2011. This study examines the effect of auditor size on audit quality at the level of audit partners. Auditor size is defined by three criteria: the wealth of the audit partners; the size of the partners' client portfolios; and the number of audit partners in the firm. Using data from China, where disclosure of the identity of the engagement audit partner is required, I hypothesize and find that the personal wealth of an audit partner has two effects on audit quality: the income effect and the substitution effect. Essay 1: Using data from StockTwits.com, the most popular investment-dedicated social media network in the US, I develop new and direct measures of investors' aggregate attention to the stock market, and to individual stocks. I then examine the behavior of investors' aggregate attention and firm-specific attention. First, I show that investors' aggregate attention to the stock market is higher during earnings season than non-earnings season, but is not lower on Fridays compared to other weekdays. In the first essay I examine the cash policies of female-led firms. Recent research finds that female CEOs eschew riskier corporate policies, but it makes contradicting claims whether this is due to risk aversion. Benchmarking risk aversion by the management of firms’ cash, I find that female CEOs are risk averse relative to male CEOs. Specifically, they hold significantly (18%) more cash, even for the same level of dividend payout as male CEOs. Further, they have significantly higher speed of adjustment for cash deficits, are more likely to use excess cash to increase dividends, but are equally likely to use …

In this thesis, we investigate the incentive contracting problem between a manufacturer and an agent when the realized sales of a product are affected by both the agent's selling effort and the type of the agent.
