Consumer Response To Green Brands Vs. Traditional Brands On Digital Platforms: An Analysis Through A Series Of Case Studies, Madison Busick

Honors Scholar Theses

In the age of environmental crisis, consumers are increasingly aware of the environmental impact of their decisions. Accordingly, many companies seek to provide more eco-friendly and sustainable products while building their brand around these values. Consumers also are increasingly using and engaging on social media and other digital platforms. But just how well do these "green" brands do in the digital space? This study aims to compare differences between brands that embody environmentalist values and traditional brands with a variety of case studies across several consumer goods segments including clothing, cosmetics, and technology. What Consumers Don’T Know They’Re Giving Away (Data And Privacy Concerns), Bayleigh Reeves

Marketing Undergraduate Honors Theses

The modern world leverages technology and information captured by it in ways the inventors of these technologies likely never imagined. Phones and other devices are gathering information about consumers in the background when they do not even realize it. Pew Research Center found that about 77% of Americans own a smartphone and 88% use the internet. This mass access to technology and information tracking raises many privacy concerns. Basic demographic information is being tracked as well as more in-depth information like shopping tendencies, financial information, and information about known associates. While most of this data is being used for marketing …

The Cultural Influence On Sharing Economy Services: The Case Of Airbnb, Lacey K. Wallace

Honors Theses

The sharing economy offers consumers an alternative to ownership by exchanging value through technology-based services. As sharing economy practices continue to emerge, business scholars have only recently begun to study how cultural differences impact the sharing economy. Specifically, few studies have examined individual cultural values. Therefore, this study explores whether differences in cultural values, using Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, account for consumers’ attitudes and participation in sharing economy services (SES). Utilizing a survey, data was gathered from a total of 276 consumers from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) who had previous experience with Airbnb, a popular peer-to-peer accommodation SES. Multiple regression was …

Dark Clouds: The Ethics Behind A Growing Vape Culture, Matthew Crenshaw

Accounting Undergraduate Honors Theses

This project addresses the areas of vaping consequences and the overall perception of vaping as a whole from the public. It also successfully answers one primary question: Have vaping companies really done anything “unethical” in terms of marketing and selling their products, or are they just the easiest entity to blame?

Vaping has been referred to as an “epidemic” in recent years. It has gained an immense amount of popularity among America’s youth however little is known about its long-term health risks. Vaping, along with its advertising techniques and unique target audience, has been compared to cigarettes and with that …

Negative Brand Placement: Directions For Future Research, Fernanda Baez Calvillo May 2020

Negative Brand Placement: Directions For Future Research, Fernanda Baez Calvillo

University Honors Program Senior Projects

Brand placement, or product placement, is a marketing communication tactic for promoting a brand through media platforms by embedding the brand within the content. It has been proved to be effective in creating product awareness within consumers as well as in altering or at least influencing consumer attitudes towards the brand. Negative brand placement on the other hand, places a brand in a bad light. As a marketing tactic, this can – theoretically – be placed by competitive brands, or the negative portrayal could occur organically as part of program content. It is in the marketer’s best interests to understand …

Emotional Appeals In Nonprofit Advertising: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Print Ads By The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation And The American Cancer Society, Dominique N. A. Harrison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Emotional appeals are frequently employed in strategic messaging by nonprofit organizations. In this study, I identify instances of emotional appeals in select print adverts of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the American Cancer Society, and use rhetorical analysis to explore how each organization’s tactics are strategic in their appeal to target audiences’ emotions. In doing so, I identify several reoccurring emotional themes—including hope, love, and unity—that engage their target audiences and persuade them to respond to diverse calls-to-action. In order to make these appeals to audience emotion, the adverts employ rhetorical devices such as personification, metaphor, repetition, …

Customer Satisfaction And Its Impact On The Future Costs Of Selling, Leon Gim Lim, Kapil R. Tuli, Rajdeep Grewal May 2020

Customer Satisfaction And Its Impact On The Future Costs Of Selling, Leon Gim Lim, Kapil R. Tuli, Rajdeep Grewal

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Although scholars have established that customer satisfaction affects different dimensions of firm financial performance, a managerially important but overlooked aspect is its effect on a firm’s future cost of selling (COS), that is, expenditures associated with persuading customers and providing convenience to them. Accordingly, this study presents the first empirical and theoretical examination of the impact of customer satisfaction on future COS. The authors propose that while higher customer satisfaction can lower future COS, the degree to which a firm realizes this benefit depends on its strategy and operating environment. Analyzing almost two decades of data from 128 firms, the …

Further, the results reveal several factors that may cause these generational differences. Finally, the study explored several ways that marketers in the coffee industry can appeal to different generations’ preferences, especially utilizing …

Spillover Effects From Unintended Trials On Attitude And Behavior: Promoting New Products Through Access-Based Services, Adrian Lehr, Marion Buettgen, Sabine Benoit, Katrin Merfeld May 2020

Spillover Effects From Unintended Trials On Attitude And Behavior: Promoting New Products Through Access-Based Services, Adrian Lehr, Marion Buettgen, Sabine Benoit, Katrin Merfeld

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Access-based services (ABS) provide an opportunity for brands to promote their new products by enabling (unintended) trials. However, the mechanisms and impact of consumer exposure to products in ABS and the subsequent potential spillover effects on both the brand and the product perception are largely unknown. Our hypotheses are derived from the information integration theory (IIT) and subsequently tested. Study 1 is a field study investigating an unintended trial moderated by involvement and positive experience. The results indicate the positive effects of the unintended trial on product and brand attitudes, brand purchase intention, and word of mouth. In line with …

A Comparative Analysis Of Marketing Strategies For The Willamette Valley Wine Region And Hunter Valley Wine Region, Anna Self Apr 2020

A Comparative Analysis Of Marketing Strategies For The Willamette Valley Wine Region And Hunter Valley Wine Region, Anna Self

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

Boutique wineries located anywhere in the world struggle to compete with large wineries that can take advantage of economies of scale and produce wines at a low cost that is not feasible for boutique wineries. Because the smaller wineries cannot compete using a price advantage, they must prioritize other elements of their business and find a marketing strategy that cannot be used by large wineries. Although the Willamette Valley wine region and the Hunter Valley wine region are located on different continents, they emphasize the same strategy of personal connection with their customers and producing consistent high-quality wines to compete …

Muscling My Way To My Positive Future: Physical Exertion Of Strength And Preference For Risk, Eunice Kim Cho, Hee-Kyung Ahn Apr 2020

Muscling My Way To My Positive Future: Physical Exertion Of Strength And Preference For Risk, Eunice Kim Cho, Hee-Kyung Ahn

Asia Marketing Journal

Building on the growing literature on how physical bodily expressions influence psychological processes, the authors propose that exerting physical strength decreases risk perceptions and increases preference for risky options by increasing perceptions of control or agency. The present research is based on the belief of “no pain, no gain”, that when an individual exerts physical strength and effort, he believes he can be the agent in bringing about the desired outcome. Because of this automatic association between exerting physical strength and the sense of being in control of the outcome, the authors hypothesize that even in situations where the outcome …

The 2008, 2012, And 2016 Summer Olympics: A Test Market Efficiency, Joshua Hutchinson

Longwood Senior Theses

Corporate sponsorship is a form of advertising in which companies commit and pay to be associated with certain events. Corporate sponsorships of an event, such as the Olympic Games, may feel the need to evaluate the returns on their investment. In order to evaluate these investments, and how they pay off, an event study has been completed. The risk-adjusted event study methodology was used to test the hypothesis that risk-adjusted return of the sponsor companies stock prices are significantly positively affected by the type of information. The event study tested the effect of the 2008 Beijing, 2012 London and 2016 …

The Detrimental Effect Of Customer Demotion On Customer Profitability In Hierarchical Loyalty Programs, Woojung Chang Apr 2020

The Detrimental Effect Of Customer Demotion On Customer Profitability In Hierarchical Loyalty Programs, Woojung Chang

Asia Marketing Journal

Firms employing hierarchical loyalty programs (HLPs) periodically demote customers from higher to lower status level to divest from unprofitable customers and boost profitability. However, existing literature lacks objective evidence on how customer demotion affects demoted customers’ future purchase behaviors and ultimately profitability for the firm. Moreover, customers in the HLP’s higher position may respond to customer demotion differently from those in the HLP’s lower position. Drawing upon emotions and equity theories, this study quantifies how the profits that customers contribute to the firm change after customer demotion, and compares demoted customers’ behavioral reactions from top-tier with those from bottom-tier based …

Effect Of Social Norm On Consumer Demand: Multiple Constraint Approach, Sungjee Choi, Inwoo Nam, Jaehwan Kim Apr 2020

Effect Of Social Norm On Consumer Demand: Multiple Constraint Approach, Sungjee Choi, Inwoo Nam, Jaehwan Kim

Asia Marketing Journal

The goal of the study is to understand the role of social norm in purchase decisions where demand is revealed in the form of multiple-discreteness. Consumers are socially engaged in various activities through the expectation from others in their community. Actions or decisions are likely to reflect this influence. This implicit or explicit social norm is revealed as the rules, regulations, and standards that are understood, shared, endorsed, and expected by group members. When consumers’ decisions are in distance from the norm, they come to face discomfort such as shame, guilt, embarrassment, and anxiety. These pressure act as a constraint …
