Storytelling Through Movement: An Analysis Of The Connections Between Dance & Literature, Zoe Hester

Movement and storytelling are the links between past and present; both dance and literature have the same artistic and primal origins. We began to dance to express and communicate, to worship and feel. We tell stories for the same reasons: to learn from the past and to be able to communicate in the present.

This work explores the many connections between literature and dance through examinations of six dance forms: Native American, Bharatanatyam, West African, Ballet, Modern, and Post-Modern dance.

The Spanish-Cuban-American War, declared by the United States on April 25, 1898, marks a colonial shift in the history of the Caribbean and solidified the expansionist thrust of the United States outside national borders. Theatres in turn-of-the-century New York, which at this point was one of the theatrical centers of the nation, debated for audiences the imperialist character of the U.S. The Cuban struggle and the resulting Spanish-Cuban-American War permeated U.S. drama, thereby portraying a Caribbean in need of salvation by the military intervention of the United States. Propongo una lectura diferenciada de lo criollo, teniendo en consideración que la exégesis de lo criollo desde los predios de lo caribeño presenta algunas divergencias con relación al concepto de lo criollo manejado para la masa continental. This paper explores Elena Garro’s short story “La culpa es de los tlaxcaltecas.” Supplementing close readings with analyses drawn from relevant authors and theorists, I highlight the key ideas regarding gender, identity, memory, and history that Garro weaves into her text, and I consider Garro’s emphasis on patriarchal control, the internalization of female culpability for the Spanish Conquest of Mexico, and women’s role in constructing and reconstructing historical discourses. By travelling into her own and Mexico’s past, Laura Aldama, one of the main female protagonists in the story, not only challenges gendered histories but also reveals how patriarchal thought continues …

Inicio con una breve reflexión sobre la ucronía y de ahí procederé a discutir el cuento que, a mi parecer, también introduce elementos steampunk en su reimaginación de este importante momento histórico.

En los cuentos de Julio Ramón Ribeyro, la vacilación, que echa las bases de lo fantástico, pasa por dos modalidades diferentes. Mientras en “lo fantástico de percepción” radica en la mera presencia de unos aspectos transgresivos motivados por una explicación pseudocientífica o por la yuxtaposición de lo racional y de lo irracional, en “lo fantástico de lenguaje” es originada por el juego con la propia enunciación. Más específicamente, este juego formal condiciona la intrincada trama psicológica en la que están atrapados los personajes, combina la irrealidad y lo absurdo cotidiano y pone en marcha la ironía y el humor grotescos. …

Este ensayo analiza la ficcionalización del trauma en tres obras cinematográficas de fantasía, dos argentinas: Aparecidos (2007) y Moebius (1996), y una colombiana: El páramo (2011). Se aplica la teoría psicoanalítica sobre la figura paterna y la castración simbólica, para mostrar elementos comunes a la representación cinematográfica de los regímenes autoritarios a través del género gótico, de horror y ciencia ficción. Los filmes coinciden en representar la función paterna como una figura autoritaria que reitera indefinidamente el evento reprimido de la castración simbólica. La situación de violencia extrema impide que la castración simbólica conduzca al establecimiento de la ley y …

This dissertation analyzes the literary production of Leyla Quintana, Kenny Rodríguez, and Eva Ortiz, three Salvadoran poets who participated actively in the Civil War of El Salvador (1980-1992), and produced their literary work in that same period. It explores, from the perspective of Nomadism developed by Rosi Braidotti, the resignification of the feminine subjectivity, as well as the construction of new figurations in order to articulate a counter discourse that challenges the official hegemonic and heteropatriarcal narrative. Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa wrote his polemic and undoubtedly political History of the Incas at the request of Francisco de Toledo (Viceroy of Peru, 1569-1581). Toledo wanted to deliver to the Spanish King a version of Incan history which could subsequently be used as an ideological tool in the search of legal and moral arguments to defend the Andean colonization by the Spanish monarchy. This dissertation focuses on the concepts of marginality and subversion in three novels written by Juan Filloy in the 1930s: ¡Estafen! (1932), Op Oloop (1934) and Caterva (1937). I study these novels in the context of the avant-garde movement of the 1920s and 1930s. I analyze the transformation that the concepts of marginality and subversion undergo when they are explored within the context of the avant-garde aesthetics, instead of that of social realism. I contrast Filloy’s approach to these themes with those of the novelists of the preceding decades. More importantly, I compare and contrast Filloy’s novels to Roberto Arlt’s …

This essay analyzes the literary representation of Isabel Luberza Oppenheimer in the short stories “Cuando las mujeres quieren a los hombres” by Rosario Ferré and “La última plena que bailó Luberza” by Manuel Ramos Otero, both originally published in the seventh edition of the literary journal Zona. Carga y Descarga (1972–1975). Both stories, I argue, appropriate this historical character to transgress the heteronormativity imposed by the hegemonic power and to allow new representations for women and the LGBTQ community in the Puerto Rican literature of the seventies.

This dissertation studies how these female writers produce a cultural paradigm for criticizing the urban crisis in the Dominican Republic that at times is at odds with much narrative written by men and with key concepts in Urban Theory that are taken for granted. La mucama de Omicunlé (2015) es una novela escrita por la autora dominicana Rita Indiana, que lidia con temas que son considerados tabúes dentro de la sociedad dominicana: sexualidad, identidad de género, y espiritualidad afrodescendiente. Indiana utiliza la espiritualidad afrodescendiente para facilitar la exploración de las respectivas identidades de género y de orientación sexual en los personajes principales, Acilde y Argenis. El utilizar la espiritualidad afrodescendiente también permite ver a la novela como un texto literario que utiliza el patakí, una narración que contiene conocimientos afrodescendientes, como elemento estructural principal. This article presents results of auto-ethnography, literary analysis, and fieldwork research to answer an underlying, perhaps unresolved, concern, relevant to this dossier: how can we produce an ethical dialogue as transnational Black Feminists, among Black Brazilian women, and North American Black women, in an ethical manner, while realizing that one may (not ever) be a part of the “carnival without you in it.” Fertile Earth/ Terra Fertil tells a long overdue epic story to an audience within the poetry: Black women, family members, other times a Black man, Brazil, white women, or “you,” undefined. This dissertation focuses on the representation of Ecuadorians in Spain between 2000 and 2015 in literature, film and the press. After enduring a decade of economic, climatic, and political problems, more than 175,000 Ecuadorians emigrated to Spain in 2001 alone (Herrera 2005). This process marked the beginning of a major migratory movement which has caused Spain to become a premier destination. The response to such migration has been disparate, yet both Ecuadorian and Spanish artists as well as the Spanish press have shown the different perspectives related to a discriminatory ideology. En esta novela una serie de personajes van en busca de las huellas de ese viaje y de la utopía perdida de un país condenado a una verdad a medias. Asimismo, los personajes van en busca de la identidad perdida en un viaje que mezcla naturaleza, memoria e historia. Hechos reales mezclados con hechos ficticios. Una novela en constante construcción cuyos autores son los mismos protagonistas.

The urban imaginary is that which bases itself in a real physical and concrete space,

but is a construction created through the lense of a city's inhabitants. This thesis follows

narratives that have reconfigured the cities of México City, San Juan and Caracas from the

novels Hotel DF (2010), Simone (2011) and the film Pelo Malo (2013) respectively. These

contemporary Latin American & Caribbean narratives provide insight into sentiments

This work explores the concepts of temporality, memory and history in the play La madrugada by Juan Tovar presented through the use of metatheatricality and intertextuality with works such as Pedro Páramo and various historical corridos. Working-class literature has never had a wide audience in Mexico, always overshadowed by other types of literature, such as the novel of the Mexican Revolution, the regionalist novel, and the indigenous novel. Nevertheless, there is no better place, as this chapter will suggest, to consider the status of literature and its relationship to history and ideology than from the genre of work and the worker.
