Dialectic As A Philosophical Method, Pierre Grimes Jan 1958

Dialectic As A Philosophical Method, Pierre Grimes

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Philosophy is the quest for wisdom and hence it may share a common end with religion. Not all philosophies are, however, concerned with this end, nor, again are all religions involved with a quest for wisdom. There may be different techniques and tools employed in the accomplishment of wisdom, but this dissertation is concerned only with the study of the nature and use of reason. In the philosophy of Plato reason is employed in diverse fields including mathematics, myths, and elaborate analogies, but when he turns to reason itself, then it becomes important to this analysis. Reason may be utilized …

Word-Making Potentialities Of English, Georgie A. Gurney Apr 1957

Word-Making Potentialities Of English, Georgie A. Gurney

Theses & Honors Papers

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the various methods of word-formation in the English language, to ascertain which methods are active in the post-World War II of today, and decide, if possible, which methods are coming into increasing use and which methods are temporarily out of favor.

For this study materials over a seventeen -year period 1939-1956 were consulted, and then the war words which seemed to find no permanent place in the language were discarded. Many of the war words were retained, however, if the seemed to fill a continuing need.

Of course, any judgement concerning what …

A Study Of The Speaking Of B. H. Roberts, Utah's Blacksmith Orator, R. Wayne Pace Jan 1957

A Study Of The Speaking Of B. H. Roberts, Utah's Blacksmith Orator, R. Wayne Pace

Theses and Dissertations

The Mormon Church has continued to grow in size and prominence since 1830 when Joseph Smith announced the formation of this new Christian organization.

The struggle to gain recognition for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) among the body of Christian groups has been a vigorous and energetic one. Out of the band of closely knit followers have developed leaders who were particularly gifted at proclaiming and defending the beliefs of this faith.

One of the men who was foremost in advancing the views of the Mormon people during the years 1880 to 1930 was Brigham Henry …

Fischbach, Julius, 1894-

The Preface states that “The stories presented in this collection were given to the children of the First Baptist Church, Lansing, Michigan, during the morning worship programs” (p. 7). They were intended to be “always in harmony with the theme of the morning sermon,” and to add “color and attractiveness” to the messages delivered to the adults (p. 8).

The sermons were delivered outside Appalachia, but Fischbach has significant ties to the region, so they can be included in the Library.

How Public Speeches Get Written, Mary Kay Pinckney Jan 1953

How Public Speeches Get Written, Mary Kay Pinckney

Student Scholarship

During the 1952 presidential campaign, both Adlai Stevenson and Dwight Eisenhower relied heavily on speeches to communicate their platforms, though they employed vastly different strategies and styles. While Governor Stevenson focused on the intellectual content of his addresses, General Eisenhower emphasized the emotional mood and a sense of earnestness.

Stevenson was known for his literary approach, often spending long hours personally writing and editing his speeches. He preferred prepared scripts and was particularly effective in indoor auditoriums or via television. Despite having a staff of researchers and high-profile writers like Robert Sherwood and Archibald MacLeish, Stevenson insisted on redrafting the …
