William Allen White, Diane Dufva Quantic Jan 1993

William Allen White, Diane Dufva Quantic

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

William Allen White was inevitable in Kansas: someone who epitomized the central nature of the region was bound to appear. White s career in journalism, politics, and literature reflects the radical changes in the American West between the Civil War and World War II. At the same time, his life reflects mainstream American values. Centrifugal forces that originated in his acquaintance with state and national people and events drew him East, but centripetal forces drew him back to Emporia: the newspaper business, his family, his genuine commitment to the town itself. Although his attempts to balance these varied interests produced …

Nature And Technology: Angelic And Sacrificial Strategies In Tolkien’S The Lord Of The Rings, Gwenyth Hood Jan 1993

Nature And Technology: Angelic And Sacrificial Strategies In Tolkien’S The Lord Of The Rings, Gwenyth Hood

English Faculty Research

Tolkien is often lightly accused of having a romantic view of nature, in that he portrays the natural environment as an embodiment of goodness, while technology is evil. Indeed, more than one critic has seen The Lord of the Rings as an attack on modem science and technology. This view is more commonly expressed word-of-the-mouth than in print, but it can be found even there, with Lee Donald Rossi, in his dissertation, classing Tolkien and Lewis as "reactionary fantasists" who would "get rid of most of the machines and return to a primarily agrarian economy" and Walter Scheps noting that …

Children Learning To Write: A Progression Through Predictable Stages, Shirley D. Vestal Jan 1993

Children Learning To Write: A Progression Through Predictable Stages, Shirley D. Vestal

Masters Theses

A first-grade teacher documents her students' progression through predictable stages as they learn to write: distinct units of scribbling and/or ground line and profile in drawing, letters, words, sentences, story structure (character, setting, problem, solving the problem, and ending the story/telling how the characters felt), and conventions (capital letters, punctuation, and conventional spelling).

Criteria based on readability at each stage by a knowledgeable and sensitive reader are an important aspect of this study.

The class writes every day using a five-day story format:

Day One: Character Pink paper

Day Two: Setting Blue paper

Day Three: Problem Yellow paper

Day Four: …

Gender, Reason, And Argument In Composition, Lee Ellen Knight Jul 1992

Gender, Reason, And Argument In Composition, Lee Ellen Knight

English Theses & Dissertations

Given that virtually all college and university students are required to complete courses in college composition, courses designed to prepare them to think and write in approved academic language, the field is a fertile one for feminist inquiry. Recent work on feminist epistemology and writing theory, combined with Richard Fulkerson's proposed four-part construct of any composition theory, can be used to examine the conventions of argumentative writing. Such writing typically uses adversarial metaphors, often privileges abstract conceptions of knowledge and, furthermore, may be based on metaphors for reason which denigrate emotion and exclude women. New techniques for writing about conflict, …

Assessing Patterns Of Disengagement And Re-Entry In Two Local Congregations Of Churches Of Christ, David Mitchell Malone

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates two congregations among Churches of Christ with a prototype instrument adapted from questions used in a national survey (The Unchurched American, The Princeton Religion Research Center, 1978). The ministry objective for this project thesis is to generate an assessment instrument to be used as a tool for ministry between active and inactive church members.

Specific questions addressed are: what are the patterns of disengagement and re-entry in two local congregations connected with Churches of Christ? Is the disengagement of teenagers and young adults (age 13-24) in each local congregation measurably greater than other recognized age categories over …

Teaching Rhetorical Delivery In Freshman Composition, Clayann Gilliam Panetta Apr 1992

Teaching Rhetorical Delivery In Freshman Composition, Clayann Gilliam Panetta

English Theses & Dissertations

In recent decades the discipline of English has undergone a complete reexamination from a number of angles. Important pedagogical issues have been raised because of the growth of composition programs, and English departments have even witnessed the birth of several subspecialities within composition studies. Two of these subspeciality areas, rhetorical theory and computer-assisted writing, have received special attention. In this paper, I suggest. that, these two can powerfully coexist and can help students gain insights about writing.

William Humphrey, Mark Royden Winchell Jan 1992

William Humphrey, Mark Royden Winchell

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

Unlike Europeans, Americans inhabit a vast land with a short history. For that reason, we have always tended to mythologize our experience in terms of space rather than time. In his essay “Boxing the Compass,” Leslie Fiedler even goes so far as to argue that American Literature can be broken down into regional subgenres—the Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western. Most readers, however, would recognize only two of these categories. Whether or not there is such a thing as an “Eastern” or a “Northern,” the South and the West clearly have been ahead—or perhaps behind—the rest of the country in cherishing …

Winston M. Estes, Bob J. Frye

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

Winston Estes is a regional writer. His published and unpublished fiction, with few exceptions, focuses on the Southwest—Texas in particular. In November 1973 his fourth book, A Simple Act of Kindness (1973), received the Southwest Fiction Award from the Border Regional Library Association in El Paso. Among his hundreds of unpublished letters is one of 21 September 1970 to P.G. Wodehouse. After thanking Wodehouse for his kind remarks about Estes's first novel, Another Part of the House (1970), Estes notes that he is about to finish his next book: “It, too, has a Texas setting. I’ve spent years trying to …

An Analysis Of Writing Across The Curriculum, M. Katherine Haight Jan 1992

An Analysis Of Writing Across The Curriculum, M. Katherine Haight

Masters Theses

Between 1900 and 1925 several changes took place which modernized American universities. One of the most significant involved a different curriculum. The new program was, in part, geared toward preparing students for specialized careers. This approach, however, made it possible for teachers outside of English to eliminate writing from their courses and, more generally, to develop distorted and limited views of the uses of writing. Today, Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) programs are being incorporated into many colleges and universities across the country in an attempt to correct misperceptions and to bring writing back into non-English courses.

WAC stresses the …
