Reading Willa Cather's The Song Of The Lark, Evelyn Funda Jan 1999

Reading Willa Cather's The Song Of The Lark, Evelyn Funda

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

When Willa Gather sent her publisher the manuscript for The Song of the Lark in March 1915, she wrote him that unless he had lived in the West, he couldn’t possibly understand how much of the region she had put into the novel. It expressed the “My country, ’tis of thee” feeling that the West always gave her, and, she concluded, when she grew old and couldn’t explore the desert anymore, all she need do to recapture the sense of place would be to lift the lid of the novel (Willa Gather to Ferris Greenslet, March 28, 1915—I paraphrase here …

Desert Literature: The Middle Period - J. Smeaton Chase, Edna Brush Perkins, And Edwin Corle, Peter Wild Jan 1999

Desert Literature: The Middle Period - J. Smeaton Chase, Edna Brush Perkins, And Edwin Corle, Peter Wild

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

Whether through religion, sex, or art, people crave excitement, to be elevated above ordinary experiences. A frequent theme both in our lives and in literature, this desire often involves the interplay of fantasy and reality. Is Hamlet indeed mad—does he actually see camels in the clouds—or is he quite coolly calculating, shrewdly manipulating people? For our part, when we fall in love, are we being led yet again by our delusions toward disaster?

Passions, Pedagogies, And 21st Century Technologies, Gail E. Hawisher, Cynthia L. Selfe Jan 1999

Passions, Pedagogies, And 21st Century Technologies, Gail E. Hawisher, Cynthia L. Selfe

All USU Press Publications

Once again, Gail Hawisher and Cynthia Selfe offer a volume that will set the agenda in the field of computers and composition scholarship for a decade. The technology changes that scholars of composition studies face as the next century opens couldn't be more dramatic or deserving of passionate study. While we have always used technologies (e.g., the pencil) to communicate with each other, the electronic technologies we now use have changed the world in ways that we have yet to identify or appreciate fully. Likewise, the study of language and literate exchange, even our understanding of terms like literacy, text, …

Inventing Academic Discourse: Teaching (And Learning) Marginal Poise And Fugitive Truth, Jane Hindman Jan 1999

Inventing Academic Discourse: Teaching (And Learning) Marginal Poise And Fugitive Truth, Jane Hindman

Publications and Research

This article further develops earlier versions of transformative pedagogy (e.g., Bartholomae and Petrosky's, Bizzell's, Lu's, Horner's), demonstrating how the self-reflexive tactics required in an analysis of professional practice make visible the ways that compositionists authorize academic discourse. David Bartholomae describes this as the teachers' unconscious need to "see ourselves in what [students] do." The pedagogical method proposed explains how features like "objectivity," "clarity," and [constraining] "voice" in academic discourse are misrecognized in our own rhetoric AND in our evaluations of our students. Because we demand these stylistic and institutionalized conventions of academic discourse from our students, we should-the paper argues-include …

Ivan Doig, A. Carl Bredahl Jan 1999

Ivan Doig, A. Carl Bredahl

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

The big sky of the American West has the striking effect of focusing the viewer’s attention on both land and sky. On America’s Great Plains and High Desert, the sky dominates, forcing the eye away from the traditional Judeo-Christian vertical orientation and toward the horizon, generating a remarkable sense of balance. American Western narrative carries this story of balance and possibility. The Westerner finds himself accepting the landscape, indeed drawing upon it for physical and spiritual sustenance. Even the most imposing of surfaces—the landscape of eastern Utah or of the Dakota badlands—share a vulnerability with man as evidenced by erosion, …

Retórica De La Predicación E Ideología Dominica En La Quinta Parte De El Conde Lucanor, Fernando Degiovanni Jan 1999

Retórica De La Predicación E Ideología Dominica En La Quinta Parte De El Conde Lucanor, Fernando Degiovanni

Publications and Research

Information Resources In Interdisciplinary Writing Program (Iwp) Courses: Winter And Spring 1998, Anne E. Zald, Nana Lowell Oct 1998

Information Resources In Interdisciplinary Writing Program (Iwp) Courses: Winter And Spring 1998, Anne E. Zald, Nana Lowell

Library Faculty Research

The University of Washington (UW) Interdisciplinary Writing Program (IWP) provides five-credit expository writing courses each of which is linked to a discipline-based lecture course. Students enroll in both the writing and discipline-based courses, and complementary assignments allow them to improve their writing skills within a subject area of their own particular interest. In Winter and Spring of 1998, the UW UWired program sponsored a pilot program adding librarian-taught class sessions to existing IWP courses. These sessions focused on the use of information resources in the context of student research for writing assignments. Post-course questionnaires were composed primarily of items drawn …

Writing Center Practices In Tennessee Community Colleges, James E. Crawford Aug 1998

Writing Center Practices In Tennessee Community Colleges, James E. Crawford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to develop a profile of writing centers in twelve community colleges governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents. This profile included how they were established, how they are funded and staffed, what services are provided and to whom, how training is provided for staff, and how technology is incorporated. More important than the profile itself, however, was an analysis of successful and unsuccessful practices, especially those related to governance, structure, and training of staff, as revealed through the perceptions and experiences of writing center directors. Because electronic technology has transformed the craft of writing, …

Meta-Ethnographic Development Of A Dialogue Methodology Applied To Organization Discourse, Shelley P. Gallup Jul 1998

Meta-Ethnographic Development Of A Dialogue Methodology Applied To Organization Discourse, Shelley P. Gallup

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A gap exists between theoretical stances that acknowledge the importance of dialogue as a dynamic within socially constructed structures, and "steersmanship" of those constructs--e.g., directing, intervening or transforming organizations. A "mechanism" which links theory with practice is missing, leaving practitioners with an acknowledgment of dialogue's central position, but without tools to enact this centrality in practice or research. This research constructs a conceptual model of dialogue, derived from the literature. Using this model as a base, the research seeks to generate a dialogue methodology bridging theory and practice with respect to organizational dialogue. The model, methodology, and research results are …

Collapsing The Philosophy/Rhetoric Disjunct: Nietzsche, Plato And The Perspectival Turn, Ned Vankevich Apr 1998

Collapsing The Philosophy/Rhetoric Disjunct: Nietzsche, Plato And The Perspectival Turn, Ned Vankevich

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Often overlooked within the standard views of academe lie hidden a number of tacit assumptions. Until the time of Nietzsche, the status of rhetoric as a discourse formation in Western intellectual history was often colored by the unflattering view generated by Plato in a number of his dialogues. In this thesis I present a case that revisits Plato and Nietzsche with an eye toward understanding the reasons why these two highly influential figures in contemporary philosophy adopt the views they advocate. In doing so, I attempt to illumine the reason Plato forms a fundamental split between philosophy and rhetoric and …

The Problematic Of Experience : Redefining Critical Work In Ethnography And Pedagogy., Min-Zhan Lu, Bruce Horner Mar 1998

The Problematic Of Experience : Redefining Critical Work In Ethnography And Pedagogy., Min-Zhan Lu, Bruce Horner

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Explores the convergence between projects in ethnographic research and composition pedagogy that emphasize the critical power of experience. Argues that critical ethnography and pedagogy need to redefine "experience" and its function for research and teaching and that composition can help this redefinition by looking for ways to build and constructively use a tension between teaching and research practices.

Under Construction: Working At The Intersections Of Composition Theory, Research, And Practice, Christine Farris, Chris M. Anson Jan 1998

Under Construction: Working At The Intersections Of Composition Theory, Research, And Practice, Christine Farris, Chris M. Anson

All USU Press Publications

Few composition scholars two decades ago would have imagined the rate at which their field is now developing, expanding beyond its boundaries, creating new alliances, and locating new sites for research and generation of knowledge. In their introduction to this volume, Farris and Anson argue that, faced with a welter of competing models, compositionists too quickly dichotomize and dismiss.

Composition Studies As A Creative Art: Teaching, Writing, Scholarship, Administration, Lynn Z. Bloom Jan 1998

Composition Studies As A Creative Art: Teaching, Writing, Scholarship, Administration, Lynn Z. Bloom

All USU Press Publications

This work focuses on the creative dynamics that arise from the interrelation of writing, teaching writing, and ways of reading—and the scholarship and administrative issues engendered by it. To regard composition studies as a creative art is to engage in a process of intellectual or aesthetic free play, and then to translate the results of this play into serious work that yet retains the freedom and playfulness of its origins. The book is fueled by a mixture of faith in the fields that compose composition studies, hope that efforts of composition teachers can make a difference, and a sense of …

Wiring The Writing Center, Eric H. Hobson Jan 1998

Wiring The Writing Center, Eric H. Hobson

All USU Press Publications

As computers have brought important developments to composition studies, writing centers have found themselves creating and improvising applications for their own work and often for the writing programs and institutions in which they live. Online tutorials, websites with an array of downloadable resources for students, scheduling and email possibilities--all of these are becoming common-place among writing centers across the country. However, in spite of impressive work by individual centers, exchange on these topics between and among writing centers has been sporadic. As more writing centers approach getting "wired" and others continue to upgrade, the need for communication and collaboration becomes …

The purpose of this project was to determine if it was possible to take Shakespeare's text and, preserving the language, present it in a way which would make it more accessible to a modern audience. It was also important to maintain the appropriate acting style and technique that distinguishes classical acting.

Rhetoric And The Aids Virus Hunt, Carol Reeves Jan 1998

Rhetoric And The Aids Virus Hunt, Carol Reeves

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

By comparing the papers produced by the laboratory teams of Robert Gallo and Jean Luc Montagnier during the AIDS virus hunt, we have an opportunity to discern the fine line between a bold, explicit rhetoric that may convince as well as offend and a bald, reserved rhetoric that may actually conceal important implications. Going too far in either direction may create misunderstandings and ethical dilemmas as will be demonstrated in a textual analysis deepened by an exploration of historical context and interviews with key participants. Since a public health crisis calls upon communication that thwarts misunderstandings, scientists should understand the …

Alberto Ríos, Peter Wild Jan 1998

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

Caught up in the current cultural ferment involving race, sex, and ethnic identity, people tend to forget. The all-time best-selling novel in the nineteenth-century United States was an antislavery book written by a woman, and in the 1920s black writer W. E. B. Du Bois was widely celebrated by a large number of critics. Periodically over the course of the nation’s history, both as concerns the general culture and our literature specifically, what we today call minorities, and how we perceive them, have exerted huge influences, shaping much of our lives, from what we wear and eat to what we …

Galdós's Segunda Manera: Rhetorical Strategies And Affective Response, Linda M. Willem Jan 1998

Galdós's Segunda Manera: Rhetorical Strategies And Affective Response, Linda M. Willem

Butler University Books

This book explores the change that occurred in the writings of Spanish novelist Benito Pérez Galdós when he entered his segunda manera in 1881 with the publication of La desberedada, his first contemporary novel. By studying his novels in light of how their stories are told, Linda Willem shows that La desberedada marks the beginning of a more sophisticated and varied mode of narrative presentation in Galdós's work. Through close readings of his first seven contemporary novels, Willem shows how the affective response associated with various narrative devices plays a role in the rhetorical strategies of each text.
