In my dissertation, Contagious Animality: Species, Disease, and Metaphor in Early Modern Literature and Culture, I close read examples of Renaissance drama alongside their contemporary cultural texts to examine anxieties around social differences as constructed and mediated through what I call “contagious animality” in early modern English culture. Animal metaphors circulated anxieties around social differences on the early modern cultural stage in English drama where animality elicits uncertainties about identitarian constructions of difference. In this vein, I close read formal elements and their interactions with early modern culture to argue that animal metaphors transmit modes of speciating difference in …

The Poetics Of 'Gentilezza' In The 'Fiore' And The Emergence Of Dante's Political Vision Before The Exile, Robert J. Clines

This essay investigates the political and literary culture of late Duecento Florence as well as the entangled rather than mutually exclusive nature of Dante’s pre- and post-exile political and literary visions. I read Dante’s political vision against the Fiore, a Tuscan form of the medieval French epic Roman de la Rose that appeared in Italy before 1290. Pervasive in Dante’s politics, poetics, and the cultural milieux in which the Fiore appeared are the rejection of French/Provençal cultural dominance, Franco-Angevin political influence in Italy, and mendicants as morally bankrupt threats to civil society. In turn, this essay argues that the …

A portable monastic libellus, or partial ritual book, describing the administration of rites to an ill monk, the burial rites of a monk or layperson, and the prayers, chants, and processions associated with them; the libellus demonstrates the role of the monks in ensuring proper burial for members of the lay community. The punctus flexus punctuation and the inclusion of St. Hugh of Lincoln, the second-most prominent saint (behind Bruno) in the Carthusian Order, suggest that the manuscript belonged to a Carthusian monastery. Breviary for use in the diocese of Cologne, probably in the Kölner Dom (cathedral). Made in the 15th century, it was used, annotated, and repaired through to the end of the 18th century. The breviary is preceded by a calendar in which the feasts of Saint Gereon and the Eleven Thousand Virgins, martyrs of Cologne, and of Saint Severin, an early bishop of Cologne, are written in red. The Sanctoral in the breviary itself includes offices for a number of saints associated with Cologne and for the Translation of the Three Kings, associated with relics kept on the high altar …

Lecture notes on Aristotle's Parva naturalia, in many cases indicating the date of the lecture. Each section begins with a summary of its argument, followed by running commentary on the Greek text. Greek headings indicate the text currently under consideration. Book of documents (Copialbuch; Urkundenbuch) of the town of Châtenois (German, Kestenholz), in the département of Bas-Rhin, region of Alsace, France. At the time that the book was begun, in 1478 (f. 1r), the town was in the possession of the archbishop of Strasbourg. The documents include oaths and regulations (Ordnungen) governing citizenship and various offices or professions; several agreements, notices, or petitions; and the recording of supervisors of the fields (Bannwarten, Rebbannwarten) and the prices of wine (Weinschlag), entered annually until 1762 (f. 151v) and 1788 (f. 142v), respectively. Includes calendar, Office of the Virgin (use of Sarum), Seven Penitential Psalms and incipits of the Gradual Psalms, litany, notated Office of the Dead (use of Sarum), and a variety of prayers. The musical notation in the Office of the Dead is unusual, as is the absence of the prayers Obsecro te and O intemerata. Evidence of use includes erasure of Thomas à Becket from calendar, erasures in text, and 17th-century additions in English to calendar.
