Nephi's Vision And The Revelation Of John
Nephi's Vision And The Revelation Of John
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
''The revelations of Nephi and of John have more in common . .. than merely the apocalyptic form, for Nephi's vision anticipates that of John. The two are complementary, centering in part on the same characters and themes: the Lamb and his Church, the Apostasy, the great and abominable church of the devil, and the restoration of the gospel in the latter days," asserts Stephen E. Robinson in "Early Christianity and 1 Nephi 13-14" and 'Warring Against the Saints of God."
Who Wrote The Title Page?
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Daniel Ludlow has taken a careful look at the title page of the Book of Mormon in his Paper ''The Title Page." Examining title pages in all major editions of the Book of Mormon, he compares printing history, wording, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. He also has studied how the original paragraphing and punctuation were added by a typesetter.

Since Cumorah
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
"Since its first printing in 1967, Since Cumorah has been a classic in Book of Mormon scholarship, and its significance has not decreased with the years," says John W. Welch. "We are pleased to offer this expanded volume to a new generation of Book of Mormon students. This long popular book examines the Book of Mormon in light of the discoveries at Qumran, Nag-Hammadi, and throughout the ancient world. It's Nibley at his best, challenging many traditional scholarly assumptions and opening avenues of inquiry regarding the Book of Mormon and its present-day implications."

Farms In The News
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
F.A.R.M.S. has two orientations: One is to do the academic scriptural research; another is to distribute those results as widely and inexpensively as possible. The recent addition of Sue Bergin to the F.A.R.M.S. staff as Coordinator of Public Relations has enhanced that second effort immensely. Like most people working with the Foundation, Sue puts in long hours as a volunteer because of her love for the scriptures.

It is apparent that the Book of Mormon means more to us that just paper and ink. This sacred volume has figured remarkably, and miraculously, in the profound spiritual experiences of thousands of people. "This aspect of the Book of Mormons' presence needs to be recorded," says Don Norton, Professor of English at BYU, who specializes in helping people write their personal histories.

A Day And A Half's Journey For A Nephite
A Day And A Half's Journey For A Nephite
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The narrow neck of land is an important geographical feature in the Book of Mormon. For many years people have debated whether the narrow neck was the Isthmus of Panama, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Southern Mexico, or somewhere else. Some have argued that the neck must have been very narrow, because Alma 22:32 says that the distance across the "narrow neck" of the promised land from the east to the west sea was "a day and a half's journey for a Nephite." But how wide could this distance have been? Recently analyzed information suggests that it could have been …

The February 1976 issue of Insights gave a short report on the question of how long it took Joseph Smith to translate the Book of Mormon as we have it today. That work began in earnest on April 7, 1829, and was completed by the end of June. A lengthy report may now be ordered chronicling, day by day, a documented history of this intense period of activity. "It is quite staggering," remarks Jack Welch, " when you realize all that was going on in those few days.

The Sacrament Prayers Studies
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Latter-day Saints most commonly turn to D&C 20: 76-79 to find the texts of the sacrament prayers they regularly use on Sundays. In fact, however, the words for these prayers came from the Nephites. In a new report listed on the attached order form, the textual history of the sacrament prayers is studied, from Benjamin 's words in Mosiah 5, to Jesus' words in 3 Nephi 18, to the final texts in Moroni 4-5. " I find it impressive," comments John Sorenson.
