Toward The Folkloristic Study Of Latter-Day Saint Conversion Narratives, Eric A. Eliason
BYU Studies
Frequently told among Latter-day Saints, conversion stories—both one's own or those of one's ancestors—constitute an important and overlooked genre at the core of Mormon narrative folklore.
Ex Corde Ecclesiae And The Civil Law, Gerard V. Bradley
Ex Corde Ecclesiae And The Civil Law, Gerard V. Bradley
Journal Articles
Most parties to the debate over Ex Corde Ecclesiae agree that Canon 812 is at the heart of the matter. Canon 812 says: "It is necessary that those who teach theological disciplines in any institute of higher studies have a mandate from the competent ecclesiastical authority." Essentially, the canon requires the consent of some Church authority (likely the local ordinary) to the appointment of theology professors.
Why is the matter so central? Because the stakes are very great. Behind the disagreement over Canon 812 lies a disagreement over what Catholic theology is, a disagreement that is substantially a product of …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of the present study is to compare Catholic and non-Catholic students in a Catholic High School (Wheeling Central Catholic High School) with respect to their religious knowledge and religious practices. One hundred and fifty-nine (159) Catholic students (92 ninth graders, 67 twelfth graders) and eighteen (18) non-Catholic students (14 ninth graders, 4 twelfth graders) are included in the study. Raw scores for religious knowledge and religious practice were derived from data obtained from administration of the Assessment of Catholic Religious Education (ACRE), 1992 edition. Chiasmus In Antiquity: Structures, Analyses, Exegesis, John W. Welch
Chiasmus In Antiquity: Structures, Analyses, Exegesis, John W. Welch
Maxwell Institute Publications
The study of ancient literature has been enriched in the second half of the 20th century by the growing awareness and understanding of chiasmus in ancient literature. This form of inverted parallelism has been found in the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and in many other ancient writings.
The essays in Chiasmus in Antiquity, first published in Germany in 1981, examine the use and effect of chiasmus in the Old and New Testaments and the Book of Mormon, as well as in Sumero-Akkadian, Ugaritic, Talmudic, Greek, and Latin literatures. These essays have been reprinted in this first American edition …

King Benjamin's Speech: "That Ye May Learn Wisdom", John W. Welch, Stephen D. Ricks
Maxwell Institute Publications
For readers of the Book of Mormon, King Benjamin’s speech is a treasure trove of inspiration, wisdom, eloquence, and spiritual insight. King Benjamin’s Speech: “That Ye May Learn Wisdom” is the most substantial collection of studies ever to focus exclusively on this landmark address.
The contributors examine this speech in the multifaceted contexts in which it was delivered: as a classic speech of a departing leader near the time of his death, as the focus of an annual festival season mandated anciently under the law of Moses, as part of a covenant renewal ceremony delivered within the sacred precinct of …

Latter-Day Christianity: 10 Basic Issues, Robert L. Millet, Noel B. Reynolds
Maxwell Institute Publications
With the rapid and visible growth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it was inevitable that doctrinal differences would arise between the Latter-day Saints and people of other faiths. Members of the LDS Church profess to be Christians, yet others doubt or do not understand this claim.
The contributors to Latter-day Christianity hope that the 10 essays contained in this full-color, illustrated book will help Latter-day Saints who want to explain their beliefs and will be useful to people outside the LDS Church who want a simple and clear statement of those beliefs. The essays address such …

Isaiah In The Book Of Mormon, Donald W. Parry, John W. Welch
Maxwell Institute Publications
The essays in this book, written by some of the finest LDS scholars, take a variety of approaches to help readers make the most of the Isaiah passages in the Book of Mormon. These scholars use the prophets of the Book of Mormon as knowledgeable guides, examining how and why those ancient writers used and interpreted Isaiah in order to clarify for modern readers what the Isaiah sections in the Book of Mormon are all about.

Mark 8:22-26 records Jesus' healing of a blind man at Bethsaida. When the villagers brought the man to Jesus, Jesus took him outside the town, spit on the man's eyes, laid his hands on him, and asked him if he could see anything. The man answered, "I see men as trees, walking." Jesus then put his hands on the man's eyes again and made him look up, and with that the man could see clearly and normally. Jesus sent the man home, instructing him not to tell anyone back in the town. This account contains several remarkable details and raises …

The Holy Land: A Premodern Photo Tour, Byu Studies
BYU Studies
The following photographic essay presents a series of rare vistas from Jerusalem and Palestine photographed about a century ago. More changes have occurred in the Holy Land in the last one hundred years than in the previous two thousand. Pictures such as these take the viewer back into the premodern era of the land of Israel. Their unpaved streets and simple landscapes are the same that greeted President George A. Smith and his party on their visit to the Holy Land in 1873 (see Journal of Discourses, 16:93-102) or that surrounded Orson Hyde as he prayed on the Mount …
