In The Beginning: A New View Of Black American Etiological Tales, Daryl Cumber Dance
English Faculty Publications
A substantial number of Black folktales may be designated as etiological "myths" in that they tend to focus on the world as it evolved and to frequently portray the role of God in explaining why the Negro is, to quote from one tale, "so messed up," why he is black, why he has big, ugly feet and hands, why his hair is kinky, and why he must remain a poor laborer in a rich society. Bryan V. Itasca County, Us Supreme Court, William J. Brennan
US Government Documents Related to Indigenous Nations
This United States (US) Supreme Court case, decided June 14, 1976, provided clarity on the jurisdiction granted by US Public Law 280 in regard to taxation of the personal property of reservation Indians. In 1972, petitioner Russell Bryan, enrolled member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe residing on the Leech Lake Reservation in Minnesota, received a notice of taxation on his home from Itasca County, Minnesota. Bryan filed suit to Minnesota district court which ruled in favor of Itasca County. Although US Public Law 280 does not specifically address taxation, the district court based its decision on US Public Law 280, …

Race As A Moderator Variable In The Prediction Of Grade Point Average From Act Scores: Implications For Course Placement Guidelines, Robert Ungarean
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The problems focused on in this study are to determine (1) if racial differences exist when American College Testing Program (ACT) scores are used to predict Grade Point Average (GPA); (2) how placement decisions may be affected if differences do exist; (3) and what guidelines or recommendations can be formulated to avoid possible test bias and discrimination in placement procedures. Subjects consisted of the total population of 139 Black freshman students and a sample of 139 White freshman students entering a Southeastern regional university in the fall of 1970. Separate regression analyses were performed for Black, White and combined (total) …
