Letter From Robert T. Coulter To Thomas Banyacya, July 14, 1977, Robert T. Coulter Jul 1977

Letter From Robert T. Coulter To Thomas Banyacya, July 14, 1977, Robert T. Coulter

American Indian Movement and Activism

This two-page typed letter to Thomas Banyacya from attorney Robert T. Coulter is dated July 14, 1977. It discusses the effects of accepting payment from the United States for the claim made in the Indian Claims Commission for a parcel of Hopi land. The claim that was made was for money equal to the value of the Hopi land, and is not compensation for past wrongs. Coulter explains that if the monetary award is accepted, the Hopi would lose their claim to land.

Aboriginal Exploitation Of Marine Food Resources, Alan J. Osborn Jul 1977

Aboriginal Exploitation Of Marine Food Resources, Alan J. Osborn

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

Anthropological interest in human exploitation of resources has increased considerably during the last decade. Archaeological and ethnological literature concerning man's utilization of the world's oceans is relatively abundant and there are now several on-going anthropological research programs, e.g., Aleutian Islands, Pacific Northwest Coast, California, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Ecuador, Chile, and Southern Africa which focus primarily on maritime adaptations. The purpose of this study is threefold: (1) to suggest that anthropological assumptions regarding marine food resources and their use are inadequate; (2) to examine marine ecosystems with respect to structure and dynamics, primary productivity, ecological efficiencies, distributional and quantitative …

Tuning In The Boiler Room And The Cotton Patch: New Directions In The Study Of Afro-American Folklore, Daryl Cumber Dance Jun 1977

Tuning In The Boiler Room And The Cotton Patch: New Directions In The Study Of Afro-American Folklore, Daryl Cumber Dance

English Faculty Publications

One of the first problems in the study of folklore is, of course, the collection of materials. In almost every area of Black folklore, the collecting was initiated by whites. As I have noted elsewhere, "Black folk forms seem to thrive quietly and abashedly in the Black community as items of private enjoyment and public shame until they are ' discovered ' by whites who legitimize them for the American public-Black and white. Such has been the case with the general folk tales (the animal tales, the etiological myths, the Slave John tales, etc.), the spirituals, and the blues. The …

Wit And Humor In The Slave Narratives, Daryl Cumber Dance Apr 1977

Wit And Humor In The Slave Narratives, Daryl Cumber Dance

English Faculty Publications

This passage suggests something of the nature of Black humor and the function it has served, not only in the slave narratives, but in the folk tales and throughout the history of recorded literature from William Wells Brown to Amiri Baraka. The life revealed in all of these sources is shown to often be alternately degrading and courageous, tragic and absurdly comic, hopeless and yet enduring; indeed that life could hardly ever be termed merely amusing. And the Black character, though he may be seen to laugh, can hardly be deemed carefree, unbothered, satisfied, even truly happy. Indeed the paradox …

An Introduction To The Akawaio And Arekuna Peoples, Walter F. Edwards, Amerindian Languages Project, University Of Guyana Apr 1977

An Introduction To The Akawaio And Arekuna Peoples, Walter F. Edwards, Amerindian Languages Project, University Of Guyana

English Faculty Research Publications

The present monograph focusses on the Akawaio and Arekuna tribes who inhabit the Upper Mazaruni area of Guyana. We have tried in this effort to provide the kind of basic cultural and linguistic information about Akawaios and Arekunas that non-Amerindian people including teachers, administrators and employers should find valuable and we have tried to present these ideas in as non-technical a style as possible. Section II of this work is devoted to lists of words which we think would help Coastlanders and other non-Amerindians to begin to interact socially with Akawaios and Arekunas. In the early chapters we have presented …

Law Enforcement In The United States And Its Relationship To The American Indian, Native American Solidarity Committee

American Indian Movement and Activism

This 25-page typed document was prepared for the American Indian Movement by the Native American Solidarity Committee, circa 1977. The report begins by citing statistics of poor health and living conditions as well as unemployment on Indian reservations and the exploitation of native peoples and resources by large energy companies. It details the annihilation of Indian culture in public schools and provides examples of vigilante violence against Indians. The report then provides a history of acts of resistance by the American Indian Movement culminating in the events of Wounded Knee. It lists many further activist encounters with law enforcement and …
