This research effort is based on the life and development process which the author has experienced and is currently experiencing. This effort for all intents and purposes, is an individual self-study. "Critical Incidents" have been utilized to develop a sense of understanding for the reader. "Aunt Sue's Stories": The Use Of Folklore In The Teaching Of Literature, Daryl Cumber Dance Jan 1980

"Aunt Sue's Stories": The Use Of Folklore In The Teaching Of Literature, Daryl Cumber Dance

English Faculty Publications

This poem by Langston Hughes, one of America's most prolific poets, suggests the appeal of folklore to the young. Aunt Sue's stories inspire the response that every teacher of literature aspires to elicit from his students. I would like to suggest that the most natural thing in the world for the teacher is to capitalize on this appeal of folklore to help develop an interest in and an appreciation for recorded literature. Folklore can do much to help the student bridge the gap between his own world and what seems to many to be the alien world of Shakespeare. Our …

The State Of Black Omaha 1980, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Publications

In early 1978, the Urban League of Nebraska published a report designed to measure the status of Blacks in housing, employment, education, health care and political participation. At that time, Blacks in Omaha were found to be deficient in all the above areas in relation to the general community. Today, in early 1980, the basic facts of that report have not significantly changed. Blacks are still almost exclusively concentrated east of 48th Street with most of them having a median income just under 1 half that of the Omaha average of $16,000. Official figures indicate that while Black unemployment has …

Race And Sentencing Equality In Kentucky, Robert L. Hurley Dec 1979

Race And Sentencing Equality In Kentucky, Robert L. Hurley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Disparity in sentencing felons based on racial considerations has long has been considered a problem for civil libertarians and scholars alike. Examining data gathered in Kentucky, this thesis addresses this issue through the application of recently developed methodological techniques. Utilizing an index of sentencing equality, this study shows that while differences do exist in black and white offender offense characteristics, these differences do not account for the variations in sentences rendered in cases of white as opposed to black felons. This exploratory research reviews and critiques previous research and provides evidence which should prove useful in resolving the problem of …
