Interview With Robert Wrigley, Matthew Del Busto

Robert Wrigley is the author of numerous collections of poetry, most recently Anatomy of Melancholy & Other Poems (2013), which won him the Pacific Northwest Book Award. During his visit to Butler, Wrigley sat down to talk with Manuscripts staff member Matt Del Busto about his most recent collection, titled after Robert Burton’s The Anatomy of Melancholy, written almost 400 years prior. They discussed the power of poetry and melancholy in our lives. In 2016, Wrigley retired from a forty-year teaching career and currently lives in Idaho “in the woods on the side of a mountain” with his wife.

This project analyzes the photography project “#RefugeeCameras”, where German photojournalist Kevin McElvaney gave disposable cameras to refugees to document their own experiences. The project includes close examination of the photography collection and considers the photographic depiction of landless people by other landless people in juxtaposition to the concept of the refugee as a ‘terrorist’. This thesis analyzes the findings of an interview-based research study of public-serving libraries in the state of Connecticut. Specifically, it examines these institutions’ use of social media to promote civic discourse online and on-site with the purpose of producing guidelines for best practices. This new research emerges from the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts research Experience (SHARE) Award project, “Museums, Libraries, and Civic Discourse in Connecticut,” which concluded Spring 2016.

Abstract

This monograph discusses a body of work that I completed during 2016 and 2017. The medium used for this project was photography. This work started on a very small scale taking a few photographs in Harrisonburg Virginia, but this initial investigation led me to complete over 25,000 photographs and travel to over thirteen different states including Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, and Tennessee over an eleven month period of time.

Sublime Memories: Bones As A Medium For Cyanotype Printing And Indigo Dying; The Strength Derived From Connection To The Environment; And The Power Of The Color Blue, Alexis R. Bernstein

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

This project attempts to portray how connections to the environment provide strength and opportunities for growth. By printing cyanotype images of landscapes and plant life on bones, my work links the ecological world with a representation of mortality. The symbolism of bones provide concepts of strength and life, while the symbolism of blue evokes emotions of distance and longing that create a dreamy memory-inspired image quality throughout the series. The historic processes of cyanotype printing and indigo dying were successfully modified for the medium of bones, allowing both artistic techniques to work together in harmony.
